Abstract

Arabic debate is an argumentative discourse with exceptional skills in conveying it; therefore, debaters are required not only to be proficient in the material but must also be able to use extraordinary rhetoric to satisfy the audience. This research analyzes the types and functions of Hyland metadiscourse markers used by debaters from the Indonesian team and the Singapore team in international inter-school debate events (ISDC) in Doha, Qatar. This research method uses descriptive qualitative research and a content analysis research design. Data collection techniques include listening and note-taking. At the data analysis stage, researchers carry out steps: collecting, reducing, presenting, and drawing conclusions. This research shows that all Indonesian and Singapore team debaters used all subcategories of Hyland's interactive and interactional metadiscourse marker categories. Metadiscourse is vital to conveying an idea or discourse so that the reader and audience can express and understand the concept well.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the learning obstacles experienced by eighth-grade students at a Madrasah Tsanawiyah in studying the topic of al-Afʿāl al-Muʿrabāt. A qualitative approach was employed using the Didactical Design Research (DDR) method. Participants included 47 students and one Arabic teacher. Data were collected through tests and non-test instruments, including in-depth interviews. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s framework, which involves data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students experienced both ontogenic and epistemological obstacles. Ontogenic obstacles included psychological factors (such as low motivation and interest) and instrumental difficulties, with technical incomprehension being the primary challenge. These findings suggest the need for instructional solutions. The study recommends the development of a DDR-based learning design tailored to students’ needs and informed by the identified learning obstacles.

Abstract

Abstract writing in Arabic-language academic articles reflects culturally situated rhetorical strategies. This study investigates and compares the rhetorical structures and linguistic features of abstracts written by native Arabic speakers and Indonesian speakers in the fields of Education and Linguistics. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, 80 abstracts were analyzed based on Hyland's five-move model and Kanoksilapatham's salience theory, with a focus on tense usage (māḍī vs. muḍāriʿ) and voice (ma‘lūm vs. majhūl). The analysis reveals that Moves 1–4 are obligatory (100%) while Move 5 is conventional (96.3%). In terms of linguistic realization, ma‘lūm (39.4%) and māḍī (28.3%) were most commonly used across the corpus. Notably, Arabic writers predominantly employed māḍī (77.4%) and ma‘lūm (74.9%), whereas Indonesian writers favored muḍāriʿ (57.7%) and also showed a strong preference for ma‘lūm (79.3%). These patterns suggest that Arabic authors tend to emphasize factual reporting and authorial agency, while Indonesian authors adopt a more prospective and procedural tone. These findings highlight the impact of linguistic and cultural backgrounds on academic rhetorical preferences, with pedagogical implications for enhancing Arabic academic writing instruction for non-native speakers.   Abstrak: Penulisan abstrak dalam artikel akademik berbahasa Arab mencerminkan strategi retorika yang terletak secara budaya. Penelitian ini menyelidiki dan membandingkan struktur retorika dan fitur linguistik abstrak yang ditulis oleh penutur asli bahasa Arab dan penutur bahasa Indonesia di bidang Pendidikan dan Linguistik. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan analisis konten kualitatif, 80 abstrak dianalisis berdasarkan model lima gerakan Hyland dan teori Kanoksilapatham, dengan fokus pada penggunaan tegang (māḍī vs. muḍāriʿ) dan suara (ma‘lūm vs. majhūl). Analisis mengungkapkan bahwa Langkah 1–4 adalah wajib (100%) sedangkan Langkah 5 adalah konvensional (96,3%). Dalam hal realisasi linguistik, ma‘lūm (39,4%) dan māḍī (28,3%) paling sering digunakan di seluruh korpus. Khususnya, penulis Arab didominasi mempekerjakan māḍī (77,4%) dan ma‘lūm (74,9%), sedangkan penulis Indonesia lebih menyukai muḍāriʿ (57,7%) dan juga menunjukkan preferensi yang kuat untuk ma‘lūm (79,3%). Pola-pola ini menunjukkan bahwa penulis Arab cenderung menekankan pelaporan faktual dan agen penulis, sedangkan penulis Indonesia mengadopsi nada yang lebih prospektif dan prosedural. Temuan ini menyoroti dampak latar belakang linguistik dan budaya pada preferensi retorika akademik, dengan implikasi pedagogis untuk meningkatkan pengajaran penulisan akademik Arab untuk penutur non-asli.

