Abstract

The emergence of ICT in teaching and learning has contributed to improving the quality of education, because teaching and learning is ultimately an active and interesting process linked to real-world situations. ICT can be integrated into all subjects outside of physical education, including language, comprehension, math, science, and environmental science. This research examines trends and identifies publications concerning ICT in Mathematics Learning by analyzing the most prolific document sources, rankings of institutions or universities, prominent journals and articles, as well as keyword usage. Utilizing data from the Dimensions database, a total of 390 documents were gathered through the Publish or Perish (PoP) application, consolidated into a single RIS file, and analyzed using the VOSviewer application to generate network and overlay visualizations. The findings reveal an increasing trend in publications on ICT in Mathematics Learning over the past five years, with Indonesia leading in the number of documents (66), "Guangxi Normal University" as the top institution, "Journal of Physics: Conference Series" as the most prominent journal, and the article by Lo et al. (2018) as a key reference. The keyword "ICT" is not commonly associated with other variables such as case studies or stems, presenting a gap that offers opportunities for future research in this area.

Abstract

This study explores students' mathematical computational thinking ability in solving the Pythagorean Theorem problem. This research method used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The subjects involved in this study were 12 junior high school students. Six students in grade 7 had not studied the Pythagorean Theorem, and six students in grade 8 were studying the Pythagorean Theorem. This study's results indicate several problems with students' mathematical computational thinking skills in mathematics learning. The first problem is seen from the aspect of abstraction. Students are given problems with the help of digital-based teaching aids. Then the researcher provides procedures containing questions so students can digest the information and follow their intuition to find a solution strategy. Still, students have not decided what information should be stored or ignored. The second problem is seen from the aspect of decomposition. Students have not been able to decompose complex problems into simpler and more manageable ones. Student responses are also still not according to the researchers' predictions. However, with the scaffolding technique, researchers can direct students' intuition or thought processes to focus more on the problem being asked. The third problem is seen from the aspect of generalization. Students have not been able to generalize the problem and have not been able to conclude from the steps that have been taken. These three problems indicate that students cannot recognize and identify patterns well, thereby reducing the efficiency of the mathematical problem-solving process.

Abstract

Mathematics is fundamental in structuring religious practices, especially in determining prayer times. This study explores the mathematical concepts embedded in the traditional bencet tool used by communities to calculate prayer times accurately. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the research examines both the use and crafting of bencet through observations, interviews, and documentation. Based on the Miles and Huberman model, data analysis reveals that the bencet tongkat unconsciously incorporates mathematical concepts such as parallel lines, measurements, and planar surfaces. Similarly, the bencet garis reflects understanding parallel and perpendicular lines, circular constructions for 90° angles, and precise measurements. The findings underscore the deep interconnection between mathematical principles and cultural traditions. This study concludes that the bencet tool represents an untapped resource for ethnomathematics research. The implications highlight the potential of ethnomathematics as an innovative approach to mathematics education, integrating cultural heritage into learning.

Abstract

The study of numeracy has grown rapidly in the last decade, especially after the implementation of the Minimum Competency Assessment (MCA) in Indonesia since 2021. This research aims to map the development of numeracy research globally through bibliometric analysis, with a computational mapping approach using Bibliometrix in RStudio and VOSviewer. Article data was taken from the Scopus database published from 2014 to 2023. Article titles, keywords and abstracts guided the search process with reference to the keyword ‘numeracy’. A total of 811 documents were identified, of which 699 were cited. The analysis showed an increasing publication trend, with a predominance of contributions from specific countries and institutions, and a thematic focus on academic achievement, cognitive ability and early literacy. Keyword visualisations also reveal interrelationships between topics and show that the integration of technology in numeracy learning is still relatively limited. The findings provide a comprehensive overview of the structure and direction of numeracy research and open up opportunities for further exploration in digital and interdisciplinary learning contexts.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy is a crucial competency for 21st-century teachers to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills in various educational contexts. However, several pieces of evidence suggest that many prospective teachers struggle to develop mathematical literacy, which may hinder the effectiveness of mathematics learning. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the mathematical literacy of prospective teachers through a systematic literature review of previous research. The study used the PRISMA protocol by searching articles from five reputable databases (ERIC, ProQuest, Taylor & Francis, Emerald Insight, and Scopus) using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Of the initial search results of 8659 articles, only 13 articles were eligible for further review after the screening and duplication removal process. The analysis was focused on six research questions which included: (1) the geographical distribution of the research, (2) the academic background of the research subject, (3) the research topic, (4) factors that affect mathematical literacy, (5) the readiness of prospective teachers, and (6) the form of debriefing by the teacher education program. The results showed that the mathematical literacy of prospective teachers was influenced by both internal factors, such as conceptual comprehension, self-efficacy, and anxiety, as well as external factors, including pedagogical training and sociocultural contexts. However, most teacher education programs have not optimally emphasized the development of contextual and applicative mathematical literacy. This study highlights the importance of strengthening the teacher education curriculum through a contextual, activity-based, and culturally responsive approach, enabling prospective teachers to develop and effectively implement mathematical literacy in diverse learning contexts.     Keywords: mathematical literacy, prospective teacher, systematic review, teacher education, pedagogical preparation.
