Abstract

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and remains the leading cause of mortality globally. Non-pharmacological interventions using local functional foods are promising alternatives for blood pressure management. SOYDRA pudding, a novel combination of soymilk and red dragon fruit, contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, isoflavones, and dietary fiber, which are known to have antihypertensive properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of SOYDRA pudding as a dietary intervention on blood pressure in patients with grade 1 hypertension. A randomized crossover trial was conducted from September to November 2024 at the outpatient clinic of the Arosuka Hospital, West Sumatra. Thirty-two participants aged 40–60 years with grade 1 hypertension were included in this study. The intervention consisted of consuming SOYDRA puddings twice daily (2 × 150 g/day) along with nutritional education over a 30-day period. Blood pressure measurements were performed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the dependent t-test and Wilcoxon test. Results, there was a statistically significant reduction in systolic blood pressure from 146,3 ± 6,2 mmHg to 132,5 ± 5,9 mmHg (p = 0,000) and in diastolic blood pressure from 92,7 ± 4,8 mmHg to 84,1 ± 4,2 mmHg (p = 0,000) after the 30-day intervention. In conclusion, the administration of the SOYDRA pudding at a dose of 2 × 150 g/day for 30 days significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with hypertension. These findings highlight the potential of functional food-based dietary strategies in non-pharmacological hypertension management.

Abstract

Background: Previous studies have reported that the risk of metabolic syndrome differs between obese and non-obese individuals based on food consumption and physical activity. Objective: This study aims to analyze differences in the association of food consumption and physical activity with the incidence of metabolic syndrome in individuals with and without central obesity.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study examined individuals aged 19 to 64 years using Riskesdas 2018 data. Sample characteristics, including smoking habits, alcohol consumption, food consumption, physical activity, anthropometric data, clinical data, and biochemical data were collected for univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses. Logistic regression was used as a multivariate analysis to investigate the association of food consumption and physical activity with the risk of metabolic syndrome in individuals with and without central obesity. Results: In this study, individuals with and without central obesity significantly increased risk of metabolic syndrome (p<0.05) due to consuming nearly all kinds of unhealthy foods (sweet foods, savory foods, fatty/cholesterol-rich/fried foods, grilled foods, processed meat/chicken/fish, soft drinks/carbonated drinks, energy drinks, and instant noodles/other instant foods). However, only individuals without central obesity who frequently consume seasonings (OR=1.519, 95% CI: 1.241-1.859) have a significant association with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. Meanwhile, only individuals with central obesity who often consume sugary drinks (OR=1.315, 95% CI: 1.132-1.529) are significantly associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. In addition, inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables as well as lack of physical activity also significantly increase the risk of metabolic syndrome in individuals with and without central obesity (p<0.05).Conclusion: Only the consumption of seasonings and sugary drinks shows a different relationship to the risk of metabolic syndrome in individuals with and without central obesity.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Prevention of cardiovascular disease can be performed with early detection and management of underlying risk factors as announced by the Ministry of Health in GERMAS since 2016. Obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes mellitus are conditions which have a high probability for progressing to cardiovascular disease if not detected early and treated properly. Examination of body fat composition, blood pressure and fasting-glucose tests are relatively affordable tests to do which performed as prevention management to prevent those condition mention before. Early detection is related to early management and promise better prognosis, especially in the productive age population. Puskesmas simpang sungai duren have competence medical team who work in primary health services. Equipped with laboratory facilities, but the laboratory has not been able to facilitate the examination of venous blood glucose metabolites with the COD-PAP method. Body fat composition assessment has also only been done with simple anthropometric measurements that have not been done with BIA because tools are not available. Related to this, the service proposal team proposed organizing this service activity by carrying out body fat assessment with BIA, blood pressure screening and glucose metabolism profile with standardized methods. The results of the screening will then be used as the basis for personal consultation and data submission to partner health care facilities for follow-up. Screening of cardiovascular disease risk factors in service participants found a total of 25 people suffering from hypertension, 5 people suffering from fasting hyperglycemia and 50 people suffering from obesity. Body fat composition screening found that 57 people had low fat mass, 64 people were classified as over fat and 30 people had high visceral fat mass. Abstract

Dietary fiber, resistant starch, bioactive compounds, phenolic antioxidants, flavonoids, and inulin are found in mangrove and banana flour. The combination of the two flours is expected to produce cookies that increase the metabolism of obesity. This study aims to identify the chemical characteristics, level of preference, and glycemic index of mangrove and banana flour cookies (mangpis) to increase metabolism in obese subjects. This study consists of three stages. The first stage of chemical characteristic analysis and preference level using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) design with 4 treatments with 2 repetitions. The second stage of the best and selected formula from the level of preference tests its glycemic index value and glycemic load using a Completely Randomized Design. and the third stage of steamed intervention using Pre-Post Randomized Control Group Design. The results showed that F1 had the highest air, dietary fiber, crude fiber, and resistant starch content, while F0 had the highest protein, energy, and carbohydrate content. F2 cookies had the highest fat content. The glycemic index of steamed F2 was included in the medium category with a low glycemic load. The 28-day F2 intervention reduced triglycerides but did not affect fasting blood sugar or insulin levels.

