Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze how the interfaith community Jakatarub (Jaringan Kerja Antarumat Beragama) constructs a narrative of religious tolerance through mediatization strategies on the Instagram platform, as well as how audiences respond to these narratives. This research is significant given the shift of interfaith dialogue traditions from physical spaces to digital spaces, which opens new opportunities while also presenting challenges for strengthening social cohesion in Indonesia. Methodology: Using a qualitative approach with the netnography method, this study focuses on the Instagram account @jakatarub_bdg by examining 128 Feed and Reels posts published between January and December 2024, along with audience comments analyzed using Kozinets’ Cyber Media Analysis (CMA) framework. Findings: The findings reveal that the constructed tolerance narrative encompasses three main themes: interfaith dialogue (41%), social harmony (38%), and religious tolerance (21%). The mediatization strategies applied include media as conduits, media as language, and media as environment, which synergistically expand the reach of messages and create participatory spaces for audiences. Audience responses were predominantly positive and reflective, although some critical feedback sparked deeper discussions on the realities of tolerance at the local level. Research Implications: The implications of this study affirm the potential of social media as an effective medium for promoting interfaith dialogue, while highlighting the need for content moderation policies and adaptive communication strategies to anticipate risks of polarization and the reproduction of stereotypes. Originality/Value: The originality of this research lies in its integration of Hjarvard’s and Meyrowitz’s mediatization theory with a netnographic approach to a grassroots interfaith community in Indonesia—a focus that has been rarely explored in previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore how the Instagram account @walmajelena functions as a digital space for expressing the religiosity of Catholic women and to examine how its content shapes the followers’ perspectives, understanding, and spiritual experiences in the digital sphere. Methodology: This study uses a qualitative approach within a sociological and media studies framework with descriptive-analytical methods. Data were collected through digital observation and analysis of content and responses from followers of the account. Findings: The findings reveal that @walmajelena serves as a warm, reflective, and contextual medium of faith expression for Catholic women. Through four major themes—prayer, worship attire, Catholic identity, and faith education—the account constructs a dynamic and participatory spiritual space relevant to younger generations. Interaction between the account owner and her followers illustrates a collective process of religious identity construction, turning social media into a site for the negotiation, affirmation, and internalization of evolving faith values. Research Implications: These findings demonstrate that social media can act as an interactive and dialogical sacred space that empowers lay Catholic women to articulate faith beyond institutional boundaries. The study highlights the need for digital–theological literacy and pastoral accompaniment to ensure that digital evangelization remains both spiritually grounded and contextually relevant. Originality/Value: This research offers an original contribution by applying Berger and Luckmann’s social construction theory to explain how religious identity is dynamically shaped through digital interaction. It also presents a new understanding of female digital religiosity, showing how personal faith narratives evolve into collective expressions of Catholic identity within Indonesia’s plural digital culture.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the concept of Islamic philanthropy from the perspective of Max Scheler's axiology and how the National Zakat Agency can practice Islamic philanthropic values in Indonesia. The research process uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach. The results and discussion show that the concept of Islamic philanthropy in the context of Baznas through its programs, axiologically falls into the category of spiritual and religious value hierarchies from Max Scheler's perspective. The conclusion drawn from the research is that the spirit of Islamic philanthropy has a spiritual and religious basis axiologically, especially through the implementation of Baznas programs in the distribution of zakat, infaq, and shadaqah funds. Recommendations for further research are that a more elaborate method is needed to conduct more detailed research on the strategies applied by Baznas in promoting Islamic philanthropy. This is necessary because this research is limited to only one qualitative approach.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of integrating religious values and the use of religious symbols in marketing Sharia-compliant properties on consumer purchase decisions. Employing a netnographic method, this analysis observes consumer interactions on the Instagram account @shariagreenland, revealing how spiritual resonance and the commodification of religious symbols affect consumer preferences and behavior in the property sector. The findings reveal that religious symbols are strategically used in the marketing of Sharia-compliant properties, not only to support religious identity but also as a tool to create added value in consumer perception. These symbols are integrated into various marketing aspects, from property branding using the term “Islamic Housing”, to payment systems and facilities that comply with Islamic law, indicating the occurrence of religious commodification. Furthermore, this research identifies marketing strategies that commodify religious symbols as a major differentiating factor influencing consumer interest. The results of this study provide important insights for property developers in formulating effective marketing strategies, emphasizing the need for an authentic and transparent approach in integrating religious values into their product offerings. These findings contribute to the literature on consumer behavior in the context of Sharia-compliant properties and highlight broader social and cultural dynamics surrounding the commodification of religion in contemporary marketing.
