Abstract

Packaging plays an important role in maintaining the quality, stability, and effectiveness of medicines, both in the form of pharmaceutical preparations and herbal products. This review article aims to analyze the role of primary and secondary packaging materials through literature studies from various relevant journals. The method used was a literature review of four selected national and international journals that discussed the influence of packaging on product stability, information effectiveness, and product image in the eyes of consumers. The results of the study show that primary packaging functions to protect products directly from environmental influences, while secondary packaging functions in distribution, storage, and strengthening visual and branding aspects. Innovations such as the use of adsorbent plastics and visual redesign have been proven to increase stability and consumer confidence in the product. It can be concluded that packaging is a crucial aspect that not only maintains the physical-chemical quality of the product, but also shapes consumer perception and compliance.

Abstract

Stability testing is an important step in the development of pharmaceutical products. This testing must be conducted before the product is manufactured, whether on an industrial or non-industrial scale. Currently, liquid formulations are experiencing rapid development, one of which is suspension. Suspension itself is a liquid formulation that contains undissolved solid particles dispersed in the liquid phase. To assess the stability of suspension, various evaluations are performed such as organoleptic tests, sedimentation volume, redispersion, density, viscosity, particle size distribution, and pH measurement. Based on several studies, temperature is known to affect the stability of drugs, especially in suspension formulations. A study related to diclofenac suspension showed that at a temperature of 4°C, its stability reaches 96.3%, while at temperatures of 40°C and 60°C, there is a significant reduction in content, amounting to 89.58% and 85.17% respectively. Meanwhile, research on folic acid suspension revealed that the drug remains stable at temperatures of 4°C and 25°C, although on day 90 there was an increase in pH. Another study on cefuroxime axetil suspension showed that at a temperature of 20°C, its concentration was 87.68%, while at 5°C, it was higher at 92.35%. This research underscores the importance of considering temperature in the storage and formulation of pharmaceutical suspensions to maintain their effectiveness and stability.

Abstract

Pharmaceutical packaging plays an important role in maintaining the stability, safety, and effectiveness of drug products during storage and distribution. Drug stability can be affected by various environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, oxygen, and light. Therefore, packaging innovation is a crucial strategy to extend the shelf life of drugs and maintain product quality, especially for sensitive preparations such as injections, transdermal patches, and biologics. This study is a literature review that aims to evaluate the impact of packaging innovation on the physical and chemical stability of pharmaceutical products. This study confirms that packaging selection is not just a technical aspect, but a vital strategy in ensuring pharmaceutical quality. Further research is needed to integrate smart packaging and advanced barrier technologies into modern pharmaceutical distribution systems.

Abstract

Galangal (Kaempferia galanga L.) is a herbal plant known to have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities. The use of galangal extract in topical pharmaceutical preparations such as ointments, gels, and creams requires attention to the physical stability of the preparation to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the product. This study aims to examine the physical stability of various forms of galangal extract-based preparations through literature studies from three relevant journals. The method used is a descriptive literature study by analyzing the results of physical stability tests (organoleptic, pH, homogeneity, spreadability, adhesion, and viscosity) of ointments, gels, and creams. The results of the study showed that the gel form with a carbopol base provided the best overall physical stability, followed by an ointment with a water-washed base. Meanwhile, sunscreen cream made from galangal and seaweed showed quite good stability, although its spreadability and adhesion still need to be improved. This study provides an overview that the form and composition of the preparation greatly affect the physical stability of galangal extract, as well as the importance of choosing the right base in the formulation.

Abstract

Nanosensor-based smart packaging is a leading innovation in ensuring the quality and safety of food and drug products. This technology combines nanomaterials with advanced sensory systems to monitor the condition of products in real-time throughout the supply chain. The system allows for early detection of changes in temperature, humidity, pH, decay gases, and microorganisms, and provides accurate information on product quality. The nanosensors used have advantages in high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Despite facing technical challenges such as integration into packaging materials and production sustainability, the development of synthesis methods and fabrication technologies continues to overcome these constraints. The implementation of this smart packaging system has proven to be effective in extending shelf life, improving safety, and reducing product waste. Thus, nanosensors in smart packaging promise sustainable future solutions for the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract

This study presents an in-depth review of three journals focusing on the formulation, evaluation, and stability of polyherbal syrup preparations containing extracts of Moringa oleifera (drumstick leaves), Curcuma longa (turmeric rhizome), and Zingiber officinale (ginger rhizome). The polyherbal syrup is known for its strong antioxidant activity, with potential benefits as an immunomodulator and protection against degenerative diseases. The primary study emphasized physical stability testing through accelerated stability studies at 40°C ± 2°C and 75% ± 5% relative humidity for three months, using three preservative variations: sodium benzoate, methylparaben, and propylparaben. Evaluation of organoleptic properties, pH, viscosity, and specific gravity revealed that all formulations maintained good physical stability throughout the testing period. The review also highlights the importance of standardizing herbal raw materials through organoleptic testing, moisture content, water-soluble extract, and ethanol-soluble extract measurements to ensure consistent product quality. The syrup production process involves aqueous extraction of the herbal materials, followed by formulation with additional ingredients such as palm sugar, tamarind, lime, and appropriate preservatives. Overall, the findings suggest that this polyherbal syrup has significant potential as a stable, safe, and effective phytopharmaceutical product, supporting the utilization of local natural resources for the development of competitive herbal medicines in the modern pharmaceutical market.

Abstract

Product recall and returned product management are essential in ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of pharmaceutical preparations in circulation. Data were obtained from various journals and official reports from 2018 to 2024 relevant to pharmaceutical recalls. With effective recall mechanisms, customer safety and quality of pharmaceutical services are anticipated to enhance continuously. This review highlights the significance of strengthening effective recall systems, human resource training, and the use of digital technology in distribution processes. This article aims to thoroughly examine the procedures for product recall and returned product management within the pharmaceutical distribution chain through a literature study. The review shows that despite the availability of national and international regulations, implementation still faces difficulties such as absence of unified information systems, insufficient collaboration among industry players and authorities, and less than optimal quality culture in the field. Additionally, difficulties in product tracking, documentation, and recall decision-making are also concerns.
