Abstract

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has reported a consistent global rise in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Conventional T2DM treatments such as metformin, sulfonylureas, and insulin therapy are effective. Still, they can lead to side effects, including gastrointestinal disturbances, hypoglycemia, renal impairment, weight gain, and complications associated with injection procedures. The herbal remedies are considered a natural alternative with fewer adverse effects. Acanthus ilicifolius (Jeruju) contains antioxidant compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins and may serve as a complementary therapy. This study investigated the effect of jeruju leaf brew at 6 ml/kg/day and 12 ml/kg/day on tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) levels. Using a true experiment with a randomized post-test only with a control group design, 30 rats were divided into five groups (K0, K−, K+, P1, and P2). After 28 days of intervention, groups P1 and P2 showed significant reductions in TNF-α (7.80 pg/ml and 6.94 pg/ml, respectively) and HOMA-IR (3.75 and 3.28, respectively). These findings indicate that a higher dose of jeruju leaf brew results in greater reductions in TNF-α and HOMA-IR levels in T2DM rats.

Abstract

TORCH infections (Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes simplex) pose significant risks during pregnancy, contributing to congenital abnormalities and adverse neonatal outcomes. In Indonesia, limited public awareness and inadequate preventive practices exacerbate these risks. This community service initiative aimed to enhance knowledge about TORCH infections among reproductive-aged women through a hybrid educational seminar. Conducted in collaboration with Peduli TORCH, the program utilized the "5P Framework" (Pathogen Awareness, Prenatal Screening, Pathogen Management, Postnatal Monitoring, Preventive Practices) to deliver evidence-based strategies. A total of 54 participants (87% female, 61.1% from Jambi Province) attended the seminar, combining in-person and virtual engagement. Pre- and post-tests assessed knowledge improvement, revealing a statistically significant median score increase from 70.0 to 100.0 (p<0.001, Wilcoxon test). Participants reported high satisfaction with the seminar’s content, interactive format, and accessibility, though logistical refinements were suggested for future iterations. The initiative successfully bridged knowledge gaps, emphasizing the importance of early screening, vaccination, and hygiene practices. By empowering women and leveraging community engagement, this program highlights the potential of targeted educational interventions to reduce TORCH-related morbidity and improve maternal-child health outcomes. Culturally adapted, hybrid approaches demonstrate promise for scalable public health strategies in low-resource settings.

Abstract

Natural disasters have crucial impacts on food aspects. This problem can be addressed by innovations in nutrient-dense products. However, the reality is that innovation in emergency food products is still minimal, especially in those with high protein content. This research created Mizepi products made from maize flour and Fish Protein Hydrolysate (FPH) for existing emergency food requirements. This organoleptic quality research was conducted on 112 consumer panelists with seven formulations of Mizepi and compared them with maize flour and FPH in grams such as F1 (1:1), F2 (4:7), F3 (4:11), F4 (7:4), F5 (7:11), F6 (11:4), and F7 (11:7) using the Hedonic Test and Just About Right (JAR) on nine scales. Selection of the best formulation was analyzed using the Effectiveness Index Test method. The shelf life test was carried out on the best formulation, namely F4 using the Accelerated Shelf-Life Testing (ASLT) method at temperatures of 35 oC, 45 oC and 50 oC respectively. Samples were observed every 7 days for 28 days. Parameters using water content and Free Fatty Acid (FFA). The organoleptic quality test with hedonic test explained that the product with the most preferred categories is in terms of aroma (F6), color (F1), texture (F4), flavor (F6 and F4), and overall (F4). The most favorable JAR test results for color of all samples were the same, namely yellow, savoriness (F4 and F6), typical savory aroma of corn (F5, F6, F7), typical savory aroma of fish (F3), and crunchy texture (F4). Test results for the shelf life of Mizepi products in the best formulation can be stored well for 46 days at a temperature of 35 oC with water content parameters. The best formulation of F4 meets emergency food requirements, namely it is acceptable in terms of taste, and acceptable.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder marked by chronic hyperglycemia and oxidative stress, which can reduce the activity of antioxidant enzymes like Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx). Acanthus ilicifolius (jeruju) contains antioxidant compounds such as flavonoids and phenolics that may enhance these enzyme activities. Evaluate the effect of Acanthus ilicifolius leaf infusion on SOD and GPx activity in Wistar rats induced with type 2 diabetes using Streptozotocin-Nicotinamide (STZ-NA). The experimental design used a post-test only with five groups: normal control (no diabetes, standard feed), positive control (diabetes + metformin 45 mg/kgBW), negative control (diabetes without treatment), treatment group 1 (diabetes + metformin 45 mg/kgBW + jeruju infusion 1.2 ml/200gBW), and treatment group 2 (diabetes + metformin 45 mg/kgBW + jeruju infusion 2.4 ml/200gBW). Treatments were given daily for 30 days, and all rats had free access to food and water. At the end of the study, blood samples were collected to measure SOD and GPx activity using spectrophotometry. The combination of Acanthus ilicifolius infusion and metformin particularly at the 2.4 ml/200gBW dose, was associated with elevated SOD P2 treatment group (76.23 ± 3.65 U/mL; p = 0.000 (<0.05)) and GPx activities P2 (52.11 ± 0.76 U/mL; p = 0.000 (<0.05))  compared to the untreated diabetic group K- (SOD) (28.43 ± 3.17 U/mL) and K- (GPx)(24.18 ± 1.08 U/mL). These findings proves Acanthus ilicifolius infusion holds potential as an adjuvant therapy to mitigate oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes by enhancing SOD and GPx enzyme activities.

