Abstract

AbstractThis study investigates psycholinguistic perspectives on interaction patterns that facilitate meaning acquisition in BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing/Indonesian for Speakers of Other Languages) learning at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Employing a descriptive-analytic qualitative approach, the research examines how specific interaction patterns namely Student-Centered, Reciprocal, Collaborative, and Authentic Interactive support cognitive and linguistic processes in second language acquisition. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with two instructors and eight students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and thematic analysis of relevant teaching materials. The findings highlight the effectiveness of interactive and contextually enriched teaching strategies in improving students’ grasp of literal and contextual meanings, vocabulary mastery, and cultural competence. Drawing on Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development, this study emphasizes the importance of comprehensible input and scaffolding in fostering meaningful learning. The practical outcomes include recommendations for psycholinguistics-based teacher training programs and the design of interactive instructional materials tailored to the needs of culturally diverse learners. These findings contribute to advancing BIPA teaching practices and strengthening Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy initiatives. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find the effect of learning strategies (metacognitive and cognitive strategies) and personality (intrinsic and extrinsic personality) on Arabic listening skills. It was experiment research with experimental methods by factorial 2x2 design. It used a 2-way analysis variance design. The process of collecting data used questionnaires, tests, observations, and documentation. The results showed that there was a significant influence on Arabic listening ability with different personality levels. Personality differences in the application of listening learning strategies are closely related. Language learning varies depending on individual characteristics and variations in language learning outcomes associated with student characteristics. Cognitive and metacognitive strategies have a significant influence on the Arabic listening ability with different levels of personality types namely extrovert and introvert. Therefore, it can be concluded that different personalities will influence the level of different listening skills in Arabic. The results of the study recommend that the learning process of listening to Arabic using metacognitive and cognitive strategies can be varied with the concept of group learning and enrichment of vocabulary from the material presented.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate students' perspectives towards pre-service teachers' competencies in teaching during the teaching practice program and to investigate teachers' perspectives towards pre-service teachers' competencies in teaching during teaching. The type of this research is a descriptive quantitative ex post facto research design. The populations of this research are English teachers and Students of Senior high school who pre-service teachers taught. Eleven pre-service teachers teach in senior high schools in seven schools as the location of research. In taking the samples, researchers used total sampling for the teacher samples and purposive sampling technique for student samples by taking ten students from each pre-service teacher. The research result showed that students' perspective toward pre-service teachers' competency in teaching was excellent. It was also similar to the teachers' perspective toward pre-service teachers' competency in teaching. It means that the teaching practice program held by the University of Pasir Pengaraian, especially the English education study program, was successful.

Abstract

Drawing upon naturalistic data since the intake of English at the age of two, this longitudinal intrinsic case study examines the developmental trajectories of bilingual subject realization in an Early Second Language Acquisition (ESLA). Early bilingual exposure is widely recognized for its cognitive and linguistic benefits, yet challenges such as first language (L1) interference remain underexplored. This study focuses on a single child’s unique language learning journey which offers an in-depth exploration of how specific parental strategies, including exclusive use of English at home, curated media exposure, and interactive language use, contribute to the child reaching a CEFR B2 level by age seven. Despite the supportive language environment, this study identifies consistent patterns of L1 interference in areas such as syntax, word order, and morphology. Using qualitative analyses of spontaneous speech data, this study identifies recurring error patterns and their implications for bilingual language development. The findings emphasize the dual role of parental influence in fostering second language (L2) proficiency while also revealing structural challenges that necessitate personalized corrective strategies. This research offers practical insights for parents and educators in emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to mitigate L1 interference and optimize bilingual acquisition outcomes.

Abstract

Fostering creative thinking skills is a crucial objective within 21st-century education. This research applied content analysis to several articles published in Indonesian Applied Linguistics journals between 2014 and 2024, focusing on creative thinking as the central theme. The findings indicate a notable increase in the number of publications emphasizing creative thinking over the past four years, with qualitative research being the predominant methodology. Undergraduate students were the most frequently studied population, and a variety of materials were utilized in the research spanning the last decade. Questionnaires were the most commonly employed data collection tool, while thematic analysis was the most frequently used method for data interpretation. Based on these findings, several recommendations are offered for future research on creative thinking skills, including expanding the range of research designs and employing more refined data analysis techniques.

Abstract

This study examines the speech development of SY, a 3.5-year-old child with speech delay, living in a bilingual environment with early exposure to screen time. Through a case study approach, data was collected via observations, interviews with SY's mother and therapist, and therapy records. Initially, SY displayed significant speech limitations, including omitting sounds, using incomplete words, and having a limited vocabulary. Factors such as frequent screen exposure and reduced direct interaction were identified as potential contributors to SY's speech delay. After six months of Speech-Language Therapy (SLT) led by an experienced therapist, SY has shown improvements in word completion, clearer articulation, vocabulary expansion, and social engagement. However, challenges remain in maintaining SY's focus during therapy sessions, a common issue for children his age. The study underscores the importance of early intervention, reduced screen time, and increased face-to-face communication in managing speech delays. Findings suggest that a structured therapy approach combined with supportive family interactions can effectively foster language development in young children, even in bilingual settings, reinforcing the role of active parental involvement in enhancing communication outcomes.
