Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of using the mother tongue in delivering audiovisual health protocol messages on health attitudes and behavior during the Covid-19 pandemic. The measurement of the investigation into the variables of gender, age, and education level relied on the use of a 2X2X4 factorial design. Following the design, this study involved 240 volunteer participants randomly selected from 34 provincial clusters in the Indonesian territory. The data on the participants’ health attitudes and behaviors were collected through an online questionnaire formulated on five (5) scales. The questionnaire was given to 240 participants as a sample group after receiving health protocol messages conveyed in their mother tongue in a video. The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS and an additional syntax design. The analysis shows that the use of the mother tongue in conveying health protocol messages simultaneously had a significant effect on changes in attitudes and behavior by attending to gender, age, and education levels as contributing factors to the study results. The significant impact on attitude was partially seen from gender and age level factors, while the considerable influence on behavior was seen from gender factors. The other important findings, such as the interaction between factors and the proposed concept of direct persuasive perlocutionary, were also discussed.

Abstract

We propose a Mutual Language Policy to mediate shared interests between Chinese and indigenous workers in minimalizing frictions related to language attitudes, socio-cultural attitudes, ideologies and identities. So far, language policy has only sided with indigenous interests initiated by the government and has not involved foreign interests. By using multiple case study, we analyzed language attitudes, socio-cultural attitudes, as well as ideologies and identities of Chinese and indigenous workers to understand the frictions that occurred. We found that the language attitude of the Chinese workers was considered positive while the dominant use of Mandarin was only caused by the lack of mastery of both Indonesian and English. Next, the socio-cultural attitude of Chinese workers that seemed exclusive was basically caused by two main things, firstly, their concern about counterculture and contra behavior towards indigenous people.Secondly, the social class in employment context. Finally, the defense of the ideology and identity of the indigenous community seemed so strong was because of the collective defense system. Shared interests among them in a mutual language policy concept are also discussed.

Abstract

Students' attitudes towards language learning have two sides, either motivating or even diminishing their learning enthusiasm. The main objectives of this research are first, to assess students' attitudes in learning descriptive writing in German language; second, to develop an attitude assessment model in writing based on 21st-century competencies. This research adopts an exploratory descriptive approach with a sample of 35 high school students. Data were collected through attitude assessment sheets referring to 21st-century educational competencies, namely critical thinking skills, creativity, communication, and collaboration. Data analysis involved categorizing assessment results using average scores from all respondents. The findings indicate a tendency that most students achieve a good level in critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration aspects in learning to write in German. However, there is still a small portion of students who reach a very good level, indicating a gap in students' abilities. The attitude assessment model developed in this research significantly contributes to teachers in measuring students' progress and helps prepare students to become critical, creative, and inspirational decision-makers in various learning situations and daily life. The use of this attitude assessment model shifts the learning paradigm from emphasizing outcomes to developing students' relevant skills for future demands.
