Abstract

Science literacy in Indonesia is still a big challenge, as evidenced by the low scores in the latest PISA results. Low science literacy is caused by several factors including learning that is not contextualised and less relevant to everyday life. In addition, student involvement in learning is also very influential on the success of learning. Therefore, this study was conducted to measure the effectiveness of Guided Inquiry learning method combined with Nearpod learning media in improving students' science literacy. The study used a pre-experimental approach with a ‘one group pre-test post-test’ design model. The population in this study was class X students at SMA Negeri 1 Cimahi consisting of 11 classes. The sampling process was carried out randomly (random sampling), namely class X-11 which totalled 29 students. The results showed that the Guided Inquiry learning method combined with Nearpod learning media was effective in improving students' science literacy, especially in the aspects of designing and evaluating scientific investigations on environmental change material.

Abstract

The Ingenhousz photosynthesis experiment conducted in schools aims to verify the concept of plants producing oxygen. However, opportunities to develop students’ quantitative literacy and train science process skills (SPSs) remain limited, as photosynthesis experiments commonly employed in schools are predominantly qualitative. This research aimed to develop an alternative photosynthesis laboratory activity design (LAD) based on an analysis of existing LADs to enhance students’ quantitative literacy and SPSs. Using the Research and Development (R&D) method, this research focused on the effect of color spectra on photosynthetic rate—an aspect that presents novelty of this research. The existing LADs were analyzed in terms of relevance, competence, knowledge construction, and practical aspects, resulting in 83.3% (very good), 43.1% (fair), 58.3% (fair), and 55.6% (fair), respectively. The analysis results of these four aspects are the basis for developing the alternative LAD. The alternative LAD was developed and then validated, resulting in a validity value of 0.915, which is categorized as valid. The alternative LAD trial demonstrated that it can collect quantitative data and enhance students’ quantitative literacy and SPSs, with the blue light spectrum producing the highest photosynthetic rate at 0.4 ml/g. The quantitative literacy-based LAD fosters data-driven thinking crucial for future scientific inquiry. This supports cultivating more analytically skilled students equipped to face real-world environmental and scientific challenges.

Abstract

Education in the 21st century requires innovation and creativity as well as skills including scientific literacy skills and numeracy literacy, one of which is experimental learning. Often experiments are constrained by insufficient learning time so that learning becomes less meaningful. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of applying the discovery model using the blended learning method using a simple volumetric gasometer in supporting scientific literacy. This research is an experimental research conducted in February 2023 at a Bandung high school. The research population was 432 students of class X at a senior high school in Bandung, which were divided into 12 classes. The sampling technique used simple random sampling so that 70 students were obtained consisting of 35 people from one control class and 35 people from one experimental class. The instrument used is a PISA question with the theme of innovation in alcoholic fermentation technology. Instruments were in the form of multiple choice questions and true wrong choice questions to measure scientific literacy profiles. Based on the results of the research, it was found that the learning outcomes of the discovery model by means of blended learning with practical methods using a simple volumetric gasometer can support scientific literacy.

Abstract

This type of research is a quasi-experimental study, the research subjects were 70 Grade X students of SMAN X Cimahi. The purpose of this study was to see the effect of applying the Infographic-assisted Personal Digital Inquiry learning strategy on scientific literacy. The results of implementing an infographic-assisted personal digital inquiry learning strategy for science literacy test, the experiment class about indicator explaining the phenomenon scientifically has changed the medium category with an average value 65.14. For indicators evaluating and designing scientific questions even though there is the average value 54.28 still in the medium category on the results. And then, the average value of each indicator aspect of scientific literacy competence has changed, namely the indicator of interpreting data and evidence scientifically from the high category with an average value of 80.6. The Gain score obtained by the experimental class around 69.2% shows that these results are quite effective in learning. This can be seen from the Asymp value. Sig. (2-Tails) ranging from 0.000 <0.05, meaning that there is a significant differences in students' scientific literacy abilities using infographic-assisted digital personal inquiry learning strategies.

Abstract

This research is a quantitative descriptive analysis which aims to describe the implementation of scientific outbound learning on plant classification material to see students' classification and collaboration abilities using data obtained objectively. The research was conducted in the botanical garden of the Indonesia University of Education with class X students at Daarut Tauhid Girl’s Boarding High School Bandung as research subjects. The research instruments used were a questionnaire assessing the design of scientific outbound learning, classification ability questions, as well as questionnaires and observation sheets of collaboration ability. The results of the research show that students' classification abilities are not yet optimal as seen through the pretest results, with an average of 38.13 and the posttest results with an average of 50.93 have not passed the school's KKM figure of 76 due to several obstacles and causal factors found, such as reduced students interest after learning is completed, lack of motivation given to students, and limited use of smartphones. Students' collaboration abilities are indicated to emerge through scientific outbound learning activities based on the results of students' collaboration abilities assessment which are already included in the category of developing collaboration abilities and already possessing collaboration abilities

Abstract

Outdoor learning has become a relevant learning method to enrich students' learning experience in biology. Botanical gardens, as places that reflect biodiversity, offer unique potential for integrating outdoor learning. This study aims to describe students' perceptions of outdoor learning that has been carried out in the botanical garden as well as the potential and barriers. This research method is a case study. Data collection techniques were questionnaires, structured and semi-structured interviews. The sampling technique used was convenience sampling with a sample of 32 class x students at one of the high schools in Bandung. Responses were expressed in perception numeric index to quantitatively reveal the perceptions of grade 10 students towards the outdoor learning experience that has been carried out. The results revealed that out of 32 respondents, most students showed positive perceptions towards outdoor learning in the botanical garden with a mean index = 55.23 (range 42.5-65.0) with standard deviation (sd) = 6.0. This perspective is influenced by the potential and obstacles in the implementation of outdoor learning conducted in botanical gardens. The implications of this study open up opportunities to design learning strategies that are more effective and can be applied by teachers in organizing biology learning at the high school level.
