Abstract

During the early pandemic, teachers and students were abruptly forced to conduct teaching and learning remotely. Both were struggling to cope with the challenges in the emergency remote teaching (ERT) situation. It was quite common to hear students and teachers wishing to go back to school immediately for various reasons. After two years of remote teaching, some schools begin to open for face-to-face or offline learning. It is then interesting to know how the students and teachers responded to the school/ campus opening. This paper reports a small-scale survey involving 110 respondents, both teachers, and students at the secondary and tertiary levels. Thematic coding analysis was carried out to analyze the participants’ responses. This study revealed that 80% of the respondents opted for online distance learning over offline learning during the pandemic although they reported challenges of teaching and learning within the online mode. The percentage shifted after two years of distance learning. In terms of mode preference, 56% of respondents prefer to go back to offline mode but the remaining 44% want to stay in the online remote mode of teaching and learning. While the majority chose offline learning, several themes of concern emerged from the responses, and reverse eco-shock is the most prominent. As the students and teachers acknowledged the benefits and build comfort in the online teaching and learning environment, they indicate the reimaging of offline teaching and learning. It implies that the practice of offline learning will not be similar to that before the pandemic

Abstract

Local microorganisms (MOL) are one of the means in helping the process of plant growth made from organic materials. In this study, MOL was made from banana peels and other fruit skins, and java sugar was added when fermented for two weeks. Its use is carried out with four treatments: control, 1: 2, 2: 1, and 3 days. This study used quantitative data by observing the growth of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum) for 21 days, which experienced significant changes in their growth. Banana peel contains macro elements C, N, P, and K. Meanwhile, Javanese sugar in MOL can be used by microorganisms to obtain glucose for food. Local microorganisms have environmentally friendly properties and can help the plant growth process by working in the soil through plant roots. Despite these findings, the study exhibits limitations in experimental control and measurement of other variables influencing tomato plant growth beyond MOL utilization. Additionally, the significance of observed growth changes lacks clarity, warranting further investigation.

Abstract

Project-based Learning is still being a prominent method to be investigated. As the rapid advancement of technology has resulted in a more user-friendly virtual learning environment, this study aimed to investigate the implementation of Online PBL in teaching 4Cs. A total of 33 fifth-semester students, 22 females & 11 males, of a public university in Central Java were involved in this study. Observation and Likert-scale questionnaires were employed in collecting the data.  By calculating the overall score per item, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The result of this study shows five stages of Online PBL implementation starting from selecting the topic and the purpose, outlining the project, rehearsing the product, presenting the product, and assessing the product. Online PBL helps students to master creativity and innovation skills, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and collaboration skills. Based on the positive responses from students, Online PBL becomes a suggested method for assisting students in acquiring the 4Cs.

Abstract

In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it is essential to develop competitive individuals equipped with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) competencies. The government, actively promotes the integration of STEM across all educational levels, including secondary schools. This emphasis arises because STEM competencies are critical for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and help individuals address real-world challenges. This literature review explores the implementation of STEM in Indonesia, focusing on the tools and strategies applied in secondary education. Over the past six years (2016–2021), changes in STEM practices have been identified. From 25 articles were analyzed, covering aspects such as instructional materials and pedagogical strategies in secondary schools. The findings reveal the distribution of resources as follows: curriculum score 7.69%, lesson plans 20.51%, modules 15.38%, student worksheets 33.33%, books 10.25%, exam questions 10.25%, and curriculum documents 2.56%. In terms of teaching approaches, the data show 4% engagement in discovery-based learning, 52% in project-based learning, 36% in problem-based learning, and 4% in scientific learning. Overall, the results indicate that STEM competencies are still not widely implemented in Indonesia, as most scores remain at or below 50%. Thus, further efforts are necessary to strengthen STEM integration in the country.

Abstract

Abstract

Teacher agency has become an essential focus in understanding how teachers navigate instructional demands and professional challenges. This study investigates the agency of Indonesian novice English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers by examining four core properties of human agency as proposed by Bandura: intentionality, forethought, self-reactiveness, and self-reflectiveness. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and scenario-based vignettes involving three novice English teachers in Banyumas. The data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s (2014) interactive model, which involved data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing. These findings demonstrate that Indonesian novice EFL teachers exhibit all four core agency properties, intentionality, forethought, self-reactiveness, and self-reflectiveness, which are reflected in their classroom practices in varying degrees. While all participants expressed strong intentionality, their enactments of the other properties were predominantly reactive, shaped by immediate classroom challenges such as limited resources and low students’ motivation. The findings contribute to developing contextually informed teacher education by highlighting the complex interaction between personal goals and external demands in shaping agency. The study highlights the need for structured support and professional mentoring to help novice teachers strengthen their agency and transition toward more proactive and sustainable teaching practices.
