Abstract

A numerical modeling has been built for the relationship between rainfall in the equatorial region of Sumatra to the ENSO and IOD phenomena by taking data from 1991 to 2020 at three stations located in the western region of Sumatra Island, namely SM Japura, SM Minangkabau and SM Hang Nadim. The method used in this study is the method of correlation and linear regression on the Niño3.4 Index variable and the Dipole Mode Index on the amount of rainfall. The data visualization process is carried out with the output in the form of plots and graphs with Goole Colab coding. The resulting graph is a graph of the ENSO and IOD phenomena, as well as a regression graph between The Niño3.4, DMI and the amount of rainfall per month. This study was conducted with the aim of knowing how much influence the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variable represented by the Niño3.4 Index and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) represented by DMI had on rainfall in the equatorial region in the 1991 – 2020 period and to see the trend of significance between the two towards the equatorial region on the island of Sumatra. Rainfall in Indonesia's equatorial region tends to be influenced by IOD compared to ENSO. The combination of the two at the same time can cause a significant change in the amount of rainfall. La-Niña and negative IOD occurred in 1992, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2016. The average rainy day index (SDII) tended to decrease in Japura Island in 1996, 2005, 2011, 2016 , at SM Minangkabau in 1992, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2016 and at SM Hang Nadim in 1996, 1999 and 2008. Meanwhile the longest series of wet days tended to decrease in SM Japura in 1992, 1996, 1999, 2005, in SM Minangkabau in 1992, 1996, 2005, 2008, and in SM Hang Nadim in 1992, 2000, 2005, 2008 and 2011. The longest series of dry days tended to increase in SM Japura in 1996, 2011, in SM Minangkabau in 1996, 2000, 2011, and at SM Hang Nadim in 1996.

Abstract

A valid and practical STEM-based introduction to quantum physics module has been successfully developed. The module development uses a modified Rowntree development model consisting of three stages: the planning stage, the development stage, and the evaluation stage. Tessmer's formative evaluation was carried out at the evaluation stage, including self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one evaluation, and small group evaluation. Data collection techniques used walkthrough data and questionnaire data. The results of the expert review show that the EVR value from the experts is 88.1%. In the one-to-one evaluation stage, the HEOS value from student responses to the use of this module is 88.6% (efficient type). The module was revised into prototype two and re-tested apart from these two stages. In the small group evaluation trial, the HEOS score from student responses using this module is 93.0%. Thus, based on the study results, it is concluded that the developed module (teaching material) is valid and practical.

Abstract

Critical thinking and concept mastery is an important ability for every student to have. So, educators need to get information about the level of skills possessed by student. This study aims to describe the initial level of critical thinking skills and mastery of students' concepts, as well as the relationship between critical thinking skills and mastery of students' concepts on earth structure material in class VIII at SMP Negeri 2 Namang. The methodology used in the research is descriptive quantitative, using a critical thinking ability test and concept mastery test, and qualitative, using interviews. Students' critical thinking and concept mastery tests showed an average score of 43.78 and 55.94, with a fairly low category. The average value of the inference indicator was 25.97, and the indicator of making further explanations was 37.01. Both are the lowest indicators that still need to be improved. In contrast, the average value of the strategy and tactics indicator is 73.95, which is in the high category. The significance value obtained is <0.001, which indicates that there is a strong, significant, and directly proportional relationship between critical thinking skills and concept mastery, with a correlation coefficient value of 0.803. The results of the interview show the low enthusiasm of students in learning the structure of the earth due to the lack of a variety of media used and test questions that are not used to being done.

Abstract

This  research was conducted in North Sumatra, namely at Iskandar Muda, Malikussaleh and Deli Serdang stations in the period 1885 to 2019. The purpose of the study was to analyze seasonal and interannual rainfall patterns. The method used is Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and correlation between rainfall, sea surface temperature and wind. The results of the study showed that the rainfall pattern at Iskandar Muda, Malikussaleh and Deli Serdang stations had two peaks of rainfall. The peak rainfall of the three stations occurs in May and the second peak has differences between Deli Serdang and Iskandar Muda and Malikussaleh stations. Where the peaks of high periodization are only in the 6-month and 12-month periods. There is also a peak periodogram from each station seen in 18-30 months. Rainfall periodogram analysis shows the magnitude of data frequency for each phase cycle and its frequency. The correlation between rainfall, wind and sea surface temperature (SST) at the three stations has a different pattern. At Deli Serdang station, there is an influence of ENSO and IOD, while at Iskandar Muda and Malikussaleh stations there is no influence of ENSO and IOD. Then in the September, October, November (SON) season at the three stations there is no visible influence of ENSO and IOD.

Abstract

As is known, the impact caused by El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) can reach extreme levels, especially rainfall in Indonesia. So, updating information on events and cycles of these phenomena is essential. Using Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data spanning the previous 84 years (1940–2023) from ERA5, we examined Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (SSTA), which serve as a predictive tool for ENSO and IOD events. Apart from that, in this research, SSTA variance analysis was also carried out using Wavelet. The analysis results show several Positive IOD-Like events (1943, 1944, 1977, 1996) and Negative IOD-Like (1985, 1992, 2016). Apart from that, the results of this research also show that El Niño in 2002/03 coincided with Negative IOD in 2002. The results of Wavelet analysis show that the SSTA DMI variance experienced increased activity in the periods 1940-1968, 1969-1991, and 1992-2023. The Wavelet analysis also shows that ENSO activity increased in 1970-2000 and decreased again in 2000-2023.

Abstract

This paper aims to stimulate a teaching and learning reflection for Indonesian IGCSE physics classrooms through a recent booming and recreational game of Newtonian yoyo called lato-lato. As physics is one of the critical and complex subjects in secondary school, it establishes a struggle for students to comprehend the concept of physics. The 21st-century physics education learning aims to promote high-end reasoning and deep understanding. Contextual physic learning will support this mission to reach maximum attainment for students. Physics through contextual knowledge will be more feasible for students. The recent phenomenon of lato-lato encounters a new interest for students. Lato-lato as a demonstrator and contextual example will be a resourceful material for several concepts of Newtonian mechanics, for instance: collision and energy. In addition, lato-lato may provide an advanced idea of circular motion, momentum, and impulse, oscillation. Lato-lato involvement may bring a chance for IGCSE curriculum adjustment in mechanics topics to become a significant pre-learning process. By using the adjusted curriculum, students are more likely to reach their maximum attainment and conceptual understanding of mechanics because students feel interested and encouraged to learn through a problem-solving and real-world setup. Lato-lato (Newtonian Yoyo) phenomenon may solve students’ learning difficulties in IGCSE physics through a conceptual phenomenon.
