Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the characteristics of the climate and its relationship to the haze disaster in the city of Palembang by utilizing data from the BMKG observation station, namely the Palembang Climatology Station and the Sultan Mahmud Baharudin II Meteorological Station, from 1981 to 2020. The research method used is secondary data research with a quantitative approach. The analysis used is according to the rules of the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and indices ETCCDI. Trend analysis was carried out using the non-parametric Mankendal statistical and sens tests. The indices that experienced a significant trend were the temperature index, which indicates that the temperature in Palembang is increasing from time to time. The relationship between dry days has a correlation level of >0.9. This shows a close relationship between haze disasters and days without rain (CDD). The months prone to smog occur in June, July, August and September (JJAS).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide predictions of climate conditions and trend of temperature rise in the city of Palembang in the 21st century. The BMKG station data used, namely SK Palembang and SM SMB II from the 2000-2020 period were analyzed based on the agreement of the Expert Team for Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI). ). Analysis using google colab shows that rainfall in the city of Palembang has a fairly high variability and a decrease in the number of rainy days that occur in the city of Palembang with the trend of air temperature, namely TMAXmean and TMINmean, has increased significantly by 2.40C for 50 years. Based on the correlation analysis between rainfall and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with Google Colab, a negative relationship was found. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index used is the Niño 3.4 index. The study concluded that although the geographical location of Palembang city is located in the Asian Monsoon area, the ENSO phenomenon does not significantly affect rainfall variability in Palembang city.

Abstract

El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)` are events where the phenomenon of rising and falling sea surface temperatures becomes unnatural. Stronger events where the sea surface temperature anomaly becomes large, then this disrupts local fish and bird populations. The ENSO and IOD phenomena also affect rainfall in several parts of Indonesia. This study analyzed the effect of ENSO and IOD phenomena on rainfall in South Sumatra Province from 1981 to 2020 and the correlation between Consecutive Dry Days (CDD) and Rainfall in South Sumatra Province for the last 40 years. ENSO data and IOD data were analyzed against rainfall data analyzed using a simple linear regression method and associated with CDD in South Sumatra Province with the correlation method. In addition, a correlation analysis was also carried out between the Niño 3.4 index and the Dipole Mode Index (DMI) with rainfall at two stations, namely the Palembang Climatology Station and the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Meteorological Station to determine how much influence the ENSO and IOD phenomena had on rainfall in the Sumatra Province. South. The results of the analysis show that the effect of ENSO and IOD on rainfall at each station is generally not significant. The state of rainfall in the Province of South Sumatra for the last 40 years is almost not influenced by El Nio and La Nia. This is presumably due to the location of the South Sumatra Region which is in the Munsonal area. Monsoon areas are characterized by a unimodial type of rainfall (one peak of the rainy season) where in June, July and August the dry season occurs, while December, January and February are the wet months. The remaining six months is a transitional or transitional period (three months of transition from dry season to rainy season and three months of transition from rainy season to dry season).

Abstract

The Indonesian region is affected by the monsoon system, which leads to a rainy season in December-March and a dry season in June-September. Global warming caused by human activities is increasing the risk of extreme climate events like floods, droughts, etc. The study aims to analyze the trends and correlations of extreme temperatures in the South Sumatra coastal area and its relationship with the DMI and Nino 3.4 indices. The four-stage research methodology includes data collection, extreme temperature index calculation, trend detection and correlation analysis with ENSO. Results indicate that the region has seen a rise in temperature, with hot day/night temperatures increasing by 0.26-0.29°C per decade and cold day/night temperatures by 2-3°C per 100-1000 years. A strong correlation was found between the DMI index and daily maximum/minimum temperatures, as well as between the Nino 3.4 index and the Diurnal Temperature Range (DTR). The study projects that nighttime temperatures will increase faster than daytime temperatures in the future, with a proportional correlation between the Nino 3.4 index and extreme temperatures

Abstract

Indonesia has two seasons and witnesses three rainfall patterns throughout the year. Although Aceh and North Sumatra experience low rainfall, the underlying causes of this condition are unknown. Unfortunately, studies on drought in these regions are very limited. This study uses the Effective Drought Index (EDI) to assess drought in these regions using daily rainfall data from 1985–2019 (35 years) from the meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency stations. These stations are Sultan Iskandar Muda, Malikussaleh, Deli Serdang, and FL Tobing. In this study, the Ocean Niño Index (ONI) and the Dipole Mode Index (DMI) were used to identify El Niño years and positive and negative phases of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). These indices were used to analyze drought-related climatic phenomena. The results obtained indicated that some drought events were not associated with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole or El Niño, as is typically the case. These include the extreme drought in 1989/90 and moderate drought in 1999 at Sultan Iskandar Muda, moderate drought at Malikussaleh (March to June 2008), moderate drought at Deli Serdang in 2010, as well as the drought from January to June 2006 at FL Tobing. Analysis of spatial patterns revealed that moderate droughts were more prevalent than severe and extreme droughts. These drought assessment results are essential for the mitigation of natural catastrophes.

