Abstract

This study aims to explore the challenges experienced by EFL teachers in utilizing digital technologies in implementing Project–Based Learning in English classrooms. This study employed a qualitative descriptive research design to explore the challenges faced by EFL teachers in utilizing digital technologies within the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in English classrooms. The participants consisted of two EFL teachers from North Sumatera, Indonesia, who have implemented PjBL and integrated digital technologies in their English language teaching. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select teachers who currently teaching English at junior high school level. The findings show that teachers encounter four main types of challenges: technical issues such as poor internet and limited devices; pedagogical difficulties including limited training and confidence in designing digital PjBL; institutional barriers like unclear policies, lack of technical support, and limited budgets; and student-related problems such as uneven digital skills and low motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' reading comprehension in narrative texts through the use of concept-oriented reading instruction strategies. The subject of this study was her 8th grade student in his SMA N 1 in 2017. This study of this study was conducted using a classroom behavioral study. The data used in this study is based on pre-test results, interview sheets, and observation sheets to know before and after the test. The study found that the number of students reading narrative texts increased. The pretest average was 39.80. The first cycle average was 87.86, indicating that the first cycle results and averages were superior to the pre-test. The percentage of students who did not score above 75 also increased. Three of her students (11%) passed or scored up to 75 on the pretest. On the Cycle I posttest, 26 of her students (100%) scored 75 or higher, an increase of approximately 89%. In other words, the students' reading comprehension of the narrative texts improved more and more from the first session to the next. The calculated t-test formula was used for hypothesis testing. We found that the observed coefficient t(16.63) > ttable(1.708). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Hα) may be accepted. Based on this finding, the alternative hypothesis (Hα) states that the CORI strategy may improve students' reading comprehension of narrative texts.

Abstract

This section begins by expressing concerns about traditional face-to-face learning, which often focuses on listening and teaching. This shows that higher order thinking skills (HOT) such as analysis are needed in the curriculum. The research methodology used is descriptive qualitative. This approach aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the difficulties students face when translating English into Indonesian. This research focuses on first-grade students at Aras Kabu Agung Tanjungbalai Private Madrasah Aliyah for the academic year 2022/2023. The sample consisted of 29 students who were selected based on certain criteria set by the researcher. This research uses various data collection techniques, including observation, interviews, tests, questionnaires, accuracy assessment, acceptability evaluation, and readability assessment. These methods help collect comprehensive data about the difficulties faced by students. The main instrument of this research is argumentative text. Researchers use help sheets containing questions and answers, along with tables to assess the quality of the translation. The research findings revealed that 68.57% of the students sampled (20 out of 29) experienced difficulties in understanding the meaning of the source language, making it a challenge. for them to translate into the target language. This linguistic difficulty is caused by a lack of vocabulary and limited understanding of translation. In addition, 62.85% of students (also 20 out of 29) faced challenges when translating words related to cultural values, which is a non-linguistic difficulty. In conclusion, research shows that students' difficulties in linguistic factors, especially understanding the source language, pose greater challenges than non-linguistic factors such as translating words related to cultural values. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the translation difficulties faced by students in certain academic contexts.

Abstract

This research discusses code-switching and code-mixing in the podcast Rahasia Gadis with Naura Ayu, especially in the episode Proses jadi dewasa. Using a descriptive qualitative method and sociolinguistic approach, this study found that the most dominant form of code switching is intra sentential switching, followed by code mixing in words, phrases, and clauses. These bilingual elements clarify meaning, show social identity, and create a relaxed and personalized atmosphere between the speaker and the listener. The findings reveal that code-switching and code-mixing reflect bilingual ability and become communication tools that enrich conversations, making them more interactive and relevant in digital media.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Cambly in improving the speaking abilities of high school students in Indonesia and to gather their perspectives on the app's usability and impact. A mixed-methods approach was used, with a sample group of 12 students who participated in one-on-one Cambly sessions over four weeks. Data was collected through pre- and post-tests measuring speaking proficiency, as well as surveys and interviews assessing user satisfaction and perceived improvements. The results indicate a significant improvement in students' speaking proficiency, with most participants reporting increased confidence and better pronunciation. However, challenges such as internet connectivity issues and subscription costs were noted. The findings suggest that Cambly can be an effective supplement to traditional English teaching methods, offering personalized and interactive language practice. Implications include the potential for schools to integrate Cambly into their language programs, with an emphasis on ensuring affordable access to digital learning tools. Future research should focus on the long-term effects of Cambly and compare its effectiveness to other language-learning platforms

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the most common teachers' talk in EFL classrooms as well as the reasons that influenced their selection. This research focused on the teacher's perception of how the teacher talks with students in class and some of the challenges that teachers might face while interacting with students to encourage students in the learning process to take place. The participants of this research were 2 English teachers who received professional training in English teaching as part of the undergraduate program. They were English teachers at an integrated Islamic school in Medan. The observations were made to describe the teacher interview process data and also the learning carried out by the teacher to find insights about how the teacher talks and what challenges the teacher faced when interacting with students in class. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. The findings in this study were that the teacher applied more dominant English communication as input. Teachers felt that increasing the use of the target language will be more challenging because it is influenced by several aspects, such as the motivation, attitude, and skills of the teacher and students. In addition, when the teacher spoke it varies greatly on several levels based on the factors that influence the teacher and student. The results of this study also showed that most teacher conversations are used in the form of questions, then explaining the lesson, giving directions to students, and praising or encouraging students. Apart from that, because students are considered as learners or beginners, class interaction must be adjusted to the right and appropriate choice of language so that communication becomes easier and more effective. In addition, the analysis of teachers’ talk in the classroom would be beneficial for teachers to plan and conduct enhanced learning situations.

English textbooks used in junior and senior high school written by Indonesian authors were also analyzed by the researcher. This study came up with the findings that (1) there are six common barriers to teaching pragmatics in EFL classroom by Indonesian EFL teachers and (2) most of the ELT textbooks do not consider the pragmatic norm in its content. Given the significance of students' pragmatic abilities, EFL teachers need to keep improving their research of teaching pragmatics in order to help EFL learners in developing their pragmatic competence.
