Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic non-communicable disease and a major risk factor for cardiovascular complications. Poor treatment adherence and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors frequently contribute to inadequate blood pressure control. This case report aims to describe the comprehensive management of grade 2 hypertension in a 55-year-old female patient at a primary healthcare facility. Data were collected through history taking, physical examination, medical record review, and a three-week follow-up evaluation. The patient presented with intermittent headaches, numbness, and tingling sensations in both lower extremities. Physical examination revealed a blood pressure of 160/92 mmHg and a body mass index of 24.69 kg/m², classified as overweight. The patient had a five-year history of hypertension, poor medication adherence, a high-sodium diet, and insufficient physical activity. Based on clinical findings, the patient was diagnosed with uncontrolled grade 2 hypertension. Pharmacological treatment consisted of amlodipine 10 mg once daily and captopril 12.5 mg twice daily. Non-pharmacological interventions included health education regarding hypertension, medication adherence, sodium restriction, dietary improvement, increased physical activity, and regular blood pressure monitoring. Follow-up after three weeks demonstrated improvement in clinical symptoms, better treatment adherence, healthier lifestyle behaviors, and a reduction in blood pressure to 130/88 mmHg. This case highlights that a combination of pharmacological therapy, health education, and lifestyle modification plays an important role in achieving blood pressure targets and preventing long-term complications in patients with hypertension.

Abstract

Obesity is a growing global health problem, including in Indonesia. One preventative strategy is through the habit of reading nutritional information labels on packaged food products, which provide information on energy, fat, sugar, and sodium content. However, this habit remains low and has not been directly studied in relation to obesity incidence. This study is a literature review of articles from the Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and GARUDA databases from 2015–2025. Keywords used include "obesity," "nutrition information label," and "food label reading habits" in both Indonesian and English. The articles described are full-text and relevant to the topic. Several studies have found that individuals who regularly read labels tend to have a normal Body Mass Index (BMI). However, most of the literature only examines behavioral aspects or knowledge of nutrition labels, without exploring their direct link to obesity. Factors such as nutritional literacy, label design, and education significantly influence the effectiveness of labels on consumption. The habit of reading nutrition labels has the potential to help prevent obesity if accompanied by understanding and educational support. However, there is still a gap between knowledge and practice. A multidimensional approach is needed, including communicative label design, such as FoPNL, and ongoing regulation. Further studies are needed to examine the direct relationship between label reading behavior and obesity incidence.

Abstract

Cardiometabolic diseases are a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, with dyslipidemia and chronic low-grade inflammation playing key pathophysiological roles. Dietary factors, particularly dietary fiber intake, represent modifiable risk factors. This literature review aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary fiber consumption on lipid profiles and inflammatory markers. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed and Scopus with keywords related to dietary fiber, lipid profile, and inflammation. Of 157 identified articles, 8 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. The findings indicate that dietary fiber intake, especially soluble fiber, is consistently associated with reductions in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, particularly among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and metabolic syndrome. In contrast, the effect of fiber on increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol remains limited and inconsistent. Regarding inflammation, fiber consumption shows a more consistent anti-inflammatory effect on C-reactive protein (CRP), whereas its impact on proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α is variable. These differences may be influenced by fiber type, dosage, intervention duration, and participant characteristics. Overall, dietary fiber may serve as a safe and promising adjunct nutritional strategy for the prevention and management of cardiometabolic diseases.

Abstract

Obesity has emerged as one of the most significant global health concerns in recent decades, with its prevalence rising across different age groups and socioeconomic settings. Characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat, obesity disrupts metabolic regulation and substantially increases the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, liver disease, and various cancers. Recent evidence also highlights the rapid growth of obesity among children and adolescents, indicating long-term health consequences that may appear earlier in adulthood. This literature review examines the clinical aspects of obesity, including its definition, physiological mechanisms, and metabolic characteristics. It also explores the multifactorial risk factors associated with obesity, encompassing genetic predisposition, lifestyle patterns, socioeconomic conditions, and environmental influences. Furthermore, the review discusses the broad health impacts of obesity, ranging from metabolic and cardiovascular complications to psychological outcomes and intergenerational risks. The findings emphasize the need for comprehensive preventive and management strategies that integrate public health approaches, behavioral interventions, and supportive health policies to address the increasing burden of obesity at both individual and population levels.

Abstract

Protein is an essential macronutrient that plays a crucial role in growth, tissue repair, enzyme and hormone synthesis, and in supporting metabolic and immune functions. This study aims to comparatively analyze the effectiveness of animal and plant proteins in meeting daily protein requirements. The method used is a literature review by examining 19 scientific journal articles and official reports that discuss the role of protein, amino acid quality, bioavailability, and the long‑term health impacts of each protein source. The analysis shows that animal protein has high biological quality, contains all essential amino acids, and is easily absorbed by the body, making it effective in supporting growth, muscle mass development, and metabolic functions. Meanwhile, plant protein, although some sources lack certain essential amino acids, offers long‑term health benefits, is low in cholesterol, high in fiber, and environmentally friendly. Combining various plant protein sources can ensure the intake of all essential amino acids. In conclusion, the optimal strategy for meeting daily protein needs is to combine animal and plant proteins, thereby supporting high nutritional quality, optimal growth and body function, as well as long‑term health and environmental sustainability. These findings provide an important reference for the general public, nutritionists, and policymakers in designing healthy and balanced dietary patterns.

Abstract

Physical and cognitive development in children are strongly affected by adequate intake of zinc and vitamin D, as both nutrients play essential roles in bone formation, motor skills, immune function, and neurocognitive processes such as memory and learning. This review compiles evidence from studies published over the last decade showing that sufficient zinc intake is linked to improved linear growth, neuromuscular coordination, and overall motor performance. Meanwhile, vitamin D supports optimal absorption of calcium and phosphorus, promotes skeletal integrity, and may also contribute to cognitive development. Several studies emphasize the synergistic relationship between zinc and vitamin D, particularly through vitamin D receptor activity that involves zinc-finger domains, highlighting how deficiencies in both nutrients can increase the risk of impaired growth and cognitive delays in children. The findings underscore the importance of ensuring adequate nutritional intake through balanced diets, appropriate sunlight exposure, food fortification programs, and targeted supplementation for vulnerable populations. Addressing these nutritional needs is crucial for supporting optimal physical growth, brain development, and long-term health outcomes in children.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of nutrition education in improving adherence to iron tablet consumption among pregnant women through a synthesis of several studies using various educational approaches. The method used was a literature review of six studies with pre-experimental to quasi-experimental designs involving educational interventions through booklets, demonstrations, lectures, digital media, and family-based education. The synthesis results showed that all forms of nutrition education provided significant improvements in knowledge, attitudes, adherence to iron tablet consumption, and, in some studies, physiological improvements in hemoglobin levels and a decrease in the prevalence of anemia. The discussion emphasized that the effectiveness of education is influenced by the depth of the material, delivery method, family involvement, and sustainability of the intervention; a more comprehensive approach tends to produce stronger behavioral changes. In conclusion, nutrition education is a proven effective and essential intervention in improving adherence to iron tablet consumption among pregnant women and supporting efforts to prevent anemia during pregnancy.
