Abstract

Treatment recommendations for cancer patients are carried out according to clinical assessment, type and stage of cancer and treatment guidelines. However, many patients do not accept the recommendations. This raises obstacles in managing of cancers, which not only affects the patients, but also the family and people around the patients. This problem could increase morbidity, mortality and recurrence rate, which might result in lower quality of life. Since this condition is a complex problem, there is necessity to explore and determine various determinants from different levels. The aim of this systematic  review was to explore the acceptances of cancer treatments among cancer patients and its associated determinants. Articles published from 2010 to 2023 were searched in four databases: ScienceDirect, Medline, Google Scholar and PubMed. Articles written in English and focussing on three main cancer treatments (surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy) were eligible.  A narrative approach was used and the data were analysed into selected themes. Data suggest that several factors influence patient acceptance for cancer therapy including sociodemographic, economic and spiritual cultural backgrounds; patient knowledge and perceptions; community support, as well as policy and availability of health facilities.  The determinants consist of individual, interpersonal, institutional, community and public policy level and interaction between levels are contributing to cancer treatment acceptance. In conclusion, cancer treatment acceptance remains a problem in particular in low middle income countries. In addition, the data on radiotherapy referral acceptance were limited and needed further study.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a negative impact on the mental health of health workers worldwide. Many studies examined the mental health of the frontline health workers in hospitals, but similar research on health workers at the port entries has yet to be found. The aim of this study was to determine the mental health issue and its associated factors and to determine psychological resilience factors of port health workers in Sabang, Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. A retrospective mixed method study was conducted among 38 port health officers. Total sampling included those working from January 2020 to March 2023. The information on age, gender, qualification, working time and working place of the respondents were collected and the mental health was assessed using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). The correlation and association between the socio-demographic data and mental health were tested with Spearman and chi-squared test, respectively. The qualitative study on psychological resilience factors were performed with interviews and analyzed with NVivo. This study indicated that 47.4% of port health officers experienced depression, 63.1% anxiety and 50.0% stress. Age and working time significantly affected the mental health. Age correlated positively and significantly with anxiety (p<0.0001) and stress (p<0.0001), while working time significantly affected the anxiety (p=0.003). The psychological resilience factors identified were spirituality, positive emotions, official support and personal wellbeing that helped the workers taking learned lessons. In conclusion, mental health issue is high among frontline workers during the pandemic highlighting the importance of the prevention measures to ensure the work performance among employee.

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, especially those with hemodialysis, frequently struggle with mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Psychotherapy has been known to treat psychological problems, but its effectiveness in managing CKD patients is still rarely scientifically proven. The aim of this study was to analyze the role of psychological treatments in improving the mental health of CKD patients with hemodialysis. We comprehensively reviewed the related studies published in PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Clinical Key over the last ten years, up to June 7, 2023. A keyword combination was used in the search engine strategies, and all articles about CKD patients receiving hemodialysis and psychotherapy were included. Based on the eligibility criteria, 716 patients were included in 13 out of 18,830 studies in the final analysis. Psychological problem was complained by 399 CKD patients. The psychotherapy included cognitive behavioral therapy (reported in four studies, n=4), diaphragmatic breathing relaxation (n=1), meditation (n=1), hypnotherapy (n=1), Kidney Optimal Health Program (KOHP) (n=1), psychological intervention (n=1), murottal Al-Qur'an therapy (n=3), and spiritual therapy (n=1). These interventions were performed once to four times a week, for ten minutes to five hours during hemodialysis for two to ten weeks. Meditation and KOHP showed no significant improvement in anxiety and depression. The remaining psychotherapies significantly improved the quality of life by reducing anxiety and depression in hemodialysis patients and enhancing sleep quality, self-esteem, hopefulness, medication adherence, and physical condition. In conclusion, psychotherapy should be considered in an interdisciplinary team to treat CKD patients comprehensively. Further studies are still necessary to determine the efficacy of each psychological intervention in CKD patients with psychiatric problems.

Abstract

Literature reveals that there are numerous factors that affect students' academic achievement. These factors range from internal factors with varying degrees of influence. Determining the dominant factors is highly useful as part of the effort and the planning of potential actions regarding what can be done to improve students’ academic achievement. The present study employed a systematic literature review method to identify the dominant factors. Results show that there are four dominant factors that affect students’ academic achievement. They are academic motivation, emotional intelligence, teachers, and peers. This finding confirms the complex nature of the factors that affect students’ academic achievement, which involve internal and external factors. Without disregarding the other factors, these findings suggest that schools and parents should pay close attention to the dominant factors in order to improve students’ achievement.

Abstract

The Performance Failure of Appraisal Inventory. Education plays an important role in improving Indonesia's human resources, but some individuals are constrained by costs. The government provides Bidikmisi scholarship for students who are academically capable but have economic limitations. Bidikmisi students are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.00, but there are still many Bidikmisi students who have a GPA 3.00 because they procrastinate in completing their assignments. One of the causes of individuals committing procastination is the fear of failure, which is a feeling of being threatened by facing circumstances that allow failure to occur. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between fear of failure and procrastination in Bidikmisi students. This study uses a quantitative approach with pusposive sampling technique therefore 233 Bidikmisi students who have a GPA 3.00 were selected. Data collection uses the adaptation of the Tuckman Procrastination Scale and the adaptation of The Performance Failure of Appraisal Inventory. The results of data analysis using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation shows the value of the correlation coefficient (r)=0.288 with a significance value (p)=0.000 (p 0.05). This shows that there is a relationship between fear of failure and procrastination in Bidikmisi students. That is, the higher the fear of failure, the higher the procrastination, and vice versa. The fear of failure that arises is caused by Bidikmisi students not being confident in their own abilities and avoiding negative judgments from other people, resulting in procrastination.

