Abstract

This research intended to develop assessment instruments for English literacy in blended learning. The study employed survey, observation, interview, and document study as the methods with a questionnaire, observation checklist, interview guide, and school document as the instruments to collect the data framed within RnD design with the 4D model by Thiagarajan et al. The developed instruments were categorized as ‘very high validity’ and ‘very good’ for their content validity (1.00) and product quality (96% and 98%) by the two judges. It indicates that assessment of learning, assessment for learning, and assessment as learning combined with authentic materials are necessary to improve the learning process as well as the students’ English literacy skills. It also implies that English teachers need to highlight the use of assessment for learning and assessment as learning since those assessments lack attention previously.

Abstract

A preliminary study found that the students faced literacy skill problems. The results of pre-tests proved that the mean score achieved by grade 4 was 42.49 (very low), grade 5 was 63.06 (low), and grade 6 was 49.58 (very low). Regarding these findings, this study further aimed to analyze whether implementing a discovery learning model that optimized a digital thematic multilingual dictionary could improve the elementary students’ literacy skills. This study involved four main steps, plan, act, observe, and reflect. The samples were 84 students determined purposively for deciding three classes among those nine classes representing 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. There were two kinds of tests, pre-test and post-test. The pre-tests were used to measure the literacy level before treatments, while the post-tests were employed to count for the literacy level after treatment. After four sessions of treatments and two post-tests, it was discovered that students' literacy skills could have been notably improved. The mean scores obtained on the second cycle, respectively, were 86.77 (high), 93.66 (very high), and 95.55 (very high). These results imply that the discovery learning model utilizing a digital thematic multilingual dictionary can enhance elementary school students’ literacy skills. Thus, it is strongly recommended that students regularly use dictionaries for their self-directed learning.

Abstract

As a post-developmental study, this qualitative research is intended to evaluate teachers continued experience in adopting My English Step (MES) digital learning material and promoting inclusion in Differentiated Instruction (DI) at junior high school (JHS). Nine junior high school teachers with MES experience were selected through focus group interviews. Research data were achieved by transforming recorded interviews into verbatim transcription. Three corresponding flows of activity were conducted during data analysis: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The consistency of findings was triangulated by comparing findings from interviews to those in documents on teachers adoption of MES in class and the literature review. The first finding shows that experiences have influenced MES-usability and teachers intent to adopt MES. Previously perceived as an English learning platform, MES is now posited as an adaptive digital learning object. This digital educational resource can be modified and adhered to its contextual connection. Next, improvements in content and functionality are requisite for MES to be adhered to in English learning in the enactment of Kurikulum Merdeka (KurMer). The last finding affirmed that teacher modification questioning strategies can promote inclusion when adopting and adhering to MES to KurMer. Future research should explore the extent to which students potential to learn English is improved by adopting MES.

Abstract

This study has the purpose to explore the politeness strategies of students in a vocational school, how the teachers and students apply the politeness strategies, and the implication of politeness strategies applied to the student’s good character improvement. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this study which explored the phenomena of politeness in the teaching-learning process. There were 16 classes which consisted of 464 students of XI grade in one of the vocational schools in Buleleng Bali as the participants of this research. 140 students from the hospitality department and  10 teachers were taken as samples for this study. The sources of the primary input were the teachers’ and students’ interactions in the classrooms which were observed and recorded. Ten transcriptions were collected from the observations of ten teachers observed when they taught in the Tourism Department. These transcriptions then were analyzed and reviewed according to Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory in 1987. This research showed that the vocational students applied some types of expressions such as greetings, thanking, addressing, apologizing, and filling. Some expressions or terms were derived from the daily language, which was applied to soften the students’ and teachers’ interactions. All the expressions were grouped into politeness which is positive and negative. The results of this research could be applied as a recommendation for the teachers and students to make the interaction in the classroom effective. Keywords: interaction, language, politeness strategies, teaching-learning process
