Abstract

This research explores the strategies used by visually impaired students in learning English and the facilities they need to support their learning. Conducted at SLB-A Yapti Makassar, the study employed a qualitative descriptive approach using interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings revealed that the visually impaired students utilized various strategies including audio-based learning, peer support, and memorization. The most crucial facilities for these students were assistive technology tools such as screen readers, braille books, and a supportive learning environment. Teachers also played a significant role in adapting materials and providing multisensory instruction. The study concludes that inclusive English language learning for visually impaired students requires collaborative strategies, accessible resources, and trained educators. These elements ensure that visually impaired learners can actively participate and succeed in language acquisition, thus promoting equitable education. Further research is encouraged to evaluate these strategies in broader educational contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to explore participants’ anxiety in speaking at the EZPZ English Community. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The subjects consisted of 22 individuals, referred to as ‘participants,’ who participated in speaking sessions during FEZ activities. Data collection techniques included observation and interviews. The findings revealed two types of symptoms: psychological symptoms (nervousness, worry, difficulty concentrating, and blanking) and physiological symptoms (object touching, trembling, sweating, stammering, and avoiding eye contact). The participants experienced state anxiety and situation-specific anxiety. The contributing factors of anxiety were categorized into linguistic factors (lack of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, lack of fluency, and limited exposure to the target language) and non-linguistic factors (communication apprehension and fear of negative evaluation). To overcome anxiety, participants employed four common strategies: preparation, positive thinking, relaxation, and peer seeking, along with a newly uncovered strategy called 'calm retreat.' This study highlights that speaking anxiety is a critical concern not only in formal educational institutions but also in non-formal learning environments. Addressing this issue requires implementing suitable strategies that accommodate individual needs to help learners overcome the barriers preventing them from expressing their opinions.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of the Critical Literacy Approach (CLA) on the development of critical reading skills among EFL university students. The study was motivated by the persistent challenge that many reading classrooms in Indonesia remain focused on surface-level comprehension rather than fostering critical engagement with texts. Employing a qualitative case study design, this study involved 15 undergraduate students from three different universities in Makassar, Indonesia. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using thematic coding. Findings revealed that the implementation of CLA fostered students' critical reading achievement across six core domains: textual analysis, evaluation, contextual awareness, critical response, reflective insight, and intertextual thinking. Students demonstrated improved abilities to identify arguments, reflect on moral values, and make intertextual and real-world connections. However, variation in engagement levels indicates that some students still lack confidence and critical voice, particularly in articulating reasoned responses or understanding socio-political contexts. These findings suggest that while CLA has strong potential to deepen comprehension and promote transformative learning, its success depends on consistent pedagogical support, dialogic instruction, and contextually relevant content. The study is limited by its scope, focusing only on a small sample from Makassar. Further research is needed across diverse regions in Indonesia to generalize the findings and enhance the development of critical literacy nationwide. This study contributes to the field by offering an empirically grounded, student-centered framework for evaluating critical reading growth, highlighting the practical value of CLA in EFL contexts.
