Abstract

This study examines the manifestation of patience as a moral virtue in Winston Groom's novel Forrest Gump through Szutta's (2020) theoretical framework of patience competence. Using qualitative methodology with descriptive analysis, this research investigates how the protagonist exemplifies patience through two core characteristics: perseverance and sincerity. The findings reveal that Forrest's perseverance manifests as sustained determination in overcoming life challenges, particularly evidenced in his shrimp business venture where he persists despite initial failures. Simultaneously, his sincerity appears through selfless actions and unconditional assistance without expectation of reward. The analysis demonstrates that patience in Forrest Gump represents not passive endurance but active competence - a strategic virtue enabling him to navigate bullying, personal loss, and social prejudice while maintaining moral integrity. The integration of perseverance and sincerity transforms his perceived intellectual limitations into extraordinary resilience, positioning patience as a transformative force in human experience. This study contributes to literary psychology by illustrating how virtue theory can illuminate character development while affirming literature's capacity to reflect complex psychological realities.

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to reveal cultural keywords from a particular cultural tradition, sambatan held by the Javanese-speaking community in Tanjung Harapan Village, Air Putih District.  Historically, the Javanese-speaking community in the area were migrants from their ancestral lands on the island of Java.  This traditional activity refers to the communal activity of preparing and building houses, between the owner and the local community. Investigation of the cultural norms can be seen from the use of grammar aspect, lexicon, and linguistic routines of a language. Those were directly related to the context of the situation (context-bound), which determined the way society speaks. The objective of this research is to explore the cultural key word entities in the discourse. Following the ethno-pragmatic perspective, the parameter of cultural discourse is the core meaning of the language used. It gives rise to variations in speech forms as the embodiment of the cultural values of each ethnic group, which in turn creates different configurations for language used. This study was designed using a synchronic-ethnographic field study. In conducting the research, the phenomenological approach was adopted. Data were obtained by following the participating observation method and in-depth interviews. The data analysis followed the ethno-pragmatic methodological tools; semantic explication for lexical semantic analysis, and cultural script for capturing the cultural norms. The results show that the three core cultural keywords; mugi-mugi, ngasih hormat and adem ayem tentrem provide the cultural norms which express hope or prayer, respect for other entities, and harmony-not contradicting others. Keywords: Ethno-pragmatics, Cultural Keywords, Cultural Discourse

Abstract

This study investigates how Medan’s urban identity is constructed and reimagined through both traditional literary works and digital reading practices. Grounded in the constructivist–interpretive paradigm, it analyzes texts by Titan Sadewo, Ika Natassa, Hasan Al Banna, and Lucya Chriz, along with digital platforms such as @beyondthepage.mdn and KleioBuku. The findings reveal that Medan’s cityscape is a dynamic cultural construct shaped by memory, modernity, and digital participation. Digital literary communities foster new modes of interaction, where readers and writers collaboratively reinterpret urban experiences beyond the printed page. By examining these intersections, the study expands Indonesian urban literary discourse and highlights the transformative role of digital media in shaping contemporary representations of place and identity.

Abstract

This study investigates how the speech acts of request, refusal, and apology are realized across two culturally and linguistically distinct languages: English and Mandarin. Grounded in speech act theory and contemporary approaches to politeness and facework, the research examines how interactional norms, sociocultural values, and contextual expectations shape speakers’ pragmatic choices. While existing scholarship has extensively analyzed these speech acts individually, cross-cultural studies that integrate all three within a unified comparative framework remain limited. To address this gap, the present study employs a qualitative, discourse-based methodology incorporating naturally occurring spoken interactions, documentary and digital media data, and contextual commentaries. Conversation Analysis (CA) and thematic analysis are used to explore linguistic strategies, sequential organization, and culturally embedded meanings.Findings reveal systematic contrasts in directness, mitigation, sequencing, and face-management orientations. English speakers tend to favor explicit forms, efficient sequencing, and concise justification, reflecting low-context communication norms. Mandarin speakers employ greater indirectness, elaborate mitigation, relational alignment, and self-effacement, consistent with high-context communication and face-sensitive cultural orientations. However, patterns also vary by setting, social distance, power relations, and communicative medium, demonstrating that pragmatic behavior is shaped by both cultural tendencies and situational constraints. The study contributes to cross-cultural pragmatics by offering a comparative, multi-layered account of how requests, refusals, and apologies are constructed and negotiated in English and Mandarin. The findings have implications for intercultural communication, language pedagogy, and the development of pragmatic competence among speakers navigating bilingual or multilingual environments.