Abstract

In today's digital era, audiovisual content on social media is increasingly used to convey cross-cultural and linguistic messages. This research is motivated by the widespread use of subtitles as a communication bridge between languages, especially in religious and motivational content on social media. This study analyzed the subtitle translation technique from Arabic to Indonesian used in short films on @arabiyahtalks's Instagram account. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were obtained through video content documentation accompanied by Arabic-Indonesian subtitles, which were then analyzed to identify the translation techniques applied. The techniques found include reduction, amplification, transposition, and modulation. The results show that these techniques effectively bridge the linguistic and cultural differences between Arabic and Indonesian. Translators can convey spiritual and emotional messages in their entirety without losing their original nuances, thus creating translations that are easy to understand and relevant to Indonesian audiences. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of applying appropriate translation techniques in the digital context to ensure the message's accuracy while maintaining language flexibility. The main contribution of this research lies in expanding the study of social media translation and providing practical guidance for digital content translators to be more sensitive to the cultural and emotional context of the target audience.

Abstract

Penerjemahan teks bahasa Arab ke bahasa Indonesia merupakan proses yang kompleks karena melibatkan transfer makna, struktur gramatikal, dan konteks budaya. Penelitian ini secara khusus menganalisis teknik penerjemahan kalimat "كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ نَائِمًا فِي فِرَاشِهِ وَالسَّاعَةُ عَشْرٌ" yang terdapat dalam buku Qiroaturrosyidah, dengan mengacu pada teori penerjemahan Molina dan Albir (2002). Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa teknik amplifikasi digunakan untuk memberikan penjelasan tambahan mengenai waktu, teknik literal diterapkan untuk mempertahankan struktur gramatikal yang sederhana, dan teknik reduksi dimanfaatkan untuk menghilangkan elemen yang dianggap kurang relevan dalam budaya sasaran. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa penerjemahan berhasil mengadaptasi teks agar sesuai dengan pembaca bahasa Indonesia, tetap menjaga keaslian pesan, dan memberikan kejelasan makna.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the denotative and connotative meanings of the word sponsor in the context of police investigation reports related to human trafficking cases in Indonesia, using a corpus linguistics approach supported by the AntConc software. The data consist of seven BAP documents from victims, witnesses, and suspects of TPPO cases, analyzed using the Word List, Concordance, and Collocates features to identify the frequency and collocational patterns of the word sponsor. The findings reveal that denotatively, sponsor refers to individuals or parties involved in the recruitment of prospective migrant workers. However, connotatively, the term carries a negative implication, often associated with illegal recruitment and exploitation practices embedded within human trafficking networks. Frequent collocates such as who recruited, on behalf of, and requested documents illustrate that sponsor is not semantically neutral, but socially constructed as a key actor in trafficking crimes. The findings indicate that changes in legal terminology are needed to improve accuracy and transparency in legal documents. As such, the results of this study can contribute to efforts to increase transparency and effectiveness of law enforcement in human trafficking cases.

