Abstract

This study examines how bad social life conditions contribute to the development of thanatophobia in the main character, Mickey Barnes, in Bong Joon Ho’s film Mickey 17 (2025). Thanatophobia refers to the fear of death and the anxiety related to mortality. Using a qualitative descriptive method and applying Ernest Becker’s theory of death anxiety, this research analyzes selected dialogues, scenes, and character interactions that reflect social degradation, economic instability, dehumanization, and authoritarian control. The findings reveal that Mickey’s poor social environment marked by economic desperation, manipulation, violence, disposability, and loss of autonomy intensifies his awareness of mortality and reinforces his existential anxiety. The study concludes that Mickey’s fear of death does not emerge merely from repeated physical deaths, but from the social system that treats him as replaceable and strips him of human dignity.

Abstract

This article examines the role of purpose in shaping Mufasa’s resilience in Barry Jenkins’s film Mufasa: The Lion King (2024). Derived from an undergraduate thesis, this study focuses on purpose as one of the main reasons behind resilience based on Edith Grotberg’s resilience theory. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the data are taken from Mufasa’s dialogues, actions, and narrative contexts presented in the film. The findings reveal that Mufasa’s strong sense of purpose particularly his commitment to protecting others, maintaining justice, and upholding the Circle of Life functions as a central psychological force that motivates him to endure hardship, loss, and adversity. Purpose enables Mufasa not only to survive difficult circumstances but also to transform suffering into moral strength and leadership capacity. This study concludes that purpose is a foundational element of Mufasa’s resilience.

Abstract

This paper investigates how the body is objectified in Samiya At’ut’s flash fiction entitled That Summer Holiday. The story tells about the painful transition from childhood to adulthood especially in women. This idea is mostly being supported by McKinley and Hyde’s research in Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (OBCS). It is said that the objectifying of the body includes surveillance, body shame, and appearance control beliefs. Through qualitative method and explorative approach, the analysis of this paper includes how the girl has to face her body being objectified by her parents and surroundings. Living in religious circumstances, she is dictated on how to wear anything for her everyday life. In conclusion, it is clear that At’ut’s story underlines matters of how body is not belong to someone autonomously since it is always socially constructed.

Abstract

In China, Han Kitab is an example in how Chinese culture and Islam recognized each other. Ancient Chinese culture is not omitted but enriched by Islam. Confucianism and Islam are different in its each teaching but may crisscross philosophically. Both may come from different backgrounds but both teach people how to behave as individual and part of society. In Indonesia, Islam Nusantara is how Indonesian culture is understood through Islamic perspective. Islam which came later must face many ancient rituals or thoughts. It could not totally eliminate local culture but it can clear up bad aspect of local habits by teaching Islamic way of life. Both Han Kitab and Islam Nusantara shows that Islam did not come to apply such system by force, but it builds such apprehension through acculturation.

Abstract

This article exposes the significances of multimodal discourse analysis alongside with its analysis on BPJS Kesehatan’s poster regarding Joker as a DC character. In its finding, this paper finds that a poster distinctively contains various discourses within including the colors, the words, the messages, and the image as well. A poster does not stand alone or merely being seen in its purpose. Supported by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen, multimodal discourses reflect structured meanings of representations between the image and the common reality. The image of Joker is detrimental to those who suffer mental disorder. The poster may inform the covering of social health coverage, but it also shows keeps the sufferers to be undermined by society. The figure of Joker also tends to shape perceptions that mental disorder sufferers could always be as violent as that DC character. Through Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) analysis, the poster uses pictures, words, and symbols to send a message, but these can be understood in many ways by the audience. The study shows that poster does not only give information but also create new meanings through social and cultural views. The use of Joker gives a risk of creating wrong ideas about people with mental health problems, making them look dangerous. This shows the need for more care and awareness in public health communication. In conclusion, the poster and the image of Joker exposes multimodal discourses in which the reality of normal people is contrasted with the sufferers of mental disorders.

Abstract

Troloyo Cemetery, located in Trowulan, Mojokerto, East Java, is a historical burial site that exemplifies the hybridity between Islam, Hindu-Buddhist traditions, and modernity. This study explores the cemetery as a cultural third space, a concept introduced by Homi K. Bhabha (1994), where different belief systems and historical legacies intersect, negotiate, and form new identities. The research applies a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews and direct observation, focusing on the perceptions of local caretakers and community members. Findings reveal that Islamic elements are present in tombstone inscriptions, Arabic calligraphy, and pilgrimage practices associated with Syekh Jumadil Kubro, a key figure in Javanese Islamization. Simultaneously, Hindu-Buddhist influences persist through architectural structures like kijing and symbols such as Surya Majapahit, while modern features—such as tourism and infrastructure development—further shape the site's identity. Ritual practices like incense burning, flower offerings, and local cosmological concepts highlight syncretic expressions of spirituality rooted in Javanese culture. These complex layers of religiosity and symbolism challenge rigid categorizations of identity, instead revealing a dynamic cultural landscape formed through historical negotiation and continuity. The study concludes that Troloyo Cemetery functions not merely as a sacred Islamic site but as a hybrid space where cultural and religious forms co-exist and evolve, offering a deeper understanding of Indonesia's plural spiritual heritage.

Abstract

This study examines the distinctions between unabridged and abridged audiobooks within the context of narrative speech materials, with a focus on how textual completeness influences listener comprehension, engagement, and interpretive depth. Unabridged audiobooks preserve the full linguistic and stylistic features of the original text, offering a comprehensive narrative experience that supports detailed understanding and authorial intent. In contrast, abridged audiobooks condense content to prioritize brevity and accessibility, often modifying narrative structure, pacing, and emphasis. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research analyzes selected narrative recordings across both formats, incorporating listener response data and discourse analysis to evaluate differences in retention, emotional engagement, and narrative coherence. Findings suggest that while abridged versions enhance accessibility and time efficiency, they may reduce exposure to nuanced language patterns and character development. Conversely, unabridged audiobooks provide richer linguistic input but require greater listener investment. The study underscores the importance of aligning audiobook format with communicative goals in educational and applied linguistic contexts. In conclusion, by accentuating the trade-offs between completeness and concision, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how narrative speech materials can be optimized for diverse audiences and listening purposes.
