Abstract

Abstract

Kabupaten Bantul memiliki panjang garis pantai mencapai 17 km.

Abstract

Urbanization creates opportunities for Indonesia, potentially to boost economic growth and create vibrant cities (metropolitan). Urbanization and agglomeration economies should be an important element in Indonesia‘s development as a mid-income country. Manufacturing industry becomes a dominant economic sector in metropolitan area such as Semarang that shows urbanization-industrialization relationship. Industrial agglomeration potentially induces socio-economic changes in the region. To prepare these changes, it is important to understand the spatial dynamics of agglomeration and predict its determinants locally. This paper aims to answer questions related to the spatial patterns and determinants of industrial agglomeration in Semarang Regency, a periphery of Semarang metropolitan. Nearest Neighbor Analysis is used to identify spatial patterns, followed by Ellison and Glaeser Index to measure agglomeration strength, and Specialization Index to measure industrial specialization. Geographically Weighted Regression is used to identify determinants of agglomeration. Analysis uses geographical database of Large and Medium Industries in 2016 and related sub-district based data. Result shows 11 of 21 sub-sectors of industries geographically form clustered (agglomerated) pattern. Six of them are strongly agglomerated (most localized). High specializations in these six sub-sectors occur in 14 sub-districts. Result obtains a significant spatial regression model explains the effect of independent variables simultaneously occurring in three sub-sectors: beverages; wearing apparel; wood and products of wood and cork, except furniture, articles of straw and plaiting materials. Partially, industrial agglomeration by three sub-sector’s specializations in sub-district level is determined by variables: industrial employment; vocational school; Gross Regional Domestic Product; population; arterial road; agricultural land availability; and agricultural households.

Abstract

The south coastal region of Yogyakarta Province (YSP) in Indonesia has inherited a unique farming system called sawah surjan, which is considered as a cultural heritage that demonstrates a form of local wisdom in managing land resources with poor drainage. The local residents have succeeded in realizing their desire of making the farming system ecologically stable and capable of providing a decent living. As a cultural heritage, however, sawah surjan has been under an increasing threat of conversion resulting from the infrastructure development and spreading of urban developments. This study assessed the prospect of sawah surjan in the rural household economy and its sustainability within the context of changing wider environment. To do so, a household survey was conducted covering 41 farmer households in Depok Village, Panjatan Sub-district, Kulonprogo Regency, Yogyakarta Special Province where the existence of sawah surjan is threatened by the large-scale investments. The research show that sawah surjan contributes to employment generation, diverse sources of income, food security, and income redistribution. It is generally sustainable but the excessive use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers will have adverse effects on its sustainability. The research confirms that the most significant threat is the infrastructural development, especially the prospective construction of a new international airport as increased land prices may lead to uncontrolled conversion of sawah surjan into non-agricultural uses. This is also in coincidence with the stagnant regeneration of farmers in the area that lead to a bleak future of the system.

Abstract

From 2009 to 2015, the growth of tourism in the tourist villages (desa wisata) of Karimunjawa underwent rapid progress. However, the level of poverty in Karimunjawa remained high. Nevertheless, the involvement of rural people in the sustainable development of tourism has received only limited discussion. Therefore, this article discusses the rural communities’ adaptation and resilience in Karimunjawa with the support of sustainable development planning in tourist villages. It covers the background of sustainable development, the elements of the communities’ adaptive capacity and resilience, and the role of the regional government. Empirical evidence of variations in the capacity to respond to changes of socioeconomic and ecological environments due to tourism development is presented. In addition, a case study is used in this article to describe how the people learned from their experience, knowledge, and past efforts. To obtain the necessary information, in-depth interviews were conducted with a number of key informants in the tourist villages of Karimunjawa, which were selected via purposive and snowball sampling. The results of the research show that social resilience will increase among those communities that are capable of accessing flexible social networks. These social networks are practical tools that open up the dissemination of new information and knowledge. This is a key element for a stronger process of transformation. Furthermore, communities that have capital and financial access as well as skills will also be capable of adaptation to the transformation process.

Abstract

It is believed that local food crops are available widely in rural regions. However, not all of the people consume them. The facts also show that local food crops are placed as secondary sources of foodstuff. This research aims at (1) describing the profile of local food crops consumed by the poor rural households and 2) exploring causes and mechanism of the poor rural household in maintaining local food crops as their food sources in the three different geographical regions of Kulon Progo Regency, namely the upland region, the transitional region, and the lowland region of Kulon Progo Regency. A household survey is conducted to achieve the above mentioned objectives. Respondents of this research arechosen purposively from the poor households’ data as listed by the Kulon Progo Regional Planning Board to represent the three regions in the regency. Three districts in the regency are selected to represent the three types of regions respectively, i.e: Samigaluh, Pengasih, and Lendah. A questionnaire is distributed in order to collect the data from the selectedhousehold respondents. The findings of this research are (1) there are various kinds of local food crops that were consumed by the respondents from three different geographical regions. The researchers collected that there were 36 types of local food totally from these three geographical regions, (2) there were also several motives that were important to be described in order to explained the reason why the respondents processed local food crops such as to be sold or to be consumed by themselves, (3) spatially, there are a specific pattern of harvested local food crops based on the respondents perceptions in three geographical areas: (i) based on nature, and (ii) based on human decision , (4) there were also various methods of utilisation local food crops, such as boiled, fried, steamed,  cooked into intermediate products, or cooked into final commodities that were ready to be consumed.

Abstract

In the last eight years (2008-2016), some areas in the northern part of Pekalongan have been experiencing coastal inundation. There have been social, economic and physical disruptions caused by coastal inundation particularly on built environments, paddy fields, and fishpond. The capacity of these areas to provide support for community livelihood has decreased significantly. This accumulative environmental change leads to the emergence of vulnerable regions which are characterized by limited social and ecological capacity to respond hazards. In order to enhance the social-ecological resilience, it is necessary to identify how the community has elevated their capacity and improved their livelihood. This paper presents empirical evidence of various pathways on how the community has transformed their capacity to respond to the changing environment due to coastal inundation. Following case study approach, this paper explores how the community has learned from their experiences, knowledge, and efforts from the past, and transformed them into a better understanding to cope with, to adapt to, and to become resilient from coastal inundation. The research applied in-depth interviews involving key persons selected through purposive and snowballing samplings. They represented the most capable person in each sub-district whose important data and information related to coastal inundation at the individual, household, and community organization levels belong to. The scope of area observation was limited to six sub-districts adjacent to the coast in the North Pekalongan District. The results showed that social-ecological resilience is likely to enhance in a community with flexible networking building capability. Such networking is beneficial to spreading out the important information, novel knowledge and practical tools and solutions to the community. These are the key elements for new transformative pathways. However, there remain various community capacities with different achievements on transformative pathways necessary to the future empowerment initiatives. Only a few communities in Kandang Panjang Sub-district who have performed a short-term resilience due to their awareness on establishing social networking and several actions on environmental quality improvements.
