Abstract

The utilization of boiler ash from bark burning in pulp and paper industry as a conditioning agent of peat gambut soil inindustrial plantation forest has been carried out. The utilization of boiler ash as much as 5 – 10 kg/plant on peat soil,  as a vegetation media of Acacia crasicarpa conducted in the green house and the field of timber estate. Its influences on productivity and environmental aspect has been observed for 12 months vegetation age. The results showed that there were a significant effect of boiler ash utilization on growth rate and productivity of plantations. Utilization up to 10 kg/plant or 10 tons/ha/plantation period was improving the physical, chemical, and biological properties of boiler soil without detrimental effects to the environment.

Abstract

Wastewater treatment sludge cake and pulp reject from kraft pulp mill are sources of renewable energy. This study evaluated the effects of temperature on pyrolysis to convert sludge cake and pulp reject into tar and char product. Sludge cake had composition of (adb): moisture 9.08%, volatile matter 57.53%, fixed carbon 8.72% and ash 24.67% with calorific value of 2931 cal/g, while pulp reject had moisture 9.42%, volatile matter 68.16%, fixed carbon 17.00% and ash 5.42% with calorific value of 3656 cal/g. Higher volatile matter content made sludge cake and pulp reject had potency to produce tar. Pyrolysis peak was reached at 349oC for sludge cake and 300oC for pulp reject. The conversion reached 30% at 300oC and 80-90% at 400oC, with the yield of tar reached 39% for sludge cake and 47% for pulp reject. At >400oC tar formed decomposed into pyrolysis gas. Differences in material composition and pyrolysis temperature influenced composition of the tar. The char yields at 300-500oC were not difference signifantly, either for sludge cake or pulp reject. All components of the volatile matter in sludge cake and pulp reject were degraded completely in 60 minutes.  ABSTRAKPenelitian pirolisis sludge cake dan pulp reject dari pabrik pulp kraft dengan variasi suhu reaktor telah dilakukan. Sludge cake dan pulp reject adalah biomassa sisa yang dihasilkan di pabrik pulp dalam jumlah besar. Sludge cake hasil pengolahan air limbah dan pulp reject proses pembuatan pulp kimia merupakan sumber energi alternatif terbarukan potensial yang terdapat di industri pulp kraft yang saat ini belum banyak dimanfaatkan dengan baik sehingga menyebabkan isu-isu lingkungan. Penelitian ini melakukan evaluasi pengaruh suhu terhadap pirolisis untuk mengkonversi sludge cake dan pulp reject menjadi produk tar dan arang. Sludge cake mengandung zat terbang 51,34% (adb) dan karbon tetap 10,40% (adb) dengan nilai kalor 2915 kal/g (adb), sedangkan pulp reject mengandung zat terbang 68,16% (adb) dan karbon tetap 17,00% (adb) dengan nilai kalor 3656 kal/g (adb). Sebagian besar komponen zat terbang pada sludge cake maupun pulp reject habis terdegradasi pada suhu 300 – 500oC dengan waktu tinggal 60 menit. Tar hasil pirolisis sludge cake dan pulp reject mengandung senyawa-senyawa turunan benzen, phenol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), asam dan ester. Pada rentang suhu 400 – 500oC tar yang terbentuk oleh reaksi pirolisis primer terdekomposisi lebih lanjut menjadi gas oleh reaksi pirolisis sekunder sehingga menurunkan perolehan tar.Kata kunci: sludge cake, pulp reject, pirolisis, arang, zat terbang

Abstract

One of the constraints of biological waste water treatment process is the formation of sludge which can be a problem when it is disposed to the environment. A voluminous and considerable amount of sludge, a long with the limitation of landfill site are the main issues that have to be faced. Anaerobic digestion of the sludge is one way of many alternatives to manage such sludge waste.            The investigation of anaerobic digestion of sludge from waste water treatment of paper industry have been done. The experiments was designed to get the best conditions from sludge concentration variation and the amount of microbe seeding. The results of experiments evaluated in terms of biodegradation effectivity, amount of biogas production, and organic composting potential.             The results showed that the best condition is obtained from the usage of 6 g VSS/L of microbe seed, and 2.5 % concentration of sludge at more than 14 days retention time.The highest methane content at biogas is 51,5 % at the rate of 0.14 L/g VSS biogas production in 28 days retention time. The residual sludge as organic compost  characterized by 15  C/N ratio, and 32.2 meq/100 g CEC (Capacities Echange Cation). The COD of spent-liquor from sludge anaerobic digestion was reduced up to 70 %.  IntisariSalah satu kendala yang dihadapi pada pengolahan air limbah proses biologi adalah terbentuknya lumpur yang dapat menimbulkan masalah dalam pembuangan ke lingkungan. Jumlah lumpur yang cukup besar dan sifatnya yang voluminus, serta keterbatasan lahan untuk penimbunan, merupakan permasalahan yang perlu ditanggulangi. Proses digestasi anaerobik merupakan alternatif pengolahan lumpur yang berorientasi pada pemanfaatan yang bernilai tambah dan diharapkan dapat menanggulangi permasalahan yang ada.Penelitian digestasi anaerobik untuk mengolah lumpur IPAL pabrik kertas yang memproduksi kertas budaya dari bahan baku pulp virgin telah dilakukan secara batch. Ruang lingkup percobaan diarahkan untuk penentuan kondisi optimum dari variasi konsentrasi lumpur dan jumlah bibit mikroba yang digunakan. Evaluasi dilakukan terhadap efektivitas biodegradasi, produksi gas bio, serta potensi pupuk organik yang dihasilkan.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kondisi optimum diperoleh pada pemakaian bibit mikroba 6 gram VSS/L dengan kepekatan lumpur pada konsentrasi padatan 2,5% dan waktu retensi lebih dari 14 hari. Produksi gas bio dengan kadar metan tertinggi, yaitu sebesar 51,5% dicapai pada waktu retensi 28 hari dengan laju produksi gas mencapai 0,14 L/g VSS. Kualitas pupuk organik sebagai lumpur sisa yang dihasilkan mempunyai C/N ratio 15 dan nilai kapasitas tukar kation (KTK) 32,2 meq/100 g. Hasil yang diperoleh dari proses biodegradasi anaerobik ini telah dapat menurunkan kadar COD cairan sisa atau filtrat lumpur lebih dari 70%.
