Abstract

The use of banana plant sap as an incision remedy has been carried out through generations in Citatah Village, Cipatat District, West Bandung Regency, Indonesia. This study aimed to examine the ethnobotanical utilization of banana plant sap as an incision remedy. The research was conducted using the snowball sampling technique by the method of structured observation and interviews with 30 respondents. The followings were tools and materials used for the research, a set of stationery, cameras, voice recorders, and laptops. The data obtained were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that of the thirty respondents who knew the utilization of banana plant sap as wound remedy, only 60% were still using it. Parts of banana plants that were often used by the community was the banana plant shoots by 87% of the total respondents and banana leaf fronds by 13%. There was no specific type of banana used for this wound remedy. However, the type of banana most widely used by the community was ambon Banana (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum) with a percentage of 20%, kulutuk/manggala banana (Musa balbisiana) 60%, and kepok Banana (Musa paradisiaca formatypica) 20%. Based on the results of the observation and interview, there were at least four benefits of using banana sap, namely preventing infection, sticking wounds, stopping bleeding, and drying the wound. While scientifically, this banana sap can be used as the wound remedy because it contains flavonoid compounds, saponins, triterpenoids, steroids, alkaloids, ascorbic acid, and tannins.

Abstract

Mango is a type of plant that is common in tropical climates, including Indonesia. The pharmacological effects of the mango are contained in almost all parts of the plant, including the mango shoots. The mango shoots are known to benefit as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antioxidant, and anti-microbial. This encourages many parties to make functional food preparations from mango shoots without destroying the nutrient contains. This study aims to evaluated the effect of adding different types of sweeteners on the quality of mango shoot syrup. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatment groups consisting of control (T0), Stevia (T1), and Sugar (T2). Parameters observed included pH value, phytochemical screening, and antioxidant activity. The results showed that the pH values of all treatments ranged from 4.48-4.50 and were not significantly different (P=0.661). In the phytochemical screening test, all treatments showed positive results containing alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. Furthermore, based on the percentage value of the antioxidant activity, significant results were obtained (P = 0.000) with the IC50 value in the stevia treatment (8.98) which was smaller than sugar (19.14).The addition of stevia sweetener has a minimum effect in changing the nutritional content of mango shoot syrup based on the value of the antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Sustained stress is risked for the emergence of various diseases including disability to depression. Clinically, antidepressant drugs are still the main option even though they are known have side effects for users. Therefore, various types of drug plants that have the potential as natural antidepressants have begun to be used, one of them is the young leaf of mango (Mangifera indica). It is known contains various bioactive compounds, including mangiferin which is useful as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and plays a role in protecting nervous tissue. This study aimed to determine the effect of Mango’s young leaves extract of Arumanis cultivar as an antidepressant in zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to Unpredictable Chronic Stress (UCS). The method used is Completely Randomized Design (CRD) which consists of 3 treatments, namely K (Aquadest); P1 (extract concentration 10µg/mL); and P2 (extract concentration 20µg/mL). The parameters include the antioxidant activity and behavioral tests, namely new tank diving and light/dark preferences. The results showed that exposure to UCS tends to increased anxiety as indicated by a decrease in exploration on behavioral test. The data showed that the Mango’s young leaves extract induction with a concentration of 20µg/mL obtained the highest value percentage in the exploration of the upper area (36.8 s) and the preference of the bright area (90.8 s) significantly. The induction of mango’s young leaves extract has the potential as an antidepressant in zebrafish exposed to UCS with an optimal concentration of 20µg/ml.

Abstract

Situ Patengan is standing water located at the foot of Mount Patuha, Patengan Village, Rancabali District, Bandung Regency, West Java. Situ Patengan is also used for various activities including as a tourist area, fishing, and tea plantations as well as plantation business rights. The number of activities around Situ Patengan can potentially affect the quality of the waters and the organisms in it, including macrozoobenthos organisms. The presence of macrozoobenthos can also be used as a bioindicator of water quality because it is very sensitive to environmental changes. This study aims to determine the diversity, abundance, and influence of environmental factors on macrozoobenthos and to determine the water quality of Situ Patengan. The research was conducted using the purposive sampling method. Three stations are determined based on environmental factors and land use in the inlet area, forest edge, and tourism area. Based on the results of the study found 3 macrozoobenthos phyla, namely Molluscs (Pomacea canaliculata, Filopaludina javanica), Annelida (Lumbriculus sp.), and Arthropoda (Macrobracium rosenbergii, Enallagma sp., Pelocoris femoratus). Macrozoobenthos diversity ranged from 0.13-1.12 with low to moderate categories while abundance ranged from 11-91 ind/m2 and the Dominance Index in Situ Patengan ranged from 0.003-0.453 with the dominant species being Pomacea canaliculata. The Family Biotic Index shows results from 5.94 to 6.50 with the criteria that the waters at each station are not in good condition. The water quality of Situ Patengan based on macrozoobenthos bioindicators is moderate to heavily polluted. Environmental factors in this study such as depth, brightness, temperature, pH, salinity, and DO have a very low correlation to the family biotic index. Abstract

In this study, two lignan compounds were isolated from acetone extract of Phyllanthus niruri L. nirtetralin B (1) and phyllanthin (2) using several chromatographic methods followed by molecular structure elucidation mainly based on 1D and 2D of 1H and 13C NMR spectrum. The isolated compounds were tested for their antimicrobial properties against the plant pathogenic fungus, Fusarium oxysporum, using the agar plate well diffusion method. The microdilution method determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum fungicide concentration (MFC). In addition, the microconidia germination inhibition test was carried out using the agar diffusion method. As a result, compound 1 had MIC and MFC values of 4 and 16 μg/mL, respectively. While compound 2 showed the same MIC and MFC values of 16 μg/mL. Further testing on the inhibition of germination of F. oxysporum microconidia showed that compound 2 inhibited microconidia germination 100% at a concentration of 2 × MIC. In comparison, compound 1 at the same concentration was only able to inhibit germination by 29%. This study revealed that compound 2 is a potential new fungicide derived from local medicinal plants. However, further research is needed to identify the interaction mechanism between the test compound and the fungal pathogen F. oxysporum to develop new antifungal agents.