Abstract

Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan yaitu mengidentifikasi pola makna penggunaan kata “Antek” dalam korpus artikel jurnal politik dan pendidikan bereputasi serta mengidentifikasi kecenderungan tindak tutur Ilokusi yang terkandung di dalamnya. Fenomena penggunaan kata “Antek” dalam berbagai kajian wacana terutama dalam konteks politik dan sosial menunjukkan adanya pergeseran makna dan fungsi pragmatik yang menarik untuk dibahas secara mendalam. Tujuan penggunaan perangkat AntConc untuk mengidentifikasi frekuensi dan konteks penggunaan kata “Antek”. Penelitian ini menerapkan pendekatan korpus linguistik dengan tujuan mengidentifikasi pola makna kata “Antek” serta membangun korpus mini yang bersumber dari artikel-artikel jurnal bertema politik, sosial, dan budaya. Sebagai bagian dari tindak tutur Ilokusi, makna kata “Antek” sering digunakan seperti; makna tuduhan, makna pembentukan opini dan gaya bahasa dalam komunikasi. Data pada penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari jurnal ilmiah bidang politik dan pendidikan. Jurnal tersebut diperoleh dari tahun 2020 sampai 2025 tepatnya 5 tahun terakhir. Kemudian, dianalisis menggunakan perangkat korpus linguistik yaitu AntConc. Hasil analisis awal menunjukkan bahwa kata “Antek” sering digunakan dalam konteks negatif dengan kecenderungan sebagai labelisasi pihak tertentu dalam ranah politik. Kata ini sering dikaitkan dengan narasi negatif dari oposisi kepada pemimpin negara. Sementara itu, penggunaan kalimat “Antek” dalam konteks akademik, seperti dalam artikel pendidikan, kata “Antek” muncul dalam bentuk deskriptif atau kutipan terhadap wacana lain, misalnya: “Label ‘antek asing’ sering dipakai dalam wacana politik untuk mempengaruhi opini publik.” Ujaran ini bersifat informatif dan memiliki tindak tutur ilokusi representatif netral tanpa muatan ekspresif negatif. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan kata yang sama dapat memiliki dampak pragmatik berbeda tergantung konteks sosial dan tujuan komunikasi. Implikasi penelitian ini mengarah pada pemahaman yang lebih luas tentang peran tindak Ilokusi dalam pembentukan wacana dan pengaruhnya terhadap opini publik.

Abstract

The diverse cultural interpretations and expressions of Ramadan across different societies have not been extensively examined through a linguistic perspective, especially comparing Muslim-majority and minority contexts. This study aims to investigate how the word "Ramadan" is used and understood in religious lectures by Indonesian and American Ustaz, focusing on differences influenced by cultural and social environments. The research analyzes a corpus of transcribed lecture videos, processed into .txt format, and examined using AntConc software for word frequency, sentence positioning, distribution, and collocational patterns. The findings reveal that Indonesian lectures emphasize communal worship, ritual practices, and collective spiritual growth. In contrast, American lectures highlight individual faith journeys, personal spiritual struggles, and the challenges of preserving religious identity within a non-Muslim-majority society. These results demonstrate that while both cultures view Ramadan as a time for spiritual purification and seeking forgiveness, the primary distinction lies in the communal versus individual orientation of religious experience.

Abstract

This article explores the difference of tense and aspect use in Arabic academic writing by native and non-native speakers, driven by the challenges non-native speakers face in accurately conveying temporality in academic contexts. Improving non-native proficiency in Arabic grammar is crucial for enhancing the clarity of their research output. The study data consisted of academic articles written by both groups, specifically focusing on the results and discussion sections. Through qualitative analysis, findings revealed that native speakers demonstrate a strong grasp of grammar, with balanced use of past and present tenses and appropriate aspects, effectively expressing both completed and ongoing actions. In contrast, non-native speakers, particularly those from Indonesian backgrounds, tend to overuse the present tense and active voice, indicating difficulties in fully understanding Arabic’s temporal aspects. These results underscored the need for more intensive language instruction focused on mastering Arabic tense and aspect structures to improve non-native academic writing skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation techniques used by QuillBot in translating the text titled "مسائل في السحر" from the book "مسألة في الرقية والعين والمس والسحر ٦٠" by Sulṭān bin 'Abdullāh al-Umri. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method by classifying the translation results based on Molina and Albir's (2002) translation technique theory. The data analyzed include six translation techniques: transposition, reduction, modulation, amplification, calque, and naturalized borrowing. The study's findings reveal that modulation is the most dominant technique, appearing in 5 data points, followed by transposition and reduction, each with 4 data points. Amplification is used in 3 data points, while calque and naturalized borrowing are each applied to 1 data point. The analysis indicates that QuillBot's translations are generally acceptable but still have shortcomings in certain aspects that require human interpretation to maintain the acceptability of meaning. In conclusion, collaboration between translation software like QuillBot and human expertise is essential to produce accurate and contextually appropriate translations.
