Abstract

Ships are a means of transportation used in maritime transport activities, yet maintaining propulsion stability and efficiency remains a critical challenge, especially for multi hull vessels such as trimarans operating under dynamic sea conditions. Conventional controllers such as PID and field oriented control (FOC) often struggle to adapt to fluctuating loads and external disturbances. This study addresses that gap by applying Sliding Mode Control (SMC) for brushless DC (BLDC) motor speed regulation on a trimaran prototype. The system employs an STM32 microcontroller integrated with voltage, current, and RPM sensors to provide real time monitoring and robust control. Both static and dynamic tests were conducted at various speed setpoints with artificial wave disturbances. The results indicate that the SMC based system effectively reduced RPM deviation from ±550 RPM in uncontrolled systems to as low as ±3–15 RPM, while current and voltage consumption remained stable within 5%. Furthermore, propulsion efficiency improved by approximately 17% compared to conventional PID control. The most stable performance was achieved at the 8000 RPM setpoint, where current consumption reached 3.9–4.1 A, lower than the 4.7 A observed in uncontrolled operation. However, system performance declined at 10,000 RPM due to nonlinear load effects. These findings demonstrate that SMC provides a robust, adaptive, and energy efficient solution for BLDC motor control in trimaran propulsion, offering significant advantages over traditional methods and serving as a foundation for further optimization in high speed applications.

Abstract

Indonesia as a maritime nation with vast and strategic oceanic territory, continues to develop efficient and innovative ship technologies. This research focuses on the design and construction of a speed monitoring system for a trimaran vessel using the Pixhawk controller. The system integrates a Pixhawk autopilot unit as the main controller, an STM32 microcontroller for processing, dual BLDC motors, an internal combustion engine (ICE), and a remote control system. The Internet of Things (IoT) platform is employed for real-time data logging and monitoring. Experimental tests were conducted on five reference speed levels slow patrol, reconnaissance, medium patrol, cruising, and chase modes. Quantitative results show that the system achieved rapid response times at medium speeds, with stable operation and an average delay below 0.5 seconds. At high speeds, however, stability decreased by 15–20% due to environmental and load variations. Remote control communication maintained stable performance up to 210 meters with obstructions and 280 meters without obstacles. The results demonstrate that the system effectively supports real-time speed monitoring for trimaran vessels. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of hybrid propulsion and adaptive control within an IoT-based Pixhawk monitoring system, contributing to advancements in smart maritime technology.

Abstract

This study aims to design and test a Dual Axis Solar Tracker to improve the energy absorption efficiency of solar panels on ships. The system is designed with a two-axis movement mechanism (horizontal and vertical) using a linear actuator motor controlled by Arduino Nano and ESP32. Testing was conducted on a 20 WP solar panel in Surabaya for 30 days, divided into three methods: 10 days using an LDR sensor, 10 days using an RTC, and 10 days in static conditions without a sensor. Voltage, current, and power data were measured every 30 minutes at 07.00–17.00 WIB. The test results show that the RTC method provides the highest and most stable output power, according to the sun's movement patterns in tropical areas, while the LDR method responds quickly to changes in light intensity but is less stable in changing weather. Static installation produces the lowest power. This system is able to maintain the panel orientation perpendicular to the sun's rays, thus increasing energy efficiency compared to static systems. These findings prove that dual-axis solar tracker technology, especially with an RTC sensor, is effective in dynamic maritime environments and can be a practical solution for optimizing renewable energy on ships. The most effective results using RTC sensors demonstrated the most stable and high power output, especially since the sun in tropical areas like Surabaya moves fairly consistently following a cyclical pattern. The success of this system not only increases the energy output of solar panels but also provides a practical solution for renewable energy applications in tropical climates.
