Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop authentic E-learning listening materials of narrative text based on local folklore for the tenth-grade students in SMA Plus Sedayu Nusantara. This study was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, materials development, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of the study was the tenth-grade students in SMA Plus Sedayu Nusantara. The data were gathered by reviewing documents, conducting an interview with the English teacher, and distributing the students' needs analysis questionnaires to X MIA 4 consists of 27 students to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students needed authentic E-learning listening materials based on local folklore. The developed reading materials were validated by two experts which scored 3.52 and 4.79 on average. The scores approved that the authentic E-learning listening materials based on local folklore were valid and very valid to use for the tenth-grade students in SMA Plus Sedayu Nusantara. The result of the product was distributed to the students through Blog.Key words: Development, E-learning, Listening Materials, Authentic Materials, Local Folklore, Blog.

Abstract

This study deals with the effect of using media Series of Pictures on students’ achievement in writing narrative text. The method of the research was quasi experimental design. Population of the study was grade XI of SMA BUDI MURNI. Two classes were chosen as purposive sampling. The classes were divided into two group was taught by using series of pictures and the control group without using the picture. The data were acquired by administered the pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 17.00. The mean score of the control group in pretest = 40.46, experimental group = 40.40. In post-test, mean score of the control group =46.94 while the experimental group =53.71.

Abstract

This research deals with the readability level of reading texts and the eighth gradestudents of junior high school. The objective of this research is to find out thereadability level of reading texts in English for junior high school textbook. Theresearcher used qualitative method in which the researcher describes thereadability level of reading texts in the textbook by using Gunning Fog IndexFormula. The text that will be analyze are 16 reading texts which are consists ofthree genres, 4 descriptive texts, 4 recount texts, and 8 narrative texts. They arethe whole reading texts in the English for junior high school textbook, publishedby Mediatama. Based on the analysis by using Gunning Fog Index Formula, fromtotal number 16 reading texts, 12 reading texts are in the very easy level, 1 text isin the standard level, and 3 texts are in the difficult level. In average, the texts arein the very easy level with score 7.3. It’s found based on the Gunning’s theory. Itis concluded that reading texts in English for junior high school textbook are notin the appropriate level for the eighth grade students of junior high school in SMPNegeri 3 Stabat.

Abstract

This study is aimed to develop English reading materials for vocational school.This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). Thesubject of this research was Grade X students of Light Vehicle EngineeringDepartment of SMK YPT Pangkalan Brandan consisting of 22 students. The dataconsist of syllabus, lesson plan, syllabus and existing materials. Instrument ofcollecting data were questionnaires and interview which were used to collectinformation about students’ needs and learning needs. The need analysis showedthat 81.8 % of students had difficult to understanding English reading text becausethe text is not relevant, difficult to understand the structure of word and sentencesin reading text and difficult to conclude the reading text. The evaluation ofexisting reading materials showed that the existing reading materials are notintended for students of Light Vehicle Engineering Department. The existingreading materials are intended for all vocational students. After the students’ needand reading materials had been analyzed, the new reading material was developedthat considering the students’ need and the relevant with vehicle. The genre of thereading texts which were developed is descriptive text. Based on basiccompetence, kinds of descriptive text which developed are describing people,tourism place, and historical building. The product of this study consists of fivechapters which titles are Soichiro Honda, Museum Angkut, Coventry TransportMuseum, TMII Transport Museum, and Cadillac Ranch. The product wasvalidated by an English teacher and an English lecturer with the mean score is 4.1from 5. The product is categorized as “Good and Relevant” reading materials.

Abstract

This study investigates interpersonal metaphor in “Indonesia Now” English news TV program based on Systemic Functional Linguistics approach. The objective of the study are to identify what types of interpersonal metaphors in “Indonesia Now”, to describe how those interpersonal metaphors are used, and to explain in what context those interpersonal metaphor are used. A qualitative descriptive research design was applied. The data were taken from one weekly broadcast Indonesia Now in January to June 2017. The data were collected by recording the “Indonesia Now” program on Metro TV, then transcribing the program broadcasts into written text, classifying the data into types of interpersonal metaphors and then drawing conclusion from the data. The findings of the study show that there are five types of interpersonal metaphor used in “Indonesia Now”, namely metaphor of mood, modality, epithet, euphemism, and connotation. The use of interpersonal metaphor in “Indonesia Now” is realized by use of incongruent types of expressing meaning in interaction. In addition, the use of interpersonal metaphor, it is also found that expressing emotion as the new findings of this study which not in line with the previous theories. The speaker use interpersonal metaphor to accurately reflect their point of view and express the emotion and this purpose can be achieved with the reference to social context which named context of situation.Keyword: Interpersonal metaphor, Systemic Functional Linguistic, Indonesia Now

