Abstract

The use of relevant and concise wording in infographics is crucial to ensure that the information presented can be quickly and effectively understood by readers. However, existing infographics still need to strike a balance between information density and clarity of delivery. This study explores the relevance of words and meaning in student-created infographics, using Sperber & Wilson’s Relevance Theory (1986, 1995) as a framework. By analyzing three student-created infographics, the study identified the main structural elements of infographics: description (general overview), details (specific information), and significance (practical value). It also examined audience intentions, categorized as either informative or communicative. The results revealed that the "significance" element dominated all the infographics, underscoring the importance of the practical value and relevance of the information presented. Audiences were more likely to engage with infographics they found informative, although a balance between informative and communicative aspects—such as seen in Infographic 1—yielded optimal impact on audience comprehension and engagement. This study highlighted the importance of infographic design that emphasized word and meaning relevance to create effective communication. Recommendations are provided for more strategically integrating communicative elements to enhance the appeal and effectiveness of infographics in various communication contexts. Abstract

AbstractThis study investigates psycholinguistic perspectives on interaction patterns that facilitate meaning acquisition in BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing/Indonesian for Speakers of Other Languages) learning at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Employing a descriptive-analytic qualitative approach, the research examines how specific interaction patterns namely Student-Centered, Reciprocal, Collaborative, and Authentic Interactive support cognitive and linguistic processes in second language acquisition. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with two instructors and eight students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and thematic analysis of relevant teaching materials. The findings highlight the effectiveness of interactive and contextually enriched teaching strategies in improving students’ grasp of literal and contextual meanings, vocabulary mastery, and cultural competence. Drawing on Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development, this study emphasizes the importance of comprehensible input and scaffolding in fostering meaningful learning. The practical outcomes include recommendations for psycholinguistics-based teacher training programs and the design of interactive instructional materials tailored to the needs of culturally diverse learners. These findings contribute to advancing BIPA teaching practices and strengthening Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy initiatives.AbstrakPenelitian ini mengkaji wawasan psikolinguistik terhadap pola interaksi yang mendukung pemerolehan makna dalam pembelajaran BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing) di UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of language politeness in public services during dialogical patrols. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to understand how language politeness strategies are applied in interactions between police and society, based on Geoffrey Leech's politeness theory. Data were collected through direct observation of police dialogue with the community, which was analyzed to identify the realization of Indonesian politeness, politeness violations and how the construct of Indonesian politeness is constructed. The results showed that the maximum of Sympathy was the most dominant with a percentage of 25.68%, followed by the maxim of Praise (19.98%), Approval (17.16%), Wisdom (17.16%), Generosity (11.41%), and Humility (8.55%). Although there are some violations of politeness, such as positive (0.9%) and negative (1.8%) disrespect, police officers generally try to maintain polite communication and support positive relationships with the community. This study concludes that the application of language politeness by the police in dialogical patrols plays an important role in building positive relationships with the community and increasing public trust.

Abstract

Writing is a fundamental language skill that students must master in school-based learning. This study aims to develop a computer-based assessment system for evaluating Indonesian opinion articles, addressing the challenges teachers face in manual writing assessments. Utilizing the initial phases of research and development (R&D) with the ADDIE model, this study conducted a needs analysis through literature reviews, interviews, and questionnaires. Findings indicate the necessity of a computer-based writing assessment system incorporating both machine and human raters. The machine rater evaluates mechanical aspects and vocabulary (word count) using pre-processing techniques in Natural Language Processing (NLP), supported by an Indonesian vocabulary database and punctuation programming. Meanwhile, the human rater, an Indonesian language teacher, conducts assessments via an interactive interface. Testing by four teachers on 40 students revealed that 97.6% of teachers responded positively to the system’s assessment process. This research is particularly relevant in the post-COVID-19 era, highlighting the positive role of technology in advancing language education and information technology. The system can be adapted for assessing other language skills, such as reading, and for large-scale applications like the Indonesian language proficiency test.