Abstract

Globally, stunting is a severe public health concern, especially in low- and middle-income nations like Indonesia. It is typified by stunted growth and development due to recurrent infections and chronic malnutrition. North Jakarta has a 19.8% stunting incidence, according to the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey. This indicates the critical need for additional research into the factors contributing to stunting, such as hair zinc levels, dietary habits, and infectious infections. This study employs an observational case-control design conducted in North Jakarta in March 2024. Stunting incidence and hair zinc levels are significantly correlated (p=0.000), affecting 87.5% of children with low hair zinc levels. Stunting is also correlated considerably (p=0.000) with incorrect feeding patterns; 75.7% of children who exhibit these patterns are stunted. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant correlation (p=0.806) between the incidence of stunting and a history of infectious illnesses. The mother's level of education, the child's age, gender, and family income did not significantly correlate with stunting.

Abstract

Diet plays an important role in managing mass, and muscle strength and preventing diseases related to malnutrition. A dietary pattern that contains several nutrients has a role in improving muscle performance and reducing the incidence of sarcopenia. This study aims to determine the relationship between dietary patterns and the incidence of sarcopenia in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study was a cross-sectional study conducted on 150 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus aged 40 years or older. Multivariate logistic regression tests were conducted to measure the effect of adherence to each dietary pattern on the possibility of sarcopenia. Three dietary patterns were identified through analysis of major components. After adjusting for confounding variables, subjects with healthy dietary patterns on the highest tertile had a lower odds ratio for developing sarcopenia (OR 0.584; 95% CI 0.070-4.865; p=0.000). In contrast, adherence to unhealthy dietary patterns was not associated with sarcopenia (OR 1.508; 95% CI 0.305-7.452; p=0.612).  Similarly, adherence to a mixed dietary pattern did not affect the likelihood of sarcopenia (OR 1.297; 95% Cl 0.341-4.931; P=0.704). This study shows that adherence to a healthy dietary pattern is associated with a lower chance of developing sarcopenia in people with type II diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Toddlerhood is an important period in human growth and development; during that period, if the nutrition is not adequate, they risk stunting. Some factors that cause this are energy intake, protein intake, parenting, and food security. In 2022, the prevalence of stunting is around 148 million (22.3%), most coming from Asia and Africa; according to WHO, in Indonesia, the prevalence of stunting is 21.6%. The incidence of stunting in Mentawai Islands Regency is 32%, the second highest rate below the national rate. According to the author's knowledge, this research is the first study to analyze the relationship between independent and dependent variables as well as the determinants of stunting in toddlers in the Sarereiket Health Centre using questionnaire data, direct observation, and interviews that have gone through a validation and reliability process from experts through the laboratory. The research aims to analyze the relationship between energy intake, protein intake, and hygiene of toddlers and the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 24-59 months in South Siberut District, Mentawai Islands Regency. The method used the observational method. The subjects of analysis were 393 toddlers aged 24-59 months in the Sarereiket Health Centre who were involved in this study. Multivariate regression was performed to identify the relationship between dependent and independent variables. The results indicate that toddlers' energy intake, protein intake, and hygiene are associated with stunting. The results of the multivariate analysis in this study indicate that protein intake and toddler hygiene influence stunting and contribute to increasing the incidence of stunting in toddlers. The conclusion is there is a significant relationship between energy intake, protein intake, and hygiene of toddlers and the incidence of stunting in the Sarereiket Community Health Centre, Mentawai Islands.

Abstract

Background: Inpatients' needs for nutrition are fulfilled by providing food services based on their specific requirements. Further, interventions focusing on improving their nutritional wellbeing can reduce their length of stay and at the same time improve the hospital's service quality. Objectives: The objective of this study is that to identify the relationship between quality of nutritional care and the patient's length of stay. Methods: This research reviews past quantitative studies available in the databases of NCBI-PUBMED, Springer Link, Cochrane and Google Scholar. They must be peer-reviewed articles published in English from 2017 to 1 October 2022, and the mean age of the patients being discussed is 18 years or more. As this study only reviews full articles, abstract-only texts were excluded. In addition, the data form the selected papers were extracted by three researchers. Discussion: From many factors influencing patient's length of stay, besides the fact that comorbidities affect the duration of the disease suffered by the patient, malnutrition during illness is the most dominant one. Comorbidities affect the duration of the disease suffered by the patient. Length of stay is influenced by patients' nutritional intake, so screening on which at hospital admission is crucial for their health status and length of stay. Conclusions: For hospitals, improving the quality of their nutrition services helps focus their attention to nutritional care, and rapid intervention can shorten length of stay. In addition, malnutrition is significantly worsened by mealtime barriers and poor food intake and prolongs length of stay.
