Abstract

Scientific argumentation is a key competency for developing students' logical, critical, and systematic thinking. However, current teaching methods have not effectively fostered this skill. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a learning model that integrates a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach focused on Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) in enhancing students’ scientific argumentation abilities. The research was conducted at SMAN 8 Muaro Jambi during the 2024/2025 academic year, involving 105 grade XI phase F students selected through purposive sampling. Class XI F1 served as the experimental group, while XI F2 was the control group. A quasi-experimental design was applied using an unequal pre-test post-test control group model. Data analysis employed a One-Way ANCOVA test. The results indicate that the SSI-based PBL model had a moderate effect on students’ written scientific argumentation skills, as shown by [F(1,67) = 5.521, p = 0.022, np² = 0.076]. Abstract

Mandai is a traditional fermented food from East Kalimantan made from the peel of cempedak (Artocarpus champeden). To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to report the isolation and characterization of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from mandai. The fermentation process was carried out for 14 days using MRS Agar medium, resulting in 17 bacterial isolates, consisting of nine Gram-negative and eight Gram-positive isolates. Among them, eight Gram-positive isolates were dominant and exhibited typical LAB characteristics, including acid and gas production from glucose, negative catalase activity, non-motility, growth at 48°C but not at 16°C, and the ability to hydrolyze starch, fat, and casein. During fermentation, the pH decreased from 6.8 to 3.8, confirming active lactic acid production. These findings demonstrate that LAB play a crucial role in generating the characteristic sour taste and improving the quality of mandai. Importantly, the identified LAB isolates have potential as starter cultures to enhance the safety, consistency, and nutritional value of this traditional food.

Abstract

In the 21st century, scientific literacy is essential for students to face the complexity of global problems that require scientific understanding in decision-making. PISA data shows Indonesia's low scientific literacy. In 2018, it ranked 74th out of 79 countries with a score of 396 (40% of students only reached level 1), and in 2022, it dropped to 69th out of 81 countries with a score of 383 (34% of students at the elementary level). Less than 1% of Indonesian students reached levels 5-6 in both periods. Efforts to optimize scientific literacy were carried out by implementing a case-based learning (CBL) model integrated with the teaching at the right level (TaRL) approach. A quasi-experimental study was conducted at SMAN 1 Kota Jambi with the topic of the immune system using a non-randomized pretest-posttest control group design. The sample was selected using purposive sampling in grade XI, consisting of an experimental class (CBL-TaRL, n=36) and a control class (CBL, n=36). The results showed that the average score of the experimental class increased from 54.17 to 85.28, while the control class increased from 50.69 to 68.61. The one-way ANCOVA test showed a significant difference [F(1,69)=27.560, p<0.001, ηp²=0.28] with a large effect size. Students taught using CBL-TaRL had a higher increase in scientific literacy, especially in the aspects of analyzing scientific phenomena (36%) and designing scientific investigations (34%).
