Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of implementing the Story-Based Learning (SBL) model on the multidimensional literacy and emotional engagement of elementary school students. The research design employed a quasi-experimental method with a mixed-methods approach. A total of 180 fourth-grade students from three elementary schools were divided into two groups: an experimental group applying SBL and a control group following conventional learning. Quantitative data were collected through pre-test and post-test measures assessing reading, writing, and critical thinking abilities, as well as an emotional engagement questionnaire. In addition, qualitative data were obtained from participatory observations and semi-structured interviews to enrich the understanding of the learning process in the field. The analysis showed that the experimental group experienced a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the multidimensional literacy aspects, particularly in reading (85.4 vs. 78.7), writing (83.1 vs. 75.6), critical thinking (81.5 vs. 73.4), and collaboration and communication (84.0 vs. 77.3). An increase in emotional engagement was also reflected by a rise in motivation scores from 3.2 to 4.0 (on a 1–5 scale), accompanied by a higher level of students’ interest and self-confidence compared to the control group. Classroom observations and interviews indicated that story-based instruction successfully triggered students’ enthusiasm, empathy, and active participation in discussions and expressing opinions. Thus, SBL can be proposed as an effective and holistic learning model for enhancing both the multidimensional literacy and emotional engagement of elementary school students. The practical implications of these findings highlight the importance of teachers’ readiness in selecting relevant stories, designing creative activities, and managing classroom interactions in a communicative manner. Curriculum support and collaboration among stakeholders are also needed to optimize the benefits of SBL, fostering a literate, critical, and empathetic generation.

Abstract

Instilling of environmental love character is important to be applied to early childhood through nature-based education, given the increasing environmental problems that require serious attention. One method that is expected to have a positive impact is the activity of Tadabbur Alam. This study aims to examine instilling of environmental love character through Tadabbur Alam activities in children at RA Adirasa Jumiang and its contribution to clean social awareness. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, where data is obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation of activities. The results showed that Tadabbur Alam activities succeeded in increasing children's awareness of the importance of preserving nature, as well as building a sense of social responsibility for the surrounding environment. The children involved in this activity showed a more caring attitude towards cleanliness and environmental sustainability. In addition, this activity also plays a role in strengthening clean social values, such as responsibility and cooperation. This research contributes to broadening the understanding of how nature-based education can support the character building of children who care more about the environment and society.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to optimize the understanding and skills of elementary school (SD) teachers in Tarik District in implementing innovative learning based on deep learning. The concept of deep learning in the context of education does not solely refer to the use of technology, but also includes a deep, reflective, and meaningful learning approach. Through this approach, teachers are expected to be able to create a learning environment that encourages students to think critically, creatively, and be able to collaborate effectively. This activity was attended by 34 elementary school teachers from eight schools in the Tarik District area. In addition to providing training related to deep learning concepts and strategies, such as project-based learning and problem-based learning, this activity also introduced the use of OLabs (Online Labs), which is a virtual laboratory platform that can be accessed for free and is specifically designed to support the implementation of online experimental learning. The use of OLabs provides an efficient and flexible alternative, especially for educational units that have limited laboratory facilities. Based on the results of the evaluation, there was a significant increase in teachers' understanding of innovative learning principles, as well as a commitment to implement the approach in an adaptive manner and in accordance with the context of each school. This activity is expected to be the starting point in efforts to strengthen the pedagogic capacity of teachers, in order to support the implementation of the Independent Curriculum and answer the challenges of 21st century education.

Abstract

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often face difficulties in early reading due to challenges in communication and symbol recognition. Conventional learning methods are generally ineffective for them, as they tend to learn better through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic approaches. Therefore, an innovative, interactive, and engaging learning medium is needed. One such tool is the Magnetic Alphabet Educational Game (APE), which not only aids in letter recognition and word construction but also supports the development of 21st-century skills such as communication and critical thinking. This study employs a qualitative case study approach at TK Muslimat NU VI Pamekasan to examine the effectiveness of the Magnetic Alphabet APE in enhancing the early reading skills of children with ASD aged 5–6 years. The findings show that this media significantly improves focus, letter recognition, and word-building abilities. Supporting factors include visual appeal and teacher involvement, although challenges such as limited tools and varying levels of understanding remain. This media is recommended for use in inclusive schools and at home as an effective literacy strategy for children with special needs.

Abstract

This study investigates the comparative effectiveness of Discovery Learning (DL) models based on interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences in enhancing the emotional intelligence (EI) of elementary school students. Grounded in Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences theory and the constructivist paradigm, this research addresses the need for differentiated pedagogy that fosters both cognitive and affective development. A quantitative ex post facto design was employed involving 88 fourth-grade students from two public schools in Surabaya, Indonesia, who were categorized based on their dominant intelligence type. Emotional intelligence was assessed using a validated five-dimensional instrument comprising self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. The learning intervention consisted of eight sessions of Discovery Learning, with instructional activities tailored to each group’s intelligence orientation. Statistical analysis using an independent samples t-test revealed a significant difference in EI scores between the groups (p = 0.002), favoring students with interpersonal intelligence. These findings suggest that socially-oriented instructional models are particularly effective in promoting emotional competencies when aligned with students’ cognitive-emotional profiles. The study contributes to the discourse on adaptive learning design by demonstrating how intelligence-sensitive pedagogy can meaningfully enhance emotional intelligence in early educational settings.

Abstract

Local culture plays an important role in shaping early childhood character, yet its implementation in kindergarten remains limited, hindering the integration of social values such as cooperation, togetherness, and cultural identity. This study aims to examine the implementation of contextual learning based on Madurese local culture in enhancing young children’s understanding of social values. The research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews with three informants: one kindergarten principal and two kindergarten teachers. Observations were conducted during cultural activities, such as the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday (Maulid Nabi Muhammad SAW), the torch parade on the evening of 1 Muharram, and the introduction of Madurese traditional clothing, which represent the implementation of social values through local culture-based learning. The results show that local culture-based learning is effective in instilling social values such as mutual cooperation, togetherness, and pride in cultural identity. The contextual approach based on local culture in kindergarten also effectively connects learning materials to children’s daily lives, making them relevant and meaningful. Through direct experiences in cultural activities, children develop social skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. This learning approach also strengthens the relationship between children, teachers, parents, and the community, while fostering pride in local cultural identity. Overall, this approach supports holistic child development, socially, emotionally, and intellectually.
