Abstract

This ethnographic study explores how millennial Muslims in Makassar construct their understanding and practice of Sharia-compliant investment through social processes and community interactions. Using participant observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions with 32 participants across five investment communities, the research reveals three distinct pathways of knowledge construction: scholarly consultation, peer learning, and personal interpretation. The findings demonstrate that millennial Muslim investors actively negotiate religious principles with contemporary financial realities through collective deliberation processes, creating hybrid forms of "neo-Islamic finance" that integrate traditional religious compliance with environmental and social responsibility concerns. Technology plays a crucial role in facilitating communal investment practices, enabling participants to coordinate decisions through digital platforms while maintaining reverence for traditional religious authority. The study reveals that investment communities serve as sites of identity formation where participants construct modern Muslim professional identities that successfully integrate faith-based principles with material prosperity. The collective decision-making processes challenge the individualistic assumptions underlying conventional financial theory, demonstrating how peer networks serve as knowledge brokers in transforming abstract religious principles into practical investment criteria. These communities develop sophisticated screening practices and innovative investment structures, including informal investment pools that address both religious requirements and economic constraints. The research contributes to the understanding of contemporary Islamic finance practices and provides insights for developing culturally sensitive financial products and services tailored to millennial Muslim investors.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between Islamic financial literacy and halal investment preferences among Muslim communities in Makassar City using a grounded theory approach. Through in-depth interviews with 18 informants from various backgrounds, the research identifies three categories of Islamic financial literacy levels: Basic Literacy (7 informants), Intermediate Literacy (8 informants), and Advanced Literacy (3 informants). The findings reveal a strong correlation between literacy levels and investment diversification, showing a paradigmatic transformation from "avoiding haram" at the basic level to "optimizing halal" at the advanced level. Contextual factors such as Bugis-Makassar culture with the concept of "siri na pesse", generational influences, and accessibility of Islamic financial infrastructure play important roles in shaping literacy patterns and investment preferences. The research generates emergent concepts such as "collective literacy", "situational literacy", and "ripple effects" that demonstrate how Islamic financial knowledge transmission occurs through social-communal networks. The research results contribute theoretically to the development of Islamic economics and provide practical insights for more effective Islamic financial education and inclusion strategies.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the relationship between financial literacy and cryptocurrency investment decision-making among university students in Makassar, Indonesia. Using interpretive phenomenological analysis, 23 semi-structured interviews were conducted across three major universities to understand how students navigate the intersection of traditional financial knowledge and digital asset investments. The findings reveal four distinct decision-making pathways: impulse-driven decisions influenced by social media, peer-influenced investments, analytical approaches, and cautious observation. Despite 74% of participants demonstrating basic traditional financial literacy, only 35% possessed comprehensive financial planning knowledge, while 83% could articulate blockchain concepts but lacked sophisticated risk assessment skills. Social networks, particularly family attitudes and peer influence, emerged as dominant factors shaping investment behaviors, with 65% learning about cryptocurrencies through peer recommendations. The study reveals that initial investment decisions typically occurred within 24-48 hours of first exposure, driven by fear of missing out (FOMO). These findings suggest that effective financial education must address social influences and emotional factors beyond traditional financial knowledge to support informed cryptocurrency investment decisions among young investors.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine and analyze the influence of financial ratios on profit changes in telecommunications companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during the 2019–2023 period. The financial ratios used in this study encompass four main groups: liquidity ratios, solvency ratios, activity ratios, and profitability ratios. This study employed a quantitative approach with an associative nature because it attempted to examine the relationship and influence between these financial variables on profit changes. The population in this study comprised all telecommunications companies listed on the IDX, while the sample selection was conducted using a purposive sampling technique with specific criteria, resulting in 15 eligible companies. The research data were then analyzed using panel data regression using EViews 12 software, with the best model selected being the Random Effect Model (REM). The results showed that simultaneously, liquidity, solvency, activity, and profitability ratios significantly influenced profit changes, thus concluding that the company's overall financial performance plays a significant role in determining the dynamics of profit generated. However, partial test results showed that the influence of each ratio was different. The solvency ratio has a significant negative effect on profit changes, indicating that the higher a company's debt level, the greater the risk of profit decline. Conversely, the profitability ratio has a significant positive effect, confirming that a company's ability to generate net profit is a major factor in increasing profit changes. Meanwhile, the liquidity ratio and activity ratio were not shown to have a significant effect on profit changes, indicating that short-term liquidity and operational efficiency are not sufficient to be the primary determinants in driving profit changes in the telecommunications sector.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of liquidity, as represented by the Current Ratio (CR), and solvency, as measured by the Debt to Asset Ratio (DAR), on profitability, proxied by Return on Assets (ROA), in the case of PT Astra International Tbk during the 2015–2023 period. Employing a quantitative approach with a descriptive method, this research analyzes secondary data sourced from the company’s quarterly financial reports. Multiple linear regression analysis is used to examine both the individual and combined effects of liquidity and solvency on profitability. The findings reveal that CR has a negative and statistically significant effect on ROA, indicating that higher liquidity may correspond to lower profitability. This suggests that excessive current assets could reflect underutilized resources that are not optimally contributing to income generation. Similarly, DAR also demonstrates a negative and significant relationship with ROA, implying that higher reliance on debt may reduce profitability due to the burden of interest and other financial obligations. Collectively, liquidity and solvency are shown to significantly influence profitability. These results highlight the importance of maintaining a strategic balance between current assets and debt to achieve sustainable financial performance. This study is limited to a specific period and a single company within the automotive and diversified industry, which may affect the generalizability of the conclusions. Future research is encouraged to explore additional financial indicators or conduct comparative studies across sectors to enhance the breadth and Uapplicability of the findings

Abstract

*Penulis korespondensi Abstract Low levels of financial literacy remain a challenge in many regions of Indonesia, including Jeneponto Regency, South Sulawesi. This community service program aimed to improve the basic understanding and skills of local communities in managing personal finances through contextual and participatory financial literacy socialization and training. The implementation methods included problem identification, material preparation, direct training, simple mentoring, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test. The results indicated a significant improvement in participants’ financial knowledge, behavioral changes toward wiser financial management, and increased access to formal financial services such as savings accounts. The main challenges encountered were limited digital literacy and the persistence of traditional financial management habits within the community. This activity demonstrates that simple yet contextual educational approaches can create a tangible impact on the financial empowerment of rural communities. Similar programs are recommended to be further developed on a sustainable basis with cross-sectoral support, particularly from local governments, financial institutions, universities, and community organizations. Cross-sectoral synergy is expected to expand program outreach, strengthen continuous mentoring, and create an inclusive and resilient financial literacy ecosystem to support the welfare of rural communities.
