Abstract

This study explores the role of cultural appeals in shaping persuasive communication in audio and video media. Cultural appeals refer to the use of shared values, beliefs, traditions, and social norms to influence audience perception and behavior. Grounded in communication and cultural studies, this research explores how cultural references are embedded in both audio formats, such as podcasts and radio, and video formats, including advertisements and digital media content. In audio media, cultural appeals are often conveyed through language choice, storytelling, accents, and culturally specific narratives that resonate with listeners’ identities and experiences. In contrast, video media incorporate visual symbols, settings, clothing, and gestures that more explicitly represent cultural contexts and enhance audience recognition. Using a comparative analytical approach, this study evaluates selected audio and video samples to identify how cultural elements are emphasized and interpreted across different media. The findings suggest that while both formats effectively employ cultural appeals, video media provide a more immediate and vivid representation of cultural identity, whereas audio fosters deeper personal interpretation and imagination. In conclusion, this study contributes to the understanding of persuasive communication by highlighting the importance of cultural sensitivity and relevance, offering practical insights for content creators aiming to engage diverse audiences effectively.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to analyze how Islam Nusantara may contribute to contemporary character empowerment in today’s globalization era. Research methodology: This research uses textual studies in order to assert the interaction between Islam Nusantara and contemporary character empowerment. Results: The results of this study assess local values as reflected in Islam Nusantara could enrich human and cultural tolerance as the main ideas of character empowerment. Limitations: This study explains how globalization, Islam Nusantara, and contemporary character empowerment may work together today in Indonesia. Any other aspect such as different times, places, and themes should not be concerned. Contribution: Analyses in this study may enrich social and humanitarian understanding about local Islamic culture in Indonesia, horizons of globalization, and perspectives of contemporary character empowerment. Abstract

<p>This paper explores the idea of hope of possibility in Keiichi Okabe’s song entitled Weight of the World or translated as Kowareta Sekai No Uta. In the game called NieR: Automata, the song is a cry of a girl who wants to save everyone from anything bad that happened to them. She wanted to redeem her past mistakes by praying the God to help her through dark times, even though the opportunity that she got is unknown. Then, how is the hope of possibility asserted in Keiichi Okabe’s Weight of the World? Through qualitative method and explorative approach, this writing explains the possibility of hope retaining the girl to achieve her dream through the unknown probability. Supported by the theory of Adrienne M. Martin, the concept extended the orthodox view of hope with the girl’s incorporation elements in this song. This is also interrelated with the human condition, highlighting how individual aspirations contribute to collective resilience and transformation. By understanding hope as a multifaceted concept, this paper underscores the complexity of human existence and the potential for renewal within shared struggles. Abstract

This study examines how bad social life conditions contribute to the development of thanatophobia in the main character, Mickey Barnes, in Bong Joon Ho’s film Mickey 17 (2025). Thanatophobia refers to the fear of death and the anxiety related to mortality. Using a qualitative descriptive method and applying Ernest Becker’s theory of death anxiety, this research analyzes selected dialogues, scenes, and character interactions that reflect social degradation, economic instability, dehumanization, and authoritarian control. The findings reveal that Mickey’s poor social environment marked by economic desperation, manipulation, violence, disposability, and loss of autonomy intensifies his awareness of mortality and reinforces his existential anxiety. The study concludes that Mickey’s fear of death does not emerge merely from repeated physical deaths, but from the social system that treats him as replaceable and strips him of human dignity.

Abstract

This article examines the role of purpose in shaping Mufasa’s resilience in Barry Jenkins’s film Mufasa: The Lion King (2024). Derived from an undergraduate thesis, this study focuses on purpose as one of the main reasons behind resilience based on Edith Grotberg’s resilience theory. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the data are taken from Mufasa’s dialogues, actions, and narrative contexts presented in the film. The findings reveal that Mufasa’s strong sense of purpose particularly his commitment to protecting others, maintaining justice, and upholding the Circle of Life functions as a central psychological force that motivates him to endure hardship, loss, and adversity. Purpose enables Mufasa not only to survive difficult circumstances but also to transform suffering into moral strength and leadership capacity. This study concludes that purpose is a foundational element of Mufasa’s resilience.

