Abstract

A good education results in acceptable learning outcomes. Teachers must be able to use all available resources in order for pupils to learn effectively through creative learning. The use of media relevant to the conditions and situations at school is one of the efforts to maximize learning at home. The difficulties of teachers in choosing appropriate media, particularly when teaching English words, is a concern. pupils continue to have inadequate vocabulary mastery; as a result, pupils' learning results require innovation and effort. Scramble is one of the media that can be employed. Scrabble games can help children learn language quickly. They must arrange the words on the game board using the letter tiles provided. The method utilized to conduct this analysis is a qualitative research method since it produces good data. According to the findings of this study, scrabble not only promotes enthusiasm and interest, but it also improves students' vocabulary in terms of spelling, pronunciation, and learning vocabulary, and it also helps significantly their speaking skills. Classes become more enjoyable, and such classes can inspire students to become more enthusiastic and confident in their ability to communicate in English.

Abstract

Discussions on the subject of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) are made more interesting by this study. In particular, the work concentrated on Hello Talk's smartphone app, which promotes language learning and acquisition through communication with native speakers and other language learners. This study aims to know the effectiveness of viewing the Hello Talk application for Indonesian elementary students’ speaking learning. A mixed method (qualitative and quantitative design) methodology was utilized in this study. Participants in this study were 10 students from sixth-grade elementary schools. The respondents were selected on purpose based on their own experiences of viewing the Hello Talk application during the process of learning English. Questionnaires and interviews were used as the research instruments in this study. The questions on the questionnaire were focused on students’ motivation in viewing the Hello Talk app, their expectations, effectiveness, and confidence level after viewing the app. The result shows that more than 50% of the participants were motivated to view the Hello Talk application to improve their English language proficiency. About 35% of participants expected that viewing the Hello Talk application can improve students speaking ability, and the effectiveness of viewing Hello Talk is 50%, which means that half of the participants argue that this application is highly effective. The last percentage is about the students’ confidence after viewing this app, it is about 38% in level 5 of 5.

Abstract

Currently, learning content that is more tangible and easily understood by students is learning by using media. The purpose of this research is to prioritize the needs that refer to the level of achievement standards in the form of stimulation or skills of elementary school students in toilet training habituation with correct ethics. The method used is an innovative working method. The researcher invited 10 students to be tested through interviews containing 10 questions about aspects of toilet training skills. Based on the results of interview assessments and practice trials on toilet training videos, there are very satisfactory results, namely, 90% of students are declared very good and some of the students are good, so it can be concluded that learning by using video media is feasible to be used or tested on students. This innovative research resulted in a product in the form of an interactive video CD entitled "Adab Toilet Training". This video explains the stages of using the toilet when you want to defecate. This video is accompanied by interesting sounds and colors as well as sounds that invite children to interact directly so that children can focus more and easily understand the contents of the video.

Abstract

Online learning is a transitional form of the education system in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is attempted as a form of continuing education by utilizing the Zoom, WhatsApp (WA), Google Form, and Google Meet applications. This study attempts to describe English learning activities at SMP IT Ad-Durrah Medan which implements an online learning system via WhatsApp. The data collection process was carried out systematically using interview techniques (also via online via google form). The results of this study indicate that online learning systems are considered appropriate as an alternative to maintaining the sustainability of the educational process in the Covid-19 era, including those practiced by education providers at SMP IT Ad-Durrah Medan. The reason for using the WhatsApp application is based on the familiarity of the application among teachers, students, and student guardians. The process of learning activities, assignments, and learning assessments are carried out virtually by educators during the Covid-19 pandemic. Likewise, the weaknesses of the online learning system are obtained, namely the internet signal is often weak so that it is slow to access search pages on google and student learning facilities are still limited.

