Abstract

Selayar Regency occupies the sixth position for stunting in South Sulawesi, with a prevalence of 32.1%. This problem is exacerbated by the community's limited access to information about stunting, so educational efforts are needed to disseminate stunting information presented using spatial mapping patterns. This activity aimed to develop village maps and identify high-stunting areas using spatial maps to improve the quality of community development. This map-making activity begins with data collection, and then data processing is carried out using ArcGIS software, digitization methods, and spatial analysis in the form of overlay analysis. Maps that have gone through the layout stage are then printed and submitted to the village government and health workers. The utilization of this map of strategic locations such as village offices, health centers, and local nutrition centers assesses the success of this services activity as a source of information in determining priority steps in preventing and handling stunting cases.

Abstract

Background: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective strategy for preventing HIV, especially among high-risk groups such as injecting drug users, transgender individuals, sex workers, and men who have sex with men (MSM). In Indonesia, where HIV continues to pose a significant public health challenge, PrEP has the potential to decrease new infections. However, knowledge about PrEP among its users is limited. This study aims to investigate the relationship between users’ knowledge, attitudes, and adherence to PrEP, as well as their satisfaction with services, to design targeted interventions that address misconceptions, reduce stigma, and encourage long-term PrEP use. By offering insights into the experiences of PrEP users, the research seeks to improve PrEP accessibility, acceptability, and effectiveness, contributing to global efforts to end the HIV epidemic.Method: 200 registered PrEP clients in Puskesmas Andalas participated in this cross-sectional study. Structured questionnaires covering demographics, PrEP utilization, attitudes toward PrEP, and knowledge about PrEP were employed to gather data. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-squared testing, considering p<0.05 as statistically significant.Result: The study results show that 56.5% of participants knew enough about PrEP, while 58.5% held favorable opinions about using it. However, attitudes (p=0.135) and knowledge (p=0.062) showed no discernible effects on PrEP use. The findings suggest that PrEP uptake may be more significantly influenced by factors such as accessibility, pricing, and social stigma, even though education and positive attitudes remain crucial. The study concludes that increasing PrEP utilization among high-risk populations requires comprehensive strategies that tackle these barriers.

Abstract

Abstract

The increasing cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in Indonesia demands effective, affordable, and environmentally friendly vector control strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of recycled water-based attractants in improving the Larvae-Free Index (Angka Bebas Jentik/ABJ) compared to conventional water and brown sugar plus yeast attractants. The study was conducted over nine weeks in three hamlets with homogeneous environmental characteristics in Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi. Simple ovitraps were used to attract gravid female mosquitoes, while ABJ was measured through the inspection of natural containers. The results showed that recycled water significantly increased ABJ, reaching 96.08% in the eighth week, higher than conventional water (53.03%) and brown sugar plus yeast (37.50%). One-way ANOVA revealed a significant difference among attractant groups (p = 0.000), and further analysis using the Post-hoc Tukey test confirmed significant differences between recycled water and the other two attractants. In conclusion, recycled water proved to be an effective attractant for diverting mosquito oviposition from natural containers to ovitraps, thereby increasing environmental ABJ. This method has potential as a practical, sustainable, and community-based solution for vector control in dengue-endemic areas.

Abstract

Introduction: Contact dermatitis is a common health issue among fishermen caused by exposure to harsh working environments, including seawater, chemicals, and suboptimal use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Factors such as personal hygiene, history of skin diseases, and access to clean water can influence the incidence of contact dermatitis. The novelty of this study is combining environmental sanitation and occupational health factors of fishermen that influence contact dermatitis, which have previously been studied only partially. The results of this study also found that the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) variable acts as a moderating factor influencing contact dermatitis. This study aims to investigate the causal relationships between personal hygiene, history of skin diseases, PPE use, and access to clean water with the incidence of contact dermatitis among fishermen on Barrang Lompo Island. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to analysed the relationships between personal hygiene, skin disease history, PPE use, and access to clean water. SEM effectively evaluates interactions among latent variables, offering a robust approach to occupational health issues and providing insights into how individual and environmental factors influence dermatitis prevalence. Data were collected through structured interviews and validated questionnaires. Results: The analysis showed that personal hygiene and history of skin diseases had significant relationships with the incidence of dermatitis (p < 0.05). However, PPE use and access to clean water did not show a significant direct effect. Conclusion: Improving personal hygiene practices and targeted interventions for individuals with a history of skin diseases are essential for reducing contact dermatitis among fishermen. Education on proper hygiene techniques and optimizing PPE use are recommended for maximum protection.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of emotional solidarity and quality of life on residents’ support for tourism development in Ternate, Indonesia, an emerging destination with tourism infrastructure constraints, utilizing Social Exchange Theory (SET) as a theoretical framework. Data from 416 residents, collected through a carefully crafted survey, were analyzed using structural equation modeling to assess the interplay among Welcoming Nature, Emotional Closeness, Sympathetic Understanding, Quality of Life, and Support for Tourism. Findings reveal that Welcoming Nature and Emotional Closeness significantly enhance Quality of Life and tourism support, with Quality of Life partially mediating these effects. Sympathetic Understanding, however, has minimal impact due to limited resident-tourist interactions. By advancing emotional solidarity and Social Exchange Theory, this study highlights the critical role of affective factors in emerging tourism contexts. The cross-sectional design limits insights into temporal trends, necessitating longitudinal research, while comparative studies are essential to test generalizability.  The study suggest that improving infrastructure and promoting community-based festivals can foster sustainable tourism by enhancing resident-tourist interactions and quality of life. Policymakers and tourism planners should prioritize community engagement to ensure equitable tourism development. This research offers a novel application of emotional solidarity and SET in an underexplored emerging destination, emphasizing the mediating role of quality of life and the limited influence of Sympathetic Understanding in contexts with constrained resident-tourist interactions

Abstract

A number of behavior-based illnesses are linked to inadequate soap handwashing. This demonstrates how important it is to practice hand washing with soap (HWWS). Teaching children to wash their hands with soap at a young age is the goal of this education program. Children in school are the ideal audience for HWWS promotion activities since they are receptive to new information and eager to share it with others. This activity used the educational game method with Hand's Card media (picture cards) and installation of HWWS poster. This service was conducted on January 13 and 14, 2023, at five public elementary schools (SDN) in Bonto Matene Village, South Sulawesi: SDN 26 Mangkaca, SDN 9 Mangkaca, SDN 34 Citta, SDN 1 Segeri, and SDN 2 Segeri. Students in Bonto Matene Village's grade 4 elementary school are benefiting from this activity, as seen by their excitement and participation in HWWS instruction, as well as by the notable changes of knowledge (p-value0.05) that occur both before and after education. It is anticipated that students will be able to put HWWS into practice in order to foster a HWWS culture that can enhance health.