Abstract

HIV/AIDS infection (ODHIV) remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia. One of the main challenges in managing HIV/AIDS is adherence to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy among ODHIV. Low adherence can lead to drug resistance, decreased quality of life, and increased risk of virus transmission. Factors influencing ARV adherence include stigma, discrimination, and the knowledge of ODHIV about the therapy. Education was conducted through group counseling, starting with a pre-test to assess participants' knowledge about HIV treatment. After the pre-test, a counseling session on "The Importance of ARV Adherence for People Living with HIV" was held, concluding with a post-test. A total of 27 participants took part in this activity, with the majority being male (59%) and the largest age group being 20-30 years (41%). Pre-test results indicated that 44% of participants had a low initial understanding. However, post-test results showed a significant improvement; 37% of participants scored in the 71-80 range, and another 37% scored in the 81-90 range. These results indicate that the education provided successfully enhanced participants' understanding of the importance of ARV adherence. Despite the improvements, challenges remain regarding adherence, particularly for those lacking family support. This highlights the need for additional strategies to enhance social support for ODHIV. Participation in this activity was predominantly male, with most participants having a high school education. The post-test results confirmed a significant increase in understanding compared to the pre-test. Puskesmas and community health workers should conduct regular monitoring and evaluation of ARV adherence to prevent loss to follow-up in treatment.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a growing public health concern worldwide, including in Indonesia. The Indonesian Chronic Disease Management Program (PROLANIS) aims to empower individuals and families affected by DM through community-based health education. This study employed an educational intervention delivered through a counseling session on the importance of family medicine principles and dietary management for DM patients. A pre-test was administered to assess the participants' baseline knowledge, followed by the educational session, and concluded with a post-test. A total of 37 participants were involved in this activity, the majority of whom were middle-aged women with a senior high school level of education. Pre-test results indicated that 57% of participants had a low level of understanding. However, the post-test revealed a significant improvement, with 76% of participants achieving a score in the 6-10 range. Nevertheless, some participants still required further guidance. Despite the observed increase in knowledge, the application of family medicine principles within the PROLANIS program in the working area of the Rawasari Community Health Center remains suboptimal. The active engagement of participants during the question-and-answer session highlighted the need for additional support in implementing these principles. The educational program successfully enhanced participants' understanding of diabetes management. However, continuous monitoring and periodic evaluation by the Community Health Center and community health workers (cadres) are necessary to improve the application of family medicine principles within the PROLANIS program in its designated area. Abstract

ABSTRACT Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and stroke. Among the components of dyslipidemia, triglyceride levels and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) are important indicators in assessing cardiovascular disease risk, making these examinations useful for screening risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome. However, healthcare facilities are often unable to conduct these assessments independently, necessitating a referral system to more comprehensive healthcare services. Our community service team aims to facilitate this by conducting lipid profile examinations at Puskesmas Pakuan Baru as an early detection effort for metabolic syndrome in women of reproductive age. The activities carried out included lipid profile testing, blood pressure measurement, and education regarding metabolic syndrome. The results from 26 participants indicated that 23.07% had elevated triglyceride levels, 73.08% had low HDL levels, and 19.33% were hypertensive. Based on these findings, women of reproductive age already exhibit risk factors for metabolic syndrome, suggesting that lipid profile assessments should be incorporated into routine screening programs to prevent the onset of metabolic syndrome.
