Abstract

Renal fibrosis (RF) is a severe kidney pathology defined by myofibroblast anomalies that create extracellular material on the interstitial and glomerular surfaces. The current therapy for treating renal disease has not achieved excellent results. A new theory about applying umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSC) to treat renal fibrosis and other fibrosis-affected organs has been developed. This review aims to elucidate the role of UC-MSC in the therapy of renal fibrosis and summarize the numerous biological mechanisms involved. A search was undertaken using PubMed and Google Scholar from 2003 to 2021 to gather information regarding the Potential therapy with UC-MSC in renal fibrosis. Multiple studies on rat models of renal fibrosis have demonstrated a considerable improvement in fibrotic kidneys following UC-MSC treatment. It can transfer functional proteins and genetic information to recipient cells that suppress the fibrosis process. UC-MSC is considered a superior approach to MSC for therapeutic purposes due to its straightforward collection, minimum immunogenicity, and solid paracrine potency. The UC-MSC cellular treatment for renal impairment is a feasible option in the future.

Abstract

HIGHLIGHTS Stem cell technology has various roles in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, including fertility study as well as tissue damage repair. Safety profile of stem cells technology use in human still need to be assessed.   ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to review the role of stem cells in obstetrics and gynecology. Materials and Methods: This review used several databases, the PubMed, Wiley Online Library, and ScienceDirect to search open access original and review articles in English related to stem cells, obstetrics, and gynecology in the last 10 years. The results were analyzed qualitatively. Results: Out of 1,016 records identified through database searching, fifteen articles were eligible for review. Several articles reported the role of stem cells in endometrium repair. Stem cell can also increase endometrial thickness and increase the likelihood of pregnancy. In the field of gynecology, stem cells can be used as potential treatment for stress urinary incontinence and anal incontinence. Despite of all those abilities, stem cells might have errors, such as chromosomal abnormalities, epigenetic and genetic defect, which could potentially turn the stem cells into tumor initiating cells (TICs), thus can contribute to ectopic growth of endometrium (endometriosis), leiomyoma, leiomyosarcomas, and adeno-myosis. Conclusion: Stem cell technology has various roles in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, including fertility study as well as tissue damage repair. However, in-depth research to ensure the safety profile of stem cells technology use in human is necessary.

Abstract

Neurological complications occur in almost 60% of patients with advanced CKD and affect the nervous system at all levels, both central and peripheral. Peripheral neuropathy in CKD is usually asymptomatic until renal function is below 15%, and glomerular filtration is less than 10-12 ml/min. This study seeks to identify and characterize peripheral neuropathy in patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study with the research sample comprising chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis at Dr. Mohommad Hoesin Palembang Hospital. The distribution of research subjects based on the Neuropathy Symptom Score (NSS) revealed that 65.7% fell into the mild neuropathy category, based on an NSS of 3-4. According to the electrophysiology results, 82.9% of patients exhibited peripheral neuropathy, while 17.1% showed normal NCS results. Sensory motor neuropathy accounted for 51.4%, including 71.5% with axonal neuropathy, 11.4% with axonal-demyelinating lesions, and no demyelinating lesions. The high prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in CKD patients identified through electrophysiological examination (ENMG) emphasizes the importance of nerve conduction examination as a diagnostic tool for peripheral neuropathy in CKD patients. This can aid in determining the progression of peripheral neuropathy in CKD patients, allowing for appropriate management and prevention of disability complications to enhance the quality of life for these individuals.

Abstract

Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a widespread condition that impacts quality of life and poses significant health care challenges. Recent research shows that dietary factors, especially the consumption of high glycemic index (GI) foods, play an important role in exacerbating musculoskeletal pain through metabolic and inflammatory pathways. High GI foods cause a rapid spike in blood glucose, which causes increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting in oxidative stress. Oxidative stress disrupts normal cellular function, increases the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and exacerbates chronic inflammation, a major driver of musculoskeletal pain. This review discusses the mechanisms by which high GI foods increase oxidative stress and contribute to the onset and persistence of chronic musculoskeletal pain and discusses oxidative damage increasing degradation of musculoskeletal tissue, delaying recovery, and worsening pain perception. Previous studies linking high GI diets to increased oxidative stress and the incidence of musculoskeletal pain provide evidence of the potential for dietary modification as a non-invasive therapeutic strategy. In conclusion, reducing foods with a high glycemic index and adopting a diet rich in antioxidants and low glycemic index to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation is very necessary. Understanding the impact of diet on oxidative stress offers a promising avenue for the prevention and treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain. Further research is needed to strengthen this association and develop targeted dietary interventions for CMP patients.