Abstract

Background: Bullying in the school environment causes students to feel depressed and not want to go to school, which leads to depression, anxiety, stress and suicidal behavior. Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of the application of Islamic counseling guidance in overcoming the mental condition of bullying victims in junior high school students. Method: Quasi-experiment with a control group was used in three junior high schools in Banda Aceh City. Bullying conditions among students at the research location were selected through screening and determining the sample size based on power analysis with a medium effect size, power (0.08), 95% confidence level and alpha 0.05. The total sample was 192 students divided into three groups, namely the Islam-based intervention group (n=64), the health-based intervention group (n=64) and the control group (n=64). The three groups were evaluated at baseline (pre-test), one week after the intervention (post test 1) and 1 week after post-test 1 (post-test 2) using The Olweus Bully Victim Questionnaire and Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales - Youth version (DASS-Y). The intervention was carried out using face-to-face guidelines. Results: Shows that the Islam-based group experienced a decrease in bullying behavior (p=0.000), stress (p=0.014), anxiety (p =0.014) and depression (p =0.014) after the intervention. Between the Islam-based group, health-based group and control group there were significant differences after one week of intervention (post-test 1) in the conditions of bullying (p =0.000), stress (p =0.002), anxiety (p = 0.030) and depression (p = 0.006). The same thing also happened after one week post-test 1 (post-test 2), where there were significant differences in the conditions of bullying (p =0.000), stress (P=0.000), anxiety (p =0.006) and depression (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The bullying prevention program has a significant influence on the incidence of bullying or psychological disorders. Islamic-based bullying prevention has been proven to be effective in reducing bullying incidents and improving psychological status.   Keywords: Guidance and Counseling; Bullying; Islam; Students; Victim Mentality.   Pendahuluan: Bullying di lingkungan sekolah menimbulkan perasaan depresi pada siswa dan tidak ingin bersekolah sehingga berujung pada depresi, kecemasan, stres dan perilaku bunuh diri. Abstract

Medical personnel is a profession with a high workload. High work demands can lead to a decline in physical and emotional health. An in-depth understanding of the impact of workload on health, especially mental health, is crucial to implementing measures for their well-being. This literature review aims to gather and compare available information to produce an apparent picture of the mental health of medical personnel and influencing factors. A comprehensive search was conducted utilizing a variety of electronic databases, including Scopus, Science Direct, Springer Link, ProQuest, EBSCO, MED-LINE, and Google Scholar. The literature search focused on papers assessed with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) methodology. We identified 16 studies that reported the criteria for in-depth analysis. The study concluded that overburdened medical personnel are prone to burnout, which in turn has the potential to lead to mental health problems. Common disorders are burnout, depression, anxiety, and abnormal stress. Further research sourced from internal individuals needs to be done so that it is expected to be more robust and consistent, considering that medical personnel are very likely to work in more than one institution during the process.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between parenting dimensions and hardiness personality in university students. This research employs a quantitative design involving 367 students aged 18-21 from four universities in Banda Aceh, selected using Multistage Cluster Sampling and Disproportionate Stratified Random Sampling techniques. The hypothesis testing in this study employs Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The results indicate correlation coefficients of r = .229 (p < .05) for the warmth dimension, r = -.189 (p < 0.05) for the rejection dimension, r = .319 (p < .05) for the structure dimension, r = -.123 (p < .05) for the chaos dimension, r = .407 (p < .05) for autonomy support, and r = -.007 (p > 0.05) for the coercion dimension. The findings of this study suggest that an increase in the warmth, structure, and autonomy support dimensions is associated with an increase in hardiness personality. However, an increase in the rejection and chaos parenting dimensions is associated with a decrease in hardiness personality. The coercion dimension was found to have no relationship with a hardy personality. This study demonstrates that implementing positive parenting dimensions by parents can enhance the hardiness personality among students. Furthermore, it offers insights for higher education institutions to develop psychological support programs and soft skills training that can assist students in fostering a hardiness personality.

Abstract

Law students at Syiah Kuala University (USK) face significant challenges in planning their careers, mainly due to a lack of understanding of career opportunities in the legal field and limited access to career counseling services. This condition often results in uncertainty in career decision-making, which has an impact on anxiety and academic performance. This community service activity aims to provide a solution through the implementation of a structured career counseling program. The method used is descriptive quantitative research which includes individual counseling sessions and assessments using inventory tests, in the form of The Student Career Construction Inventory (SCCI), Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ) and Color Personality Test. The results of this community service activity indicate that some students gain increased knowledge and understanding related to the career they want to achieve. In addition, there are mental health conditions and personalities that also show a relationship with the need for career counseling in students.