Abstract

This article examines the extreme climate events on the Eastern Coast of Sumatra over four decades (1981-2019) based on the extreme rainfall index defined using the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI). The indices used include Consecutive Dry Day (CDD and the total rainfall per year (PRCPTOT). Theses indices were calculated and are based on the daily observation data from eight quality-controlled weather stations. While overall trends in extreme rainfall indices are not significant, there is a noticeable trend towards drought, with CDD rising by 1.23 days per decade and PRCPTOT decreased by 3.16 mm/year. The correlation between the Dipole Mode Index (DMI) and extreme rainfall indices in the August-September-October-November (ASON) period was positive, with CDD increasing with the more positive DMI value. On the other hand, the PRCPTOT index showed a decrease as the DMI more positive. The ENSO index and CDD are positively correlated during the dry season, while ENSO index negatively correlates with PRCPTOT. The duration of CDD during El Niño/positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events in 1997, 2015, and 2019 had significant impact on the forest and land fires on the Eastern Coast of Sumatra. The results are useful for policymakers in preventing forest and land fires on the Eastern Coast of Sumatra.

Abstract

Even though Sumatra is very vulnerable to the effects of drought, research identifying drought on this island is very limited, especially extreme drought. This research was conducted to identify extreme drought in Sumatra using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Effective Drought Index (EDI). This study uses precipitation data from the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and Global Precipitation Climatology Center (GPCC) reanalysis data. The composite indices were conducted to discover some phenomena that cause the drought based on El Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events. The results showed that the El Niño and positive IOD phenomena were more likely to influence extreme droughts. However, the droughts in 2014 and 2008 tended to be influenced by the negative Sea Surface Temperature anomaly (SSTA). The spatial analysis results show that the areas that experience extreme drought more often are the west coast of Sumatra (except Aceh province), especially based on SPI12 and EDI. The composite indices results show that the drought that occurred in Aceh province was more influenced by the El Niño phenomenon in the December-January-February (DJF) period and the positive IOD in the June-July-August (JJA) – September-October-November (SON) period. In addition, Aceh province is an area that is not affected by El Niño-positive IOD, especially during the SON-DJF period. These results can be used to mitigate drought, especially when El Niño-positive IOD phenomena cause it.

Abstract

A valid and practical STEM-based introduction to quantum physics module has been successfully developed. The module development uses a modified Rowntree development model consisting of three stages: the planning stage, the development stage, and the evaluation stage. Tessmer's formative evaluation was carried out at the evaluation stage, including self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one evaluation, and small group evaluation. Data collection techniques used walkthrough data and questionnaire data. The results of the expert review show that the EVR value from the experts is 88.1%. In the one-to-one evaluation stage, the HEOS value from student responses to the use of this module is 88.6% (efficient type). The module was revised into prototype two and re-tested apart from these two stages. In the small group evaluation trial, the HEOS score from student responses using this module is 93.0%. Thus, based on the study results, it is concluded that the developed module (teaching material) is valid and practical.

Abstract

This  research was conducted in North Sumatra, namely at Iskandar Muda, Malikussaleh and Deli Serdang stations in the period 1885 to 2019. The purpose of the study was to analyze seasonal and interannual rainfall patterns. The method used is Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and correlation between rainfall, sea surface temperature and wind. The results of the study showed that the rainfall pattern at Iskandar Muda, Malikussaleh and Deli Serdang stations had two peaks of rainfall. The peak rainfall of the three stations occurs in May and the second peak has differences between Deli Serdang and Iskandar Muda and Malikussaleh stations. Where the peaks of high periodization are only in the 6-month and 12-month periods. There is also a peak periodogram from each station seen in 18-30 months. Rainfall periodogram analysis shows the magnitude of data frequency for each phase cycle and its frequency. The correlation between rainfall, wind and sea surface temperature (SST) at the three stations has a different pattern. At Deli Serdang station, there is an influence of ENSO and IOD, while at Iskandar Muda and Malikussaleh stations there is no influence of ENSO and IOD. Then in the September, October, November (SON) season at the three stations there is no visible influence of ENSO and IOD.
