Abstract

The study of cognitive stylistics has become increasingly significant in understanding how readers engage with literary texts, particularly poetry. Despite existing research, there remains a gap in examining mental simulation and conceptual blending specifically in William Wordsworth’s The Solitary Reaper. This study aims to explore these cognitive processes and their impact on emotional engagement with the poem. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive analytical approach, we conducted a close reading of the text, supported by relevant literature on cognitive stylistics. Our findings indicate that Wordsworth’s vivid imagery and emotional resonance facilitate mental simulation, allowing readers to connect deeply with the themes of solitude and beauty. Additionally, conceptual blending merges various emotional and contextual elements, enhancing the poem’s interpretative richness. This research highlights the role of cognitive stylistics in appreciating poetry and how language activates cognitive and emotional responses.

Abstract

Kendrick Lamar's 2017 song "PRIDE." from his album DAMN. goes with themes of internal chaos, pride, and regrets. Using a cognitive stylistic method, this study investigates how Lamar's metaphors influence listeners' perceptions and emotional comprehension. It answers two key queries: (1) Which schemas or mental models are activated in the brains of the listeners? and (2) How are complicated feelings like pride and shame expressed through Lamar's metaphors? Drawing on the song's official lyrics, the analysis is based on Schema Theory (Anderson, 1977) and Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff Johnson, 1980). By examining recurrent patterns of imagery, word choice, and narrative structures that correspond with experiences that are both cognitively and culturally recognizable, schemas may be found in the lyrics. For example, Lamar's use of chronological changes (“I was born like this”) and geographical oppositions (“sitting in silence”) to illustrate internal struggle activates schemas linked to memory, self-examination, and moral dualism. Metaphors like "empathy as sacrifice" and "pride as death" appeal to common conceptual frameworks in which empathy is linked to vulnerability or redemption and pride to destruction or collapse. Listeners are able to emotionally connect with the abstract problems Lamar offers because these metaphorical expressions suggest larger schemas regarding identity, morality, relationships, and spiritual tension.

Abstract

This study analyzes the poem O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman using pragmatic stylistic analysis based on speech acts, deixis, and implicature. It adopts a qualitative descriptive analytic model and seeks to answer the question of how Whitman’s linguistic choices affect the emotional and communicative dimensions of the poem. It’s found that expressive, directive, and commission speech acts create feelings of grief, admiration, and a promise of remembrance. Personal, temporal, and spatial deixes emphasize the relationship between the speaker, the deceased leader, and the historical context. The message of the poem, the irony of victory hidden in deep loss, is revealed through implicature. This study shows that Whitman’s choice of language in the elegy touches the hearts of the nation. The study reveals the importance of carrying out a pragmatic stylistic analysis of poetry to discover more meanings behind the text.

Abstract

This study explores how female agency and resistance are represented in the animated film Wolfwalkers (2020) through the lens of Feminist Stylistics, as proposed by Sara Mills. The analysis focuses on linguistic features such as naming, transitivity, and sentence structure to uncover how the film challenges traditional gender roles and conveys themes of empowerment. The findings reveal that Wolfwalkers portrays its female characters as independent, courageous, and capable of subverting patriarchal authority. Through stylistic choices in both dialogue and narration, the film articulates a feminist discourse that foregrounds solidarity and transformation. This research contributes to feminist stylistic studies by demonstrating how language functions as a tool for resistance and gender redefinition in animated storytelling.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing gender inequality and social discrimination in the movie “Gangubai Kathiawadi” describing how women and gender roles presented in texts by applying a feminist approach. Through a qualitative descriptive approach, this study explores the dialogue in the movie at three different levels; words level, phrase/sentence level, and discourse level. The primary objective of this research is to see how gender bias is depicted through texts. One of the main findings of this study is that women in brothels are often treated as lawbreakers, even though they are often in oppressive situations and how the main character in this movie tries to fight for the rights and integrity of women. The dialogue in the movie successfully depicts the injustice experienced by women. Reinforcing the idea that justice, security, and a decent life are the rights of all women, regardless of their jobs.

Abstract

The politeness, dignity, serenity, and tranquillity should be reflected by the investigator without violence during the interrogation process. This study aims to identify the Forensic Conversational Implicature (FCI) found in a police interrogation of a murder case. A qualitative method with a philosophical approach was used, and Forensic Discourse Analysis was used as an analytical framework. A documentation study method was used to collect the data in the form of an interrogation video obtained from the Explore with Us YouTube channel. Utterances that are indicated as implicature are the data taken from the interrogation video, particularly in murder cases that happened in the U.S. In analyzing the data, deductive content analysis was applied. The results show that two types of FCI are found in this study, with particularized conversational implicature as the most dominant since it requires certain background knowledge and context to understand the investigator’s utterances. Meanwhile, generalized took second place as it does not require specific context knowledge to determine the additional conveyed meaning of several investigators’ utterances. Moreover, the reasons behind the realization of CI are under two themes, namely, gaining trust and humanity.

