Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the inheritance of vowels in the Karo language or Bahasa Karo (hereafter, BK) from Proto-Austronesian (PAN), and BK words that show the retention or inheritance of certain vowels, such as /a/, /i/, /u/, and //. The method involved comparing the phonological elements of BK with the equivalent elements in PAN by using the theory of comparative historical linguistics, including searching for inherited vowels in the penultimate and ultimate positions and observing the retention patterns that occur. The data were derived from 200 Swadesh words and three interviewers. Vocal retention occurs more frequently in the penultimate position than in the ultimate position. This shows how phonological positions affect vowel stability during language transition. These findings conclude that certain phonological components, particularly vowels, have a greater tendency to persist in specific environments. BK has preserved a significant portion of the original PAN vowel inventory, exhibiting less vowel reduction and merger compared to adjacent languages. The retention of vowels in BK indicates a phonological conservatism relative to the more dynamic vowel alterations observed in other Austronesian branches. This study also found a close relationship between PAN and BK in the inheritance of phonological elements of linear vocal of /a/,/i/,/u/,/e/, and one nonlinear vowel sound of /o/. Another important result is the transfer of the vowel /u/ from PAN to BK in the ultimate position shows a pattern of retention or direct inheritance.

Abstract

In rural educational institutions, various obstacles impede the acquisition of the English language. The difficulties experienced in learning English within these rural schools are intricately linked to the environmental conditions surrounding the students, the proficiency of the English instructor, and the overall educational atmosphere. This research examined the obstacles encountered by students engaged in English language studies in rural educational settings. Two English educators who participated in this qualitative research served as respondents. The results of this investigation indicate that the pursuit of English language proficiency in rural schools continues to encounter a multitude of challenges. The process of learning English proved to be arduous for several reasons, including the students' diminished motivation towards the subject and the insufficient external support, such as encouragement from both parents and the broader community.

Abstract

This study explores how hoaxes spread on TikTok by focusing on the use of language and hashtags as tools to influence public perception. Through the analysis of viral videos from 2025, the research uncovers how strategies like impersonating authority, emotional appeals, and simplified narratives are used to make false information feel convincing. Hashtags such as #fyp, #beritahoax, #deepfake, and #indonesiagelap play an important role in increasing visibility and shaping the tone of the content. These hoaxes often appear relatable, urgent, or credible—even when they are misleading. The findings show that TikTok’s algorithm, combined with the strategic use of language, makes it easy for misinformation to spread and influence how people perceive certain issues. The study highlights how easily misinformation can circulate in emotionally driven digital spaces and why digital literacy is essential to help users recognize and respond to manipulative content.

Abstract

This article results from research on language politeness in the learning process in the "Language Curriculum Evaluation and Design" class. Leech's politeness principle theory consists of six maxims: tact maxim, generosity maxim, appreciation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. This study aimed to find out the language politeness used in that class. Then, this study focused on the Lecturer's utterances to the students. The type of this study was descriptive qualitative. The instrument of this study was the researchers themselves and the audio recorder. The technique of collecting the data was tapping techniques to tap the conversation of the Lecturer with the students, field notes and observation. This research showed that Leech's politeness principles were used in that class. The maxim of politeness included tact maxim 22,7%, generosity maxim 13,6%, appreciation maxim 18,2%, modesty maxim 9,1%, agreement maxim 18,2%, and sympathy maxim 18,2%. Most of the maxims used in that class are tact maxims. After analyzing these six maxims, it is essential to have them when we are a lecturer teaching in the class. A teacher with the six maxims can control the class to run well.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the challenges experienced by EFL teachers in utilizing digital technologies in implementing Project–Based Learning in English classrooms. This study employed a qualitative descriptive research design to explore the challenges faced by EFL teachers in utilizing digital technologies within the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in English classrooms. The participants consisted of two EFL teachers from North Sumatera, Indonesia, who have implemented PjBL and integrated digital technologies in their English language teaching. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select teachers who currently teaching English at junior high school level. The findings show that teachers encounter four main types of challenges: technical issues such as poor internet and limited devices; pedagogical difficulties including limited training and confidence in designing digital PjBL; institutional barriers like unclear policies, lack of technical support, and limited budgets; and student-related problems such as uneven digital skills and low motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' reading comprehension in narrative texts through the use of concept-oriented reading instruction strategies. The subject of this study was her 8th grade student in his SMA N 1 in 2017. This study of this study was conducted using a classroom behavioral study. The data used in this study is based on pre-test results, interview sheets, and observation sheets to know before and after the test. The study found that the number of students reading narrative texts increased. The pretest average was 39.80. The first cycle average was 87.86, indicating that the first cycle results and averages were superior to the pre-test. The percentage of students who did not score above 75 also increased. Three of her students (11%) passed or scored up to 75 on the pretest. On the Cycle I posttest, 26 of her students (100%) scored 75 or higher, an increase of approximately 89%. In other words, the students' reading comprehension of the narrative texts improved more and more from the first session to the next. The calculated t-test formula was used for hypothesis testing. We found that the observed coefficient t(16.63) > ttable(1.708). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Hα) may be accepted. Based on this finding, the alternative hypothesis (Hα) states that the CORI strategy may improve students' reading comprehension of narrative texts.

Abstract

This section begins by expressing concerns about traditional face-to-face learning, which often focuses on listening and teaching. This shows that higher order thinking skills (HOT) such as analysis are needed in the curriculum. The research methodology used is descriptive qualitative. This approach aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the difficulties students face when translating English into Indonesian. This research focuses on first-grade students at Aras Kabu Agung Tanjungbalai Private Madrasah Aliyah for the academic year 2022/2023. The sample consisted of 29 students who were selected based on certain criteria set by the researcher. This research uses various data collection techniques, including observation, interviews, tests, questionnaires, accuracy assessment, acceptability evaluation, and readability assessment. These methods help collect comprehensive data about the difficulties faced by students. The main instrument of this research is argumentative text. Researchers use help sheets containing questions and answers, along with tables to assess the quality of the translation. The research findings revealed that 68.57% of the students sampled (20 out of 29) experienced difficulties in understanding the meaning of the source language, making it a challenge. for them to translate into the target language. This linguistic difficulty is caused by a lack of vocabulary and limited understanding of translation. In addition, 62.85% of students (also 20 out of 29) faced challenges when translating words related to cultural values, which is a non-linguistic difficulty. In conclusion, research shows that students' difficulties in linguistic factors, especially understanding the source language, pose greater challenges than non-linguistic factors such as translating words related to cultural values. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the translation difficulties faced by students in certain academic contexts.
