Abstract

This research aim to design English speaking materials needed for students of electrical engineering study program at SMK Sinar Husni Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product.The subject of this study were students of class X-l2 of electrical engineering study program consisting of 38 students. The instrumentations for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 38 respondents to get the students’needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for electrical engineering study program. Thus, The materials were then developed through Contextual Teaching and Learning approach which implementation by REACT (relating, experiencing, applying, cooperating, and transferring) and developed with their study program and work life situation. The learning materials were developed into 6 units of speaking material. by two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4,5 or 90% from English Lecturer and 4,4 or 87,6% from English teacher.It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for grade X students of electrical engineering study program. Key words: Research and Development (R & D), Speaking materials,Contextual Teaching and Learning, Electrical Engineering Program

Abstract

The study was aimed to develop media based on PowToon in teaching writing recount text for grade VIII students in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of the study was Grade VIII of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Medan. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the students’ needs English learning media which can motivate the students to understand about the recount writing. The product has been validated by experts. The result of the product was videos that contain audio-visual media to be used in mastering the recount text writing. The result of experts’ validation showed that the media was an appropriate media to be used in teaching writing recount text by getting the average percentage of 95% categorized as excellent.Keywords: PowToon, Recount Text, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of applying Demonstration Method on students’ achievement in speaking skill. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade XII, Vocational High School (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan: SMK), which consisted of 79 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was speaking test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Kuder Richardson 21 formula. The result of the reliability was 0.7, and it was found that the test was reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant m = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 77, t-observed value 8.9 > t-table value 1.99. The findings indicate that using Demonstration Method significantly affected the students’ achievement in speaking skill. So, English teachers are suggested to use Demonstration Method in order to improve students’ achievement in speaking skill.

Abstract

This research is aimed to develop reading materials as a material in teaching reading, easy to be learnt and can be used for teaching reading descriptive text. This study is developmental research uses Borg and Gall’s model. The validator of the reading materials are two experts. This instruments employed in this study are questionnaires, interview, observation, document. The finding of this study is the percentage showed that the developed reading materials were 83.2 % valid. The study takes place in SMK Swasta Karya Bakti Padang Cermin to the students of eleventh grade, academic year 2016/2017. The samples are 21 students which is given new reading materials for the research. The scoring system was based on 5 aspect they are; linguistic, process, product, content layout and suggestions. The result shows that there is an increase of students’ ability in reading descriptive text by developing reading materials as the materials in teaching reading. Therefore, the researcher suggest to English teacher to develop reading materials as one of the alternative ways to increase the students’ descriptive text in reading ability.

Abstract

THE USE OF BLENDED LEARNING IN TEACHING WRITING RECOUNT TEXT TO THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 20 MEDAN *Nurul Aulia **Anni Holila Pulungan **Yeni Erlita ABSTRACT This research dealt with blended learning used by the teachers in teaching writing recount text. The objectives of this study were (1) to explain the use of blended learning for teaching writing recount text to the tenth grade students; (2) to analyze the problems faced by teachers of using blended learning in teaching learning process of writing recount text. This study was qualitatively conducted that involved two English teachers of SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The data were collected by using recording, interview and observing the whole processes of teaching writing. The findings of this study showed that both teachers used the three processes in blended learning setting, such as: conventional learning, emphasizes learning actively and interactive learning. It was also found that the use of blended learning was used in the scientific approach activity. There were four problems faced by teachers in using blended learning, such as the problem of the traditional mindset, the problem of managing and assessing learner progress, bandwidth, and confusion in using the application. Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of Think Pair Share technique on Grade VIII students’ reading comprehension. It was an experimental research. The population of this study were the students of SMP Negeri 5 Medan, which consisted of 60 students. The research is divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was reading comprehension test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied SPSS 17. From the result, it can be concluded that the experimental group’ score in posttest (M=54.33, SE=1.511). The paired sample correlation shows that the correlation is 0. 662. It means that it had strong correlation between pre-test and posttest in the experimental group. The calculation on effect size should be performed to find out how successful the treatment and how significant the improvement was and the findings indicated that using Think Pair Share significantly affected the students’ reading comprehension. So, English teachers were suggested to apply Think Pair Share in order to improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research was aimed to explain the indices in evaluating English Summative test based on item analysis. In addition, this research was also aimed to find out the quality of the English Summative test for Ninth Grade Students of SMPS Letjen S Parman Medan based on item analysis, which covers item facility, item discrimination, and distractors efficiency. This research was descriptive-quantitative research. The data were taken from the English Summative Test, answer key, and the students’ answer sheets. The data were collected by documentary technique. There were three indices in evaluating English test based on item analysis, they were: item facility, item discrimination, and distractor efficiency. There was 0% very difficult item, 76% moderate item, and 24% very easy item. Item with negative discrimination were 2.22%, zero discrimination were 6.67%, low discrimination were 20%, moderate discrimination were 60%, and high discrimination were 11.11%. Items with functioned distractors were 42% and items with non-functioned distractors were 58%. The quality of English summative test for ninth grade students of SMPS S Parman was moderate. There were 11.11% good items, 57.78% moderate items, and 31.11% bad items.Keywords: Test, Item Analysis, Item Facility, Item Discrimination, Distractors Efficiency.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the errors in simple past tense of recount text. In addition, this study is also aimed to describe the causes of those errors. This study apllied the descriptive qualitative approach of which the data were obtained from the recount texts that were written by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Doloksanggul. The data were collected by using students’ recount texts and interview. The data then were analyzed by identifying the errors first, then describing the errors, and the last explaining the errors. The errors that occurred in students’ recount text are error of omission, error of mis-formation, error of addition and error of mis-ordering. The result of the study indicates that the students made 893 of simple past tense errors which were 0,45% errors of misordering, 3,58% errors of addition, 30,12% errors of omission, and 65,85% errors of mis-formation. The dominant type of errors made by the student is errors of mis-formation. The students’ errors were caused by 36,17% intralingual interference, 58,23% interlingual interference, and 5,6% communication strategies.

Abstract

In the process of learning English as a foreign language, many students make errors in pronouncing English words. This study aimed to identify kinds of pronunciation errors, specifically pronunciation errors on consonant and vowel sounds. And to find out the causes of error in English pronunciation of grade 11 students at SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The research was conducted by descriptive qualitative methods. In collecting data, firstly recording the pronunciation of students’ speaking performance. Then, transcribing their utterances which contains consonant and vowel sounds. Furthermore, the data are analyzed. Finally, the result of the analysis shows that the total of kinds of pronunciation errors are 40 data. Misformation is the most frequent errors were made by the students. It is the highest number which 23 data out of 40 or 57,5% of the percentage. Then, omission error which 8 data out of 40 or 20%. Addition error which 8 data out of 40 or 20%. And thelast kind of error is misordering. The data is 1 out of 40 or 2,5% of the percentage. This study also found the causes of students’ error according to interlingual and intralingual transfer.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of using mind mapping strategy on the students’ achievement in writing procedure text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was grade X students of SMA Negeri 1 Merbau Labura divided into two groups, namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using mind mapping strategy, while the control group was taught by using lecturing method. The instruments used to collect the data was writing procedure text. After the data were analyzed, it was found that the value of t-observed was 2.764 with the degree of freedom (df)= 58 at the level of significance 0.05. It means that t-observed was higher than t-table (2.764 >2.000). The result of this study showed that teaching procedure text by using mind mapping strategy was higher than that by using lecturing method. It implies that mind mapping strategy is appropriate to be applied for writing procedure text.
