Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the significant effect of using learning media based on PhET Simulation on substance stress material on junior high school students' critical thinking skills using a quasi-experimental research methodology and a nonequivalent control group design. The subjects of this study were students of class VIIIF and VIIIH of SMPN 3 Jember. The results of the pretest-posttest were used to collect research data, and the parametric independent sample t-test was used to analyze the data. Based on the results of the study, the posttest mean value for the control class was 60.78, while the posttest mean value for the experimental class was 71.28. The mean value of the experimental class is higher than the control class. the mean value in the experimental class is better than the control class. The parametric test using the independent sample t-test found that there was a difference in the average score of the two classes' critical thinking skills with a significance of 0.000. Furthermore, it is strengthened by the right-hand t-test by realizing the value of tcount > ttable. These results determine that the mean score of critical thinking skills in the experimental class is higher than the control class. The difference in the results of critical thinking skills is due to the two classes being treated differently, namely the control class using video experiments and the experimental class using learning media based on PhET Simulation. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the use of learning media based on PhET Simulation on substance stress material has a significant effect on junior high school students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

While the engineering is expected to be a catalyst for integrated STEM education, engineering is also problematic, especially in countries with a fixed and centralized curriculum such as Japan. Therefore, translating the framework of integrated STEM into practice and exploring students’ engagement are essential. This study explored students’ engagement in STEM activities through the Engineering Design Process (EDP) in an elective science class. Our participants were sixteen students (aged 14–15) in a Japanese junior high school (JHS) that chose to participate for one semester. Through a single case study, we analyzed the students’ engagement with the activities from the individual and group perspectives. Data from self-assessments, worksheets, presentations, and videos of lessons were collected and analyzed. The results showed that the students’ level of engagement was very high. Exploration with co-occurrence network analysis showed that students’ engagement was associated with the topic of the activity, designing activity, and students’ relationships with their peers. An engineering element in an elective science class was valuable for JHS students and provided a way to enhance science lessons. Also, EPD facilitated essential skills in design and collaboration. Further research in balancing group and individual perspectives is needed.

Abstract

Science and engineering performance play an important role in science and engineering education. This study aims to identify science and engineering performance by using LKPD based Engineering Design Process (EDP). This type of research is qualitative using the method case study. Data was collected through observation, interviews and documentation. The validity of the data using triangulation techniques. The results of the study showed that the use of EDP-based worksheets can improve science and engineering performance in elementary school students. Students demonstrate a better understanding of science concepts and techniques and are able to apply them in the EDP included in the LKPD. But some students still think that science concept events are things that are rarely encountered in everyday life. So that students do not understand the science concept that occurs in a water filter. However, students are able to demonstrate the ability to identify problems, design solutions, and evaluate the results they get.

Abstract

Argumentation skills are very important in science learning which is used to build opinions with rational evidence to draw conclusions through logical reasoning. This research is a qualitative research with a case study approach to identify students' argumentation skills using learning Engineering Design Process (EDP). The subjects of this study were 12 students, each consisting of six male students and six female students in grade 7 junior high school. The data collected are in the form of observation data, documentation and interviews during learning. The collected data will be reduced, analyzed based on indicators of argumentation skills and presented and then drawn conclusions. The results showed that students' argumentation skills in EDP learning were dominated by components claim by 87%, 47% data, and 33% warrant. This shows that students' arguments are not have been good, so they are only able to provide claims without understanding the underlying reasons and the existing data relationships as evidence to support claims. Experience aspects, science concepts, and user needs help students build solution designs during learning. EDP through a collaborative process has helped and expanded students' ideas and arguments in solving problems.

Abstract

Scientific literacy is the ability to actively participate in discussions and understanding issues related to science and scientific ideas, serving as a form of participation as an informed citizen. The objective of this research is to examine the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of a student worksheets based on the engineering design process (EDP). The research type and design fall under research and development (R&D) and have been developed using the ADDIE research design through the steps of Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. Data collection included validation and student response questionnaires, implementation sheets, and scientific literacy tests to assess validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The validation questionnaire is used to measure validity, the student response questionnaire is used to determine student responses, the implementation sheet is used to assess the feasibility of the learning process, and the science literacy test is used to assess the improvement in students' scientific literacy. The validity analysis yielded a result of 90%, categorizing the EDP-based student worksheets as very valid. The practicality score of 86% demonstrates that the worksheets are highly practical for use in learning environments. Additionally, the effectiveness, measured through an N-gain value of 0.76, indicates a significant improvement in students’ scientific literacy. The student response questionnaire results, with an 84% score, reflect a very positive reception from students. These findings collectively confirm that the EDP-based student worksheets are valid, practical, and effective tools for enhancing scientific literacy among junior high school students. These results suggest that EDP-based worksheets can be a valuable tool for fostering scientific literacy among junior high school students, equipping them with the skills to engage in scientific discussions and make informed decisions as active citizens.
