Abstract

This research examines the use of taboo language in the film Uncut Gems, focusing on identifying the types of taboo language and their functions. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study analyzes linguistic features within the film. The findings reveal four types of taboo language: vulgarity (69 occurrences, 61%), epithet (30 occurrences, 26%), obscenity (12 occurrences, 10%), and profanity (3 occurrences, 3%). Each type serves distinct functions in the narrative, including being provocative, showing contempt, drawing attention, and mocking authority. The most frequent function was provocation (65 occurrences, 61%), followed by showing contempt (23 occurrences, 21%), drawing attention (19 occurrences, 17%), and mocking authority (1 occurrence, 1%). Taboo language plays a crucial role in intensifying the film's emotional impact and enhancing the portrayal of complex social dynamics. This study contributes to understanding how language in film serves as a tool for narrative depth and audience engagement, offering insights into the interplay between language, story, and social context in cinema.

Abstract

Interlanguage is a transitional stage in language learning, where a person’s language ability moves from their first language (mother tongue) toward the other language. It is important to note that interlanguage is distinct from the mother tongue and the second/foreign language. This study examines the translation errors made by students when translating from Bahasa Indonesia to English during their interlanguage stage. The study aims to investigate (1) how students translate at this stage, (2) the types of errors they make, and (3) the most frequent errors. Using descriptive qualitative and content analysis methods, ten seventh-grade junior high school students participated in this study whose mother tongue is Bahasa Indonesia, and English is a foreign language/target language. For the instrument, this study uses an individual sentence translation test. The students were instructed to translate four unrelated sentences each, with a time limit of one minute per sentence. The researcher uses sources of error theory from Richard and Lott. The findings indicate that (1) most students tend to transfer the rules of their mother tongue into English. (2) Out of 40 sentences, it found 18 contained errors, leading to 26 mistakes: 8 interference errors (7.7% transfer of structure, 23% interlingual), and 18 intralingual errors (11.5% incomplete application of rules, 30.8% false concept hypothesized, and 27% overgeneralization). Meanwhile, (3) the most frequent error is false concept hypothesized, followed by overgeneralization, interlingual errors, incomplete application of rules, and transfer of structure errors.

Abstract

Live streaming sessions on online platforms, focusing on two different genres of games: Clash Royale and DreadOut. Using descriptive qualitative research with content analysis, the study identified and categorized swear words into six types: sexuality, insults, animal-based terms, personal background, intellect-based terms, and English swears. The analysis revealed that the frequency and types of swear words varied depending on the game's nature. In Clash Royale, animal-based terms were predominantly used, while in DreadOut, English swears were more prevalent. Overall, the most frequent swear words across both videos were related to animal-based terms, and English swears, suggesting that gamers adapt their language based on emotions and game environments. The study sheds light on the dynamics of language use in online gaming communities and highlights the role of swear words as expressions of emotion and intensity during gameplay. Further research could explore the psychological and social implications of swearing in gaming contexts and strategies for promoting responsible language use among gamers.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of speech and language in shaping the communication of ideas and emotions on social media, with a particular focus on TikTok. Social media platforms, while enabling widespread and instantaneous interaction, often have both positive and negative consequences for individual users and targeted groups. By employing a qualitative methodology, this research explores how language choices on TikTok influence personal expression, identity construction, and collective social dynamics. Analyzing the linguistic behaviors of 10 TikTok users, the study identifies how multimodal elements such as emojis, memes, and audio-visual integrations enhance digital communication. The findings reveal that the informal, rapid nature of social media communication reflects broader societal trends toward dynamic and hybrid linguistic forms. Furthermore, social media serves as a space for fostering cultural diversity, promoting social movements, and enabling users to create and refine their online personas. However, the study also highlights the challenges posed by such digital communication, including the potential for misunderstandings and the reinforcement of social inequalities. By situating these findings within the context of evolving digital communication, this research offers valuable insights into the interplay between language, identity, and culture in the digital age. It contributes to broader discussions about the implications of multimodal communication for literacy, linguistic evolution, and social interaction in a rapidly globalizing world. Keywords: Multimodal Language, TikTok, Social Media

Conversational implicature is one of the most important ideas in pragmatics. The importance of conversational implicatures as a means of conveying messages is directly well established. In conducting this research, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. This research is qualitative because the data are in the form of words and analyzed based on the setting or natural context. Qualitative research is a type of research in which data are studied naturally without any treatment or intervention by researchers. Related to teaching English, this research helps students to know about figure of speech – how they are expressed in the context of certain situations. Referring to implicature theory, students know that conversation is more than just a series of exchanges; it consists of exchanges ideas according to norms of conversational cooperation, which can be manipulated to create various meanings. The application of conversational implicatures in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is in the learning process in the classroom between teachers and students. Conversational implicatures in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs can provide several benefits and lessons for all students in learning to speak by increasing students' motivation, interest, and understanding of the learning material.