Abstract

This study investigates vocabulary acquisition and the phenomenon of vocabulary spurt in a 24-month-old child, focusing on the interplay of cognitive abilities, memory, and understanding of word functions. The research aims to answer two primary questions: How do cognitive abilities and memory influence the vocabulary spurt in a 24-month-old child’s vocabulary acquisition? And to what extent does understanding word functions contribute to vocabulary development in a 24-month-old child? Utilizing a single-subject case study design, observational sessions were conducted over four weeks, capturing the child's verbal interactions and spontaneous speech in a supportive home environment. Data analysis combined quantitative measures of new word acquisition and qualitative assessments of contextual word usage. Findings revealed a significant vocabulary spurt, with the child averaging 3.5 new words per week, characterized by peaks in word acquisition and a predominance of nouns, followed by verbs and adjectives. The child effectively utilized words for requests, labeling, and expressing emotions, demonstrating a growing understanding of syntax. Cognitive milestones, such as object permanence and categorization, alongside social influences from parent-child interactions, were pivotal in vocabulary growth. The study underscores the importance of rich, interactive environments for language development, highlighting how consistent exposure to language through routines and social engagement fosters vocabulary acquisition. These insights contribute to developmental linguistics by elucidating the cognitive and social processes that underpin early language development, emphasizing the need for supportive language-rich contexts in early childhood education.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an English-speaking skills assessment rubric for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach in an inclusive school setting. The research involved 24 regular students and one student with mild ASD in the 7th grade at Sekolah Alam Bekasi, offering a comparison framework. However, children with ASD have unique cognitive, social, and communication needs that differ from neurotypical students. Comparisons must therefore be approached carefully, considering these differences. The study followed Borg & Gall's Research and Development (R&D) model, starting with a needs analysis, followed by product design, expert validation, product revision, and limited testing. Data was gathered through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The needs analysis revealed that both teachers and parents require a flexible, inclusive, and ASD-sensitive assessment tool, especially for evaluating verbal and non-verbal communication skills. The resulting rubric is based on the three UDL principles: Multiple Means of Engagement, Representation, and Action and Expression, with specific, measurable, and context-appropriate indicators. Content validation by three experts in special education, language assessment, and inclusive pedagogy produced Aiken’s V values between 0.85 and 0.95, indicating strong validity. A limited trial with five students with ASD demonstrated the rubric’s effectiveness in assessing individual speaking abilities and guiding teachers in providing adaptive interventions. By incorporating both verbal and non-verbal aspects like gestures and eye contact, the rubric offers a fairer and more holistic assessment for students with ASD.

Abstract

This study examines the empowerment strategies of Mee tribe mothers in Papua in teaching reading to primary school-aged children. The study uses the literature review method to analyse the challenges Mee students face in learning to read and identify effective approaches to improve their literacy skills. The results show that Mee students face various barriers, including limited access to education and language differences. Effective learning strategies include the use of syllable card media, game-based methods and the utilisation of educational technology. The involvement of parents, especially mothers, was found to be very important in supporting the development of children's reading skills. Creating a supportive learning environment at home and empowering mothers as educators can be an effective alternative in improving the reading skills of Mee children. This study recommends the development of a special training programme for Mee mothers, the provision of culturally appropriate learning resources, increased access to educational technology and collaboration between various stakeholders in developing a sustainable literacy programme. The implementation of these recommendations is expected to improve the reading skills of primary school-aged Mee students and empower mothers as important partners in their children's learning process.

Abstract

Drawing upon naturalistic data since the intake of English at the age of two, this longitudinal intrinsic case study examines the developmental trajectories of bilingual subject realization in an Early Second Language Acquisition (ESLA). Early bilingual exposure is widely recognized for its cognitive and linguistic benefits, yet challenges such as first language (L1) interference remain underexplored. This study focuses on a single child’s unique language learning journey which offers an in-depth exploration of how specific parental strategies, including exclusive use of English at home, curated media exposure, and interactive language use, contribute to the child reaching a CEFR B2 level by age seven. Despite the supportive language environment, this study identifies consistent patterns of L1 interference in areas such as syntax, word order, and morphology. Using qualitative analyses of spontaneous speech data, this study identifies recurring error patterns and their implications for bilingual language development. The findings emphasize the dual role of parental influence in fostering second language (L2) proficiency while also revealing structural challenges that necessitate personalized corrective strategies. This research offers practical insights for parents and educators in emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to mitigate L1 interference and optimize bilingual acquisition outcomes.