Abstract

This research was carried out to investigate the modality used in beauty product advertisements on Instagram caption. The objective of the research was to describe the types of modality used in beauty product advertisements on Instagram caption. The data of this research was the clauses consisting of modality used in beauty product advertisements which are taken from official account of three local brands on Instagram. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. The instrument of this research was observation. The types of modality were analyzed by using the theory of Carrettero (2007). In this research was found four types of modality. Abstract

This study focus on investigating utterances used by male and female teachers in teaching learning process based on inquiry model. It is a qualitative research design. The subjects were six teachers in SMP AL-Wasliyah 29 Medan. There are three male teachers and three female teachers. The data of this research is collected by recording, transcribing and analysing. Recording was applied to record utterances of male and female teachers in teaching learning process based inquiry model. Transcribing was applied to transcribe the utterances of male and female in teaching learning process based on inquiry model. And analysing was to analyse the utterances of male and female in teaching learning process based on inquiry model. The study proposed by Tanen’s theory. The problem of the study are how the categories of male and female teachers’ utterances realized and why realized in the ways they are. The data were analysed by using Miles and Huberman. The result of this study revealed that: Male and female teachers were different in delivering their utterances. It could be seen from the categories showed on their utterances. Male teachers showed the categories of male utterances, such as support, intimacy, understanding, feeling, and proposal in their utterances to their students. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research deals with factors slow secondary learners difficulties in learning speaking at Homeschooling Global Lentera Kasih Batam. This research was conducted by using qualitative research. The objectives of this study was to investigate the factors causing slow secondary learners difficulties in learning speaking English. The data of this study obtained from documentation and interview. The techniques of collecting data that was applied in this research- they are observation, interview and documentation. The data of this study obtained from the result of interview from teacher and parents of slow learners. The source of data in this study was slow secondary learners grade X and the English teacher. There were 2 English teachers, and 2 classes of secondary level learners in Homeschooling Global Lentera Kasih and both slow learners classes contains 4 students, in class X-1 they are FL, NM, RRH and PLG, while in class X-2, they are DA, KT, SRN and FDF. The results showed that there were two factors caused the difficulties of slow learners in learning speaking, they are emotional and personal factors. Keywords: Factors, Slow Learners, Difficuties , Learning, Homeschooling

Abstract

Since the present of Corona virus, all aspects of human live are changed. This also happened in education field. Because of this pandemic, students and teachers have to do online learning. Online learning by utilizing technology demands innovation and creativity in learning activities. One way that can be used to do the learning process online is using Google Classroom digital media. The aim of this study is to evaluate Students’ perceptions on the effectiveness of Google Classroom as a Digital tool in Teaching and Learning. The study was conducted through a descriptive qualitative with Survey Research Design to investigate the Students’ Perceptions. Data analysis was conducted using Descriptive Statistics. The results of the study indicated that Google Classroom is effective in improving Students access and attentiveness towards learning, knowledge and skills gained through Google Classroom. Make Students to be active learners, as a Digital Tool, it provides meaningful feedback to both Students and Teachers.

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive research deals with The Use of Pronoun in Strategy of Politeness In Talk Show Program. This research observe the Use of Pronoun in Strategy of Politeness In Indonesia Lawyer Club ( ILC) Talk Show Program in some episode. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of politeness strategies are used in personal subject pronoun by the interviewees in  Indonesia Lawyer Club ( ILC) Talk Show Program, and to investigate politeness strategies used the personal subject pronoun. The data were taken from the episode of Indonesia Lawyer Club Talk Show Program  in 2018 years. The data were collected by downloading the video of Indonesia Lawyer Club Talk Show Program from youtube and then were transcribed. The data were analyzed by qualitative research based on interactive model which is created by Miles and Huberman. The result of the research shown the positive and negative politeness are used in Indonesia Lawyer Club ( ILC) by the same person. The same speaker and the same hearer used the politeness dynamically. It depends on topics/ issue whereas they understand or not  in other hand they expert in the material. the researcher found that all types of Politeness Strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) found in the data. The data of Positive Politeness were consisted of 28 lines (42.42%) which was the highest data from other strategies, while Off Record of Politeness Strategies was obtained as much 18 lines (30.30%), then followed by Negative Politeness of Politeness Strategies was obtained as much 17 lines (22.73%), and the last was Bald on Record with 3 lines (4.55%). Keywords: Politeness strategies, Pronouns, Talkshow Program
