Abstract

Abstract

The issue of the relationship between reason and revelation constitutes a central theme in the epistemology of classical Islamic thought. Al-Farabi, as one of the most prominent Muslim philosophers, sought to synthesize these two domains through a systematic philosophical approach. This study aims to examine the concepts of reason and revelation in Al-Farabi’s thought and to elucidate how their relationship shapes the framework of Islamic epistemology. This research employs a qualitative method with a library-based approach, focusing on Al-Farabi’s primary works and relevant secondary literature. The findings indicate that Al-Farabi regards reason and revelation as two sources of knowledge originating from the same divine source and, therefore, not inherently contradictory. Reason functions as a rational instrument for apprehending truth, while revelation represents divine knowledge received by the prophet through the mediation of the Active Intellect. Al-Farabi’s epistemological framework remains highly relevant for contemporary Islamic thought, particularly in addressing the challenges posed by modernity and the dominance of rationalism.

Abstract

This article discusses the dynamics and challenges faced by muslims in the era of modernization, marked by the rapid development of science, technology, and globalization. Modernization brings varous changes in social, cultural. Economic, and relegious aspects that influence the mindset and behavior of muslim communities. On one hand, modernazation opens great opportunities for the progress of muslims through access to education, technological innovation, and global participation. On the other hand, challenges arise such as identiy crisis, shiffing moral values, secularization, and weak understanding of religious teachings. This article uses a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze how muslims respond to these changes. The results of the study indicate that an adaptive, critical and selective attitude is needed in facing modernization, while still adhering to the principles of islamic teachings. The integration of islamic values and contemporary developments is key to maintaining a balance between progress and religious identity. Thus, muslims can play an active role in building an advanced civilization without losing their spiritual foundation.

Abstract

The development of urban society has introduced new complexities in religious life, driven by technological advancement, social diversity, and changing patterns of religious communication. This situation requires da‘wah to move beyond traditional approaches and to develop contextual and adaptive communication models. This article aims to examine the role of da‘wah as a medium of communication in mediating transformations of urban religiosity through the phenomena of Urban Sufism and Urban Salafism. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design. Data were collected through a literature review of works on da‘wah and Islamic communication, classical Islamic texts (kitab), and an examination of da‘wah practices and materials circulating in urban public spaces, including digital media platforms. Data analysis was conducted using discourse analysis and da‘wah communication approaches to reveal patterns of message delivery, communication strategies, and the construction of religious meaning produced by these two da‘wah models. The findings indicate that da‘wah plays a significant role in shaping the transformation of urban religiosity, particularly in terms of religious awareness, Islamic identity, and religious practices. Urban Sufism presents a spiritual-communicative model of da‘wah that emphasizes inner experience, empathetic engagement, and dialogue with modernity, while Urban Salafism represents a normative-textual model that prioritizes doctrinal certainty and the reinforcement of religious identity. These two approaches demonstrate dynamic interactions and contestations of religious discourse within urban public spaces through narratives, symbols, and da‘wah communication strategies. This study underscores that da‘wah in urban society functions strategically as a medium of communication that shapes and continuously transforms patterns of religiosity in a dynamic and sustainable manner.
