Abstract

Abstract

The sailfin lizard (Hydrosaurus celebensis) is a unique reptile species whose population may be threatened by habitat destruction as well as local and global trade. As an anticipation of extinction, sufficient ecological information is required to support its conservation efforts. On the other hand, information on its ecology is still limited. The aim of this study was to collect information on its feeding ecology. This study was conducted for 78 days from June to August 2022. Direct observations were made on sailfin lizards to determine when they started feeding and the species of plants and animals consumed. To determine the availability of forage plants, we set up 22 10 x10 m plots with 5 x 5 m subplots. The results showed that the sailfin lizard started to forage at noon. They ate more plants than animals. There were 18 plant species and 7 animal species eaten by sailfin lizards. Codiaeum variegatum, which had the largest canopy cover area, was the most prevalent species of forage plant. In general, it is also relatively abundant for animal feed. Ficus hispida and Davalia trichomanoides are the two forage plant species that are most frequently consumed out of the total of 18. One species, the river crab (Gecarcinucoidea), was the only one of the seven species of animal source that was frequently consumed. Key words: Sailfin lizard, Hydrosaurus, feeding ecology

Abstract

Abstract

In this case, the criminal act of extortion is committed by someone who feels he has the ability or power based on courage and claims in an area/territory that he has full authority. Perpetrators of criminal acts of extortion in this case in the Luwu area are termed thugs. Thugs carry out extortion because they think that they are someone who is brave (rewa) so they claim a place as their territory and anyone who carries out or seeks a livelihood in that place, is obliged to pay fees which in statutory regulations are called regional levies. The actions of these thugs are illegal because they are carried out by means of extortion accompanied by threats, unpleasant actions towards the local community, and irresponsibility. The fees collected by thugs are called thug quotas. This research was conducted with the aim of finding out the factors that cause the crime of extortion to occur and law enforcement efforts to overcome this problem.

Abstract

The ballast pump is one of the important components in the ship's balance system that functions to regulate the volume of ballast water in the ship's tank to maintain the stability and trim of the ship. The ball bearing component plays a role in reducing friction between the pump shaft and the pump housing and ensuring that the shaft remains aligned when the pump is operating. This study aims to determine the causes of ball bearing damage to ballast pumps, the impact caused by the damage, and preventive efforts that can be made. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with data analysis techniques using the fishbone method, namely with cause-and-effect diagrams. The results showed that the damage to the ball bearing of the ballast pump was caused by the lack of lubrication and the lack of checking and maintenance. The handling of this problem is done by disassembling the ballast pump and replacing the ball bearing and mechanical seal.

Abstract

Due to the absence of topsoil, low pH, and contamination by various heavy metals, revegetation of post-nickel mining land, which is generally carried out by planting economically valuable species, is usually unsuccessful. This study aims to identify tree species suitable for revegetation on post-nickel mining land in Kolaka Regency, Indonesia. Nine plots measuring 20 m x 20 m were distributed in the revegetated post-nickel mining land at three different age categories (1, 5, and 10 years) to observe the growth of revegetation trees, which are introduced species and native tree species that naturally invade the revegetation area. In total, there were 24 tree species found in the revegetated post-nickel mining land consisting of 9 introduced revegetation species and the other 15 tree species were native tree species that invaded the revegetated area. The older the age of the revegetation, the more native plant species are found. In line with the increasing age of revegetation, the density of revegetation plants decreases while the density of native plants increases. The population structure of revegetation trees does not indicate that the species can regenerate, while the inverted shape of the population structure of native plants indicates excellent regeneration potential. Thus, the results of this study recommend making native species, including Buchanania arborescens, Alstonia macrophylla, Ficus sp. Syzygium sp. Colona scabra, Litsea sp., and Metrosideros cf. petiolata as revegetation plants in former nickel mining areas.

Abstract

Sweeteners, preservatives, and caffeine in soft drinks can pose health risks if consumed excessively. This study aimed to develop a method for the simultaneous determination of acesulfame, saccharin, cyclamate, aspartame, caffeine, benzoate, and sorbate in carbonated soft drinks. The analysis was conducted using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) with a dual-wavelength PDA detector (Shimadzu LC-20AD), a C18 column (Shimadzu), and a UV-Vis spectrophotometer (Shimadzu). Standard materials included acesulfame-K, saccharin-Na, cyclamate-Na, aspartame, caffeine, benzoate-Na, and sorbic acid. Samples were obtained from a supermarket in Medan, Indonesia. Optimization parameters included detection wavelength, mobile phase pH, column oven temperature, and mobile phase composition. Validation parameters assessed were linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), accuracy, precision, and selectivity. The optimized method employed a mobile phase of phosphate buffer (pH 3.8) and methanol (80:20, v/v) at a flow rate of 0.55 mL/min and column oven temperature of 40 °C. Detection was carried out at 200 nm for cyclamate, caffeine, aspartame, and benzoate, and at 220 nm for acesulfame, saccharin, and sorbate. Validation results showed the method met all requirements, with recovery rates ranging from 95.21% to 99.82%, system suitability values of 1.0%–1.9%, and precision values between 1.65% and 2.48%. The method also demonstrated good selectivity. The concentrations of acesulfame, saccharin, cyclamate, caffeine, benzoate, and sorbate in the analyzed samples did not exceed the maximum permissible limits.