Abstract

The norms of linguistic correctness often stigmatize non-standard accents and varieties of English, reinforcing a perception of inadequacy among non-native speakers. This stigmatization is particularly evident among students learning English as a foreign language, many of whom may view native-like accents as the ideal, which can diminish their confidence in their own speech. This study investigates the attitudes of students towards their own English accents, aiming to uncover the underlying reasons for these attitudes and identify their preferred English accents. Utilizing a descriptive research design, a set of questionnaires was administered to 34 students at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The findings reveal that most students have negative attitudes towards their own English accents, largely influenced by affective factors such as self-esteem, anxiety, and fear of judgment. In contrast, behavioral and cognitive factors contribute to more neutral stances. The majority of students express a preference for the American accent, a choice shaped by the global dominance of American media, the Indonesian education system’s focus on American English, and the perceived career benefits tied to American English proficiency. Furthermore, students associate the American accent with prestige, higher social status, and enhanced employment prospects. These findings underscore the need for educational interventions that challenge the bias toward specific accents and promote a more inclusive appreciation of the diversity within the English language. The study’s implications are critical for educators and policymakers in developing curricula that foster positive attitudes toward diverse English accents, ensuring that learners feel confident in their unique linguistic identities.

Abstract

Israel-Hamas conflict has been a worldwide issue and its news on social media raised various responses on the comment section. Counter-speech comments are found on Instagram in most of hate speech comments. The study aimed to determine the types of counter-speech`s exchanges and its strategy found on Instagram comment section towards Israel and Hamas conflict news also to investigate the perceptions of social group about Israel and Hamas. Campbell Kathrin's (2010) theory used to examine respondents' views based on social assessment and social identification and Susan's (2016) framework to classify counter-speech interactions and tactics/strategy used. Documentary was used by selecting the suitable data on BBC Instagram account`s comments which were counter-speech written in English and interview were done to seven respondents as Instagram users from Indonesia with the age category of 18 to 34 years. The result shows that: (1) two exchanges type of counter-speech used in the comment section conflict namely One-to-One and One-to-Many are commonly used in Instagram as its features support; (2) the counter-speech comment contained all strategy that was dominantly used Pointing Out Hypocrisy or Contradictions and Presentation of Facts to Correct Misstatements or Misperceptions; and (3) social identification plays a role in the perspective or interpretation especially Racial and Ethnic Identification while social evaluation is more impactful to the use of word choice or diction.

Abstract

Gender stereotypes that are developed in the society influence people’s thoughts and behavior. Schools contribute the socialization of gender through textbooks or interaction between teachers and students. Textbooks are extremely important in forming students' values, ideologies, and social norms. They are also acknowledged for having a major impact on how students' gender roles develop, especially in elementary school. Language use and social lives of pupils may be impacted by gender representation. The textbook material they study accounts for half of the influence. Children have access to a wealth of knowledge regarding behavior, characteristics, and social roles that are proper for each gender that are portrayed in textbooks. This research was aimed to see how gender represented according to the three social context parameters such as family, occupation, and leisure activities were used to perform Examining the gender portrayals of male and female characters in the Super Minds 6 English textbook. This research used qualitative and quantitative research methods and employed Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory as the method of analysis. In conjunction with CDA, Giaschi's Visual Grammar theory is also used as an analytical tool to explain the depiction of gender representation in the textbook. Based on the findings, there are more male pictures than female pictures.

Abstract

This study examines the pragma-stylistic features of President Prabowo Subianto’s speech at the 2024 World Government Summit. Using Speech Act Theory by Austin (1962) and Searle (1969), the analysis identifies and categorizes different types of speech acts employed in the speech. The study focuses on how language functions as a strategic tool in political discourse, shaping perceptions and reinforcing ideological positions. A total of 57 sentences were extracted and analyzed to determine the frequency and distribution of speech act categories. The findings reveal that representative speech acts dominate the speech (57.89%), followed by expressive (15.79%), commissive (14.04%), directive (7.01%), and declarative (5.27%) acts. These results highlight the rhetorical strategies used by President Prabowo to assert political commitments, express national priorities, and engage with a global audience that revolves around trust with other country. This study enhances insight into how speech acts influence international discourse and contribute to the field of political communication.