Abstract

Water pollution is a pressing environmental issue that adversely affects aquatic ecosystems and the usability of water resources. The Batang Masumai River, located in Merangin Regency, Jambi Province, is an essential water source for local communities but faces escalating pollution challenges due to industrial, agricultural, and residential activities. This study analyzes the pollution levels of the Batang Masumai River by assessing seven key parameters: temperature, pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). A quantitative observational approach was employed, utilizing secondary data collected from 2021 to 2024. The results were evaluated against Class II water quality standards as stipulated in Government Regulation Number 22 of 2021. The findings indicate that while parameters such as temperature and pH generally adhered to acceptable standards, others, notably TSS, BOD, and COD, frequently exceeded the regulatory limits, particularly in 2021. This suggests substantial pollution stemming from untreated wastewater and soil erosion. Although improvements were observed in subsequent years, several parameters remained problematic, posing ongoing risks to aquatic ecosystems and water resource sustainability. These findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced wastewater treatment systems, stricter enforcement of environmental regulations, and the adoption of sustainable watershed management practices to restore and safeguard the ecological health of the river.

Abstract

There is a lot of research to support that cancer stem cell attract normal stem cell. The tendency of tumor cells to attract stem cells then becomes the basis for the use of stem cells in breast cancer theraphy. When neural stem cell applied as a carrier, it will make the amount, timing, and location of viral oncolytic or drug release can be precisely controlled. Finally, this situation will increase the effectiveness of breast cancer therapy and reduce side effects. This is a brief review about potency of stem cell as breast cancer treatment. This article aim to increased our knowledge about the potency of stem cell as breast cancer treatment. The tendency of tumor cells to attract stem cells then becomes the basis for the use of stem cells as enzyme/prodrug theraphy, secreted agent, viral oncolytic carrier or nanoparticle (drug) carrier which tends to be more localized around the tumor. When neural stem cell applied as a carrier, it will make the location, amount and timing of drug release or viral oncolytic can be precisely controlled.

Abstract

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by widespread inflammation and diverse clinical manifestations. The systemic inflammatory immune index (SII), calculated as platelet count * neutrophil count/lymphocyte count, has emerged as a potential marker of systemic inflammation in various conditions. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between SII and disease activity in SLE patients. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 60 SLE patients diagnosed according to the 2019 EULAR/ACR classification criteria. Demographic and clinical data were collected, and disease activity was assessed using the Mexican Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (MEX-SLEDAI). Blood samples were analyzed to determine SII values. Statistical analysis included Spearman's correlation to assess the relationship between SII and MEX-SLEDAI scores. Results: The study population predominantly consisted of women (98.3%), with a median age of 29 years. A strong positive correlation was observed between SII and MEX-SLEDAI scores (r = 0.931, p < 0.001). Patients with higher SII values exhibited significantly greater disease activity. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that SII is a promising predictor of disease activity in SLE patients. This readily available index may aid clinicians in assessing disease severity and tailoring treatment strategies. Further research is warranted to validate these findings and explore the utility of SII in monitoring disease progression and treatment response.

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders include acute and chronic conditions affecting the muscles, bones, joints, and supporting structures in the neck, back, and limbs, posing significant challenges across all age groups. Approximately 30% of cases occur in adolescents and individuals in their productive years, not just in the elderly. These disorders lead to substantial socioeconomic and health burdens. Previous research indicates that dietary patterns play a critical role in the onset and progression of these conditions. A persistent high-glycemic index (GI) diet is associated with systemic inflammation, metabolic dysregulation, and musculoskeletal health. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of existing literature to summarize and identify the potential relationship between high-GI diets and the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Articles were collected using search engines such as PubMed, Medscape, and ScienceDirect, focusing on publications from 2013 to 2024. The findings emphasize the importance of dietary interventions as modifiable risk factors for preventing and managing musculoskeletal disorders, particularly in at-risk populations. Further studies are needed to develop dietary strategies to reduce the global burden of musculoskeletal disorders effectively.
