Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused sudden changes in the world of education, requiring teachers to adapt their teaching methods to online platforms. This narrative inquiry investigates the reflective practices of novice English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Indonesian schools during the transition to online learning. This research aims to explore how teachers reflect on their teaching performance and how this reflective practice influences their professional development. A qualitative approach was used to collect data from a sample of two novice EFL teachers working in schools in Indonesia. Data was collected through teachers' reflective journals that focused on their experiences and perceptions of online teaching practices. Teachers' reflections were analyzed thematically to identify common patterns and trends in their experiences. Preliminary findings suggest that novice EFL teachers actively engage in reflective practice to assess their teaching performance during online learning. Teachers demonstrated awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of their online teaching methods and expressed a willingness to experiment with new approaches to improve student learning. This study contributes to the understanding of how reflective practice influences novice EFL teachers' professional development in online learning contexts. This highlights the importance of ongoing self-evaluation and the potential benefits of incorporating reflective practice into teacher training programs. These findings have implications for policy makers, teacher educators, and school administrators, highlighting the need to support teachers in developing reflective skills to improve online teaching performance. Abstract

This case study explores the perceptions of translanguaging in the academic writing process of pre-service teachers. Drawing upon the theories of forms translanguaging (Baynham & Lee, 2019; Garcia & Lin, 2016; Hua & Wei, 2022) and the stages of writing proposed by Hyland (2003), this research delves into how pre-service teachers perceive and utilize translanguaging in their writing. The study integrates observations, interviews, and artifact analysis involving pre-service teachers to understand their engagement with translanguaging as both a communicative and pedagogical strategy. The findings show that pre-service teachers not only view translanguaging as a method for effective communication but also as a crucial tool for enhancing their engagement with academic content, particularly in the stages of topic selection, pre-writing, writing, and feedback. In addition, the significant use of translation, code-mixing, and code-switching underscores their linguistic adaptability in a multilingual academic context. This research contributes to the academic discourse by providing insights into the role of translanguaging in the academic writing process and its implications for future teaching practices.

Abstract

Field trips have long been recognized as a significant component of educational endeavours. While students at the primary and secondary levels commonly engage in such activities, the integration of field trips into tertiary education remains infrequent. University studend who attend the English classes are seldom afforded the opportunity to directly observe authentic professional environments or explore potential workplaces related to their future careers, experiences that can be facilitated through field trips. Additionally, given the increasing emphasis on the internship program held by Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, a gap arises as students are limited in their exposure to real-world work environments. The objective of this research endeavour was to investigate university students' perceptions of field trip activities and assess how these experiences contribute to the development of students' autonomous learning skills. Qualitative data for this study were collected through two questionnaires, a preparation and a reflection Google sheet. The participants consisted of 27 students enrolled in the International Relations Study Program at UPN Veteran Jakarta. The findings of the study revealed that field trips offer numerous benefits to English for Professional Purposes students, including enhancing their understanding of academic concepts, providing a deeper real-world context for learning, and fostering social interaction. The questionnaire results demonstrated a predominantly positive perception among the students. Furthermore, a majority of the participants reported engaging in autonomous learning activities during the field trip, facilitated by the opportunity to interact with industry professionals and seek their guidance through questioning.

Abstract

This study explores English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers' comprehension of autonomous learning and their strategies for fostering it. Utilizing qualitative research methods, including open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, data was gathered from teachers in Solo, Indonesia. The findings indicate that while teachers have a foundational understanding of autonomous learning, their practical application is still in the early stages. They recognize the significance of learner autonomy but often find it challenging to fully encourage students to learn independently. Although they express a desire to modify their teaching strategies to promote independence, they acknowledge the difficulties involved. The study underscores the necessity for further professional development to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills required to effectively promote autonomous learning in EFL classrooms. Future research should focus on strategies for supporting teachers in this area and examine the impact of autonomous learning on student outcomes.

Abstract

Transnational families in Indonesia currently still have many difficulties in developing and creating an ideology of language use that they implement in their families, with a variety of languages to maintain their family's ethnic identity. This research explores three research questions, as follows. (1) How did parents perceive the roles of various languages in shaping their children's future? (2) What languages were used in the family? This research finds the choice of language use within the context of Indonesian transnational families with different ethnic backgrounds. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design (Yin, 2014), this study employs 2 participants, a woman, and her mother, both of them are scholarship awardees, who negotiate language ideologies, practices, and policies within their families among linguistic diversity and transnational mobility. Through thematic analysis (Saldana, 2012) of data collection from semi-structured interviews and observation, revealed several initial, open, and axial codes. This finding of this research reveals 1). The differences ideology between two generation. 2). The family's efforts to balance maintaining English and Bahasa Indonesia language. The implication of this study is made for the language policy maker and other transnational parent.  In conclusion, this study highlights the complexities of language use in transnational families and demonstrates that these families face challenges and opportunities in creating an environment that supports language learning.
