Abstract

This study aims to determine how students' perspectives of utilizing the wattpad application as learning media in reading. Ten EFL students from Indonesia majoring in English education participated in this study. This study gathered both quantitative and qualitative data through the use of semi-structured interviews, as well as open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires. The open-ended questionnaire delved into the advantages and disadvantages of using the Wattpad application, while the closed-ended questions gauged the frequency of students' use of the Wattpad application. Simultaneously, the semi-structured interview questions were crafted based on participants' responses to the questionnaires. Most participants found the Wattpad app valuable and user-friendly. They consider the Wattpad app as a valuable tool for language learning, inspiring independent study. The findings indicate that novice learners can derive greater benefits from mobile apps compared to experts. The research results show that students had positive views on using Wattpad as a reading application to enhance their skills. The study also outlines both the advantages and drawbacks of utilizing the Wattpad program. Students identified key benefits of extensive reading on Wattpad, such as user-friendliness, convenience, flexibility, and cost savings. These factors not only motivate increased reading but also inadvertently enhance students' writing abilities.

Abstract

Word matrices are tables that organize vocabulary and language concepts to aid acquisition. This study addresses the gap in understanding their effectiveness in Indonesian schools with limited resources. While extensive research exists on their use in metropolitan areas, little is known about their application in diverse educational contexts within Indonesia. By examining the five-year implementation at a private junior high school, this study aims to provide insights into their efficacy in resource-constrained environments. This mixed methods case study evaluated students' and teachers' perceptions over five years. The study involved 276 students in grades 7-9 and 5 teachers, with surveys and interviews from 36 students and 3 teachers selected through stratified sampling. Results showed over 90% of students used matrices weekly, with higher usage in advanced grades. Over 75% believed matrices significantly improved vocabulary and reading comprehension. However, weaker students reported minimal gains in writing and speaking fluency. Interviews highlighted that colorful grid designs and peer interactions engaged students but lacked focus on writing and proper transition support. Teachers recommended better alignment, targeted matrices, and activities to enhance academic writing, grammar, and speaking. Thus, matrices aid vocabulary and reading but need adjustments to benefit all learners.

Abstract

Teaching semantic concepts in tertiary linguistics programs has presented significant challenges for instructors. However, there needs to be a more in-depth exploration of this issue, hindering the understanding of underlying problems that impede effective semantics instruction. This qualitative phenomenological study aims to fill this gap by examining the difficulties faced by 15 experienced linguistics lecturers while teaching semantics courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Through in-depth semi-structured interviews, four major themes emerge, encompassing key pedagogical obstacles. First, students needed help to grasp complex, abstract, and philosophical semantic theories. Secondly, the technical precision required for semantic role labelling and predicate logic translation proved overwhelming for learners. Thirdly, establishing relevance to real-world applications proved to be challenging. Finally, excessive abstractions led to widespread student disengagement, motivation issues, and avoidance. The findings highlight the significant need for instructional design and pedagogical support in tertiary linguistics education to improve semantic teaching ability and learning outcomes. Proposed measures include specialized instructor training, scaffolding complex concepts, leveraging technology, fostering interdisciplinary connections, and enhancing social perceptions of semantics utility. These initiatives aim to develop the sophisticated semantic thinking required for advanced linguistics practice. Further quantitative research is suggested to validate and generalize these qualitative insights, informing nationwide improvements in systemic semantics curriculum.

Abstract

AbstractThe aims are to analyze the culture categories and get the most dominant category presented in the textbook.  Qualitative research design, specifically content analysis of textbooks is employed in the study. The objective examination of the text data's content using a systematic coding process to identify themes or patterns is a research method known as qualitative content analysis (Hsieh and Shannon, 2005, p. 1278). The primary data source for this study is a junior high school English textbook for ninth graders called Interactive English. The researcher employs established categories to analyze the data, including food and drink, locations, art, ceremonies, social behavior, beliefs and values, history, and individuals. These categories were developed by Adoskou, Moran, Dweik, and Al-Sayed in 1990, 2001, and 2015. The textual and visual data are examined based on the cultural categories of source culture, target culture, and worldwide culture. According to the findings, source cultures are shown more frequently than target and other cultures.  It appears in 6 categories, which means that there are 2 categories that do not serve the source culture, namely; belief and value and arts categories. However the source culture is not dominated in each category, but for the percentage, it is the highest percentage of all (41,7%), international culture is 36,1 %, and target culture is 22,2%. The source culture also appears to be the most prevalent category in the interactive English textbook, with a significant number of entries in numerous categories, followed by the target culture and the international culture.   Keywords: international cultural, source cultural, target cultural, international cultural