Abstract

This study focuses on the discipline of psycholinguistics regarding language disordersin children, to be precise of Specific Language Impairment (SLI). This article analyzestwo 6-year-old children who show the characteristics of having SLI in languagedisorders during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to carry out this study, theresearcher used a qualitative descriptive research method. The method aims to describein a systematic, actual, and accurate way. This research is an analytical study of officialdocuments such as books, articles, journals, and the internet. The accuracy of the data isobtained from the observations of the researcher herself. This study reports that childrenwith SLI often stay until school age and can lead to a lack of academic ability and causevarious psychosocial problems. Some of the causes of SLI in children include genetic,environmental, and social factors, pre and perinatal, gender, prematurity, weight, socio-economic status, maternal mental status, mother's education, and vocabulary, and history of speech-language difficulties.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to ascertain the notable impact of utilizing the Busuu application on pupils' vocabulary. The Busuu program is an English language learning tool designed to enhance spelling, vocabulary, speaking skills, and word comprehension abilities.This study is conducted using experimental methods. The research samples consisted of an experimental class and a control class. The population for this study consists of eighth-grade students enrolled at SMP Muhammadiyah 57 Medan during the 2023/2024 academic year. The sampling method employed was purposive sampling. The test is multiple-choice. The research uses a vocabulary exam as its primary tool. The data, comprising 25 items, were analyzed using paired difference tests, specifically the Paired sample t-test, in SPSS version 27. The research findings indicate a disparity between the pre-test and post-test scores in the experimental class, with an average score of 65 and 76.54, respectively. Consequently, utilizing the Busuu program has resulted in a notable augmentation of kids' vocabulary. The analysis results indicate that the utilization of the Busuu application has a statistically significant value of 0.001, which is lower than the commonly accepted threshold of 0.05. This data suggests a substantial impact on the utilization of the Busuu application. Thus, the null hypothesis (H0) is refuted, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is affirmed.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe language impairments (motor aphasia). The specific goals of the study include describing motor aphasia-related language impairments, their etiology, and the use of language by those who have these disorders (motor aphasia). In this study, the author discussed the effects of Aphasia on grandmother in language acquisition. In this study, the author observed the language of a grandmother who is 66 years old. This research was conducted in Medan. The grandmother who was a participant in this study was named Zaimah Kusuma. She has dementia in her language due to her old age. The researcher conducted this research using descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was taken by interview, recording, and documentation. Dementia is a disease that causes loss of memory and the ability to think. These conditions have an impact on the patient's lifestyle, social skills, and daily activities. According to the study's findings, the 66-year-old aphasia patients who were its participants are capable of speaking simple words, questions, and instructions. 66 years old aphasic patients can typically pronounce sentences with the pattern S-P, P-S, and P-K

Abstract

Many people have recently turned to machine translation to help them translate their documents. However, it is not widely used in the academic field, owing to worries about its trustworthiness in appropriately rendering the source text in the target language. This tool only translates on a word-by-word basis without considering the actual meaning of the text and grammar rules in English. It often applies to the Indonesian structure. So, when students are using Google Translate to translate a text, a new issue arises because it just transfers language without knowing the correct grammar. This research methodology is qualitative research with a content analysis method as the research design. From 5 narrative texts that have been translated by Google Translate from Indonesia to English found that there are two omission errors, four addition errors, six misinformation, and two misordering error and the most common error is misinformation. This study seeks to educate students about grammatical issues that can arise when using Google Translate, allowing them to avoid making the same mistakes and improve their knowledge.

Abstract

Impactful features of the COVID-19 pandemic have brought many sectors, particularly the educational one. Online learning has replaced traditional classroom instruction. It puts a strain on both the students and the teachers to fully support the success of the online sessions. In order to effectively communicate learning materials to their students, teachers must use more creativity. Students are encouraged to be independent learners in the meanwhile. Therefore, this article aims to ascertain students' perceptions about applying the ZOOM program to facilitate online learning and examine how this application is reshaping the educational sector. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained from the questionnaire via Google form. The participants of this research were 20 postgraduates in English Education at one of the universities in Indonesia.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to clarify various forms of speech politeness in the conversation of teachers and students working together to learn English in an elementary school in the city of Medan. Utilizing a qualitative approach, this investigation. Data collection methods include observational methods, transcription techniques, and various methods for taking notes. The aim is to determine the purpose of the principle of politeness in language selection learning exercises and how to speak politely between instructors and pupils. The findings of this study show that using courtesy in influences the language and the feelings of the teacher’s nine maxims from the ten maxims that teachers in linguistic etiquette, specifically: 1) Opinion Maxim Reticence, 2) Agreement Maxim3) Maxim of Sympathy, 4) Maxim of Generosity, 5) Maxim of Approval, 6) Maxim of Obligation S towards O, 7) Maxim of Wisdom 8) Maxim of Humility, 9) Maxim of Feeling Toughness. In conclusion, polite communication between teachers and Students frequently speak Indonesian instead of English. Here is the teacher's attention in teaching in class with polite language.