Abstract

Representativeness bias occurs when possible similarity of an object shadows the real condition. This mental shortcut, as accentuated by Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman, is affiliated with Gambler’s Fallacy. The Phoenix is Sylvia Townsend Warner’s short story released in 1940. This story tells about a phoenix set on a display to the audience. The owner wanted to kill it since its death would show amusement of fire. The phoenix died as the fire came out and burned the place including the owner and the spectators. Then, how is representative bias illustrated on Sylvia Townsend Warner’s The Phoenix? Through qualitative methods on psychological and literary studies, this article asserts the owner’s misconception of the phoenix. The bird’s specialty was its rare exoticness and myth about being immortal. The owner was shadowed with greed by opposing the true state of nature. He then had to accept the bitter truth of death as the pyre burned all out including himself and other persons. In conclusion, the story shows how representative bias accompanied with greedy thought may ignore otherness by accentuating mere profit.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of flash card–based activities to enhance reading habits among young learners at Rumah Baca Tante Djie Surabaya. The program was designed to introduce English vocabulary and basic reading skills through interactive and engaging learning methods. Flash cards containing words, images, and simple sentences were utilized to support learners’ recognition of letters, sounds, and meanings. The activities were conducted in small groups and facilitated by a community service team from Universitas Dr. Soetomo, allowing for individualized guidance and peer interaction. Observations revealed that the use of flash cards increased learners’ motivation, participation, and confidence in reading activities. Learners showed improvement in vocabulary mastery, pronunciation, and willingness to engage in reading tasks. In conclusion, the visual and game-based nature of flash cards created a positive learning atmosphere that reduced anxiety toward English learning. The findings indicate that flash card-assisted instruction is an effective approach for fostering early reading habits and supporting literacy development among young learners in community-based learning environments.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance children’s empathy through a read-out-loud activity conducted at SDN Sawohan 2 Sidoarjo. The program was designed to address the need for socio-emotional development alongside literacy skills among children in the community. Read-out-loud sessions were implemented using carefully selected storybooks containing moral values, emotional situations, and social themes relevant to children’s daily lives. The activities involved interactive storytelling, guided discussions, and reflective questions to encourage participants to recognize emotions, understand others’ perspectives, and express their own feelings. Observations and informal feedback indicated increased engagement, improved listening skills, and greater sensitivity toward peers, as reflected in children’s responses and interactions during and after the sessions. The program demonstrates that read-out-loud activities can serve as an effective and accessible method for fostering empathy while simultaneously promoting reading interest. In conclusion, this initiative highlights the important role of community reading spaces in supporting character education and social development in children.

Abstract

This article investigates the impact of a storytelling class on enhancing learners' confidence at Rumah Baca Tante Djie Surabaya. Addressing the common challenge of public speaking anxiety among young learners, the program implemented interactive storytelling sessions as a tool for creative self-expression. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study observed learners as they practiced narrative techniques, vocal modulation, and stage presence. The findings reveal that the storytelling class significantly bolstered participants' self-assurance, enabling them to communicate more effectively and comfortably in front of an audience. By providing a supportive and non-judgmental environment, Rumah Baca Tante Djie facilitates personal growth beyond traditional literacy. This research highlights the effectiveness of storytelling in informal education and suggests that community-based initiatives play a crucial role in developing essential soft skills. In conclusion, storytelling class empowers learners to find their voices and build the confidence necessary for future academic and social success.

Abstract

This paper examines how philosophical inquiry equips individuals with the analytical tools necessary to evaluate arguments, challenge assumptions, and navigate ambiguity. In a post-truth era characterized by rapid technological advancement, information overload, and increasing sociopolitical complexity, the role of philosophical critical thinking has become more essential than ever. By fostering skills such as logical reasoning, conceptual clarity, and ethical reflection, philosophical critical thinking enables more informed decision-making in both personal and public domains. The study also explores the impact of digital media environments, where misinformation and polarized discourse often undermine rational deliberation. In this context, philosophical training serves as a countermeasure, encouraging intellectual humility and open-minded engagement with diverse perspectives. Furthermore, the paper highlights the relevance of classical and contemporary philosophical methods in addressing modern challenges, including artificial intelligence, global justice, and environmental sustainability. Through a multidisciplinary approach, it argues that integrating philosophical critical thinking into education systems is crucial for cultivating responsible and reflective citizens. In conclusion, the paper underscores that philosophy is not merely an abstract discipline but a practical necessity for sustaining democratic values and promoting thoughtful participation in an increasingly complex world.