Abstract

Natural yeast is a mixture of flour, water, and or other components fermented with a natural starter containing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeast. The mixture is used as a baking agent in the production of sweet bread. The natural yeast in this study used fermented sweet orange soaking water as the yeast. Natural yeast can change the availability of fiber fraction, protein, and increase mineral content in flour. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding instant yeast and natural yeast on the quality and characteristics of sweet bread. The experiment consisted of the independent variables of instant yeast and natural yeast with concentrations of 10%, 15%, 20% instant yeast and 10%, 15%, 20% natural yeast. The observation parameters used included microbial contamination, moisture content, ash, organoleptic. The results showed that the treatment of adding different proportions of instant yeast and natural yeast had a significant effect on moisture content with the lowest and highest ranges of 18.5-35% instant yeast and 21.5-37.5% natural yeast (wet basis), ash content in instant yeast with a range of 0.84-1.50%, and in natural yeast with a range of 0.93-1.50%. Then in microbial contamination with the two treatments there are the same results which meet the SNI.

Abstract

Abstract. Gender issues have remained a hot issue owing to various influencing factors, including gender overlap and social inequality. Gender is a social sex reconstructed by society for both men and women. The gender difference stereotypes have given rise to gender injustice detrimental to women. The presence of the concept of existential feminism initiated by Simone De Beauvoir is a bright spot and hope for all women, especially those in patriarchal system communities. The purpose of this research is to uncover the traditional paradigm that women are cultural products and their independence is delimited. This is not in accordance with the concept of human rights which basically states that every human being has the same rights in carrying out life. So it is hoped that this paper can be used as a reference to eliminate the marginalization of women. The research is carried out using a qualitative descriptive design with phenomenological method to explore or photograph social situations thoroughly, broadly and deeply and also supported by the theory of sociology of literature, the description of social reality in literary works. The data collection procedures and the data analysis are done systematically based on the existing theories of qualitative research method. The results of the research show that the protagonist implements the existential feminist concept through the ability to work, being intellectual and responsible.  Throughout the research it is proved that existential feminism still exists to explore the marginalization of woman, summed up with a text that women are independent beings. Keywords: Existential Feminism, Intellect, Profession, Responsibility

Abstract

This study explores deictic expressions in the Sigale-Gale story, a traditional Batak Toba folklore, using a pragmatic approach. Deictic expressions are context-dependent linguistic elements that indicate participants, time, place, discourse, or social relationships, and they play a crucial role in constructing meaning in narrative texts. The study aims to identify and analyze the types of deixis used in the story and to explain their functions in relation to context and culture. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with the story serving as the primary data source. Data were collected through the documentation method and analyzed using classification based on five deixis categories: person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis. The findings reveal that person deixis is the most frequently used type, particularly third-person pronouns, reflecting the narrative focus on characters and events. Place and time deixis are also significant, helping to establish spatial and temporal frameworks that guide readers’ understanding of the story. Discourse and social deixis, though less frequent, contribute to textual coherence and convey cultural norms, such as social hierarchy and kinship relations. Overall, the analysis demonstrates that deictic expressions in the Sigale-Gale story function not only as linguistic devices but also as tools for cultural representation and narrative cohesion. This study highlights the importance of pragmatic analysis in traditional folklore, offering insights into how context and culture interact in storytelling. The results may serve as a reference for further research on deixis in other local narratives.

Abstract

Teaching of narrative writing requires instructional approaches that promote creativity and higher-order thinking. The treffinger learning model, which consists of Basic Tools, Practice with Process, and Working with Real Problems, offers a structured framework for developing students’ creative thinking in writing. This study investigated the effect of the Treffinger Learning Model on students’ narrative writing skills. A quasi-experimental design was employed involving two eighth-grade classes (N = 52) from a junior high school, assigned as an experimental group and a control group. Data were collected through pretest and posttest writing assessments in the form of essay tasks. The results showed that students’ initial writing ability was relatively low, with mean pretest scores of 34.42 (experimental) and 29.12 (control). Following the intervention, the experimental group demonstrated a substantially higher improvement, achieving a mean posttest score of 84.27, compared to 71.04 in the control group. The findings indicate that the Treffinger Learning Model contributes positively to the development of students’ narrative writing skills. This study highlights the pedagogical value of creativity-based learning models in English language classrooms.
