Abstract

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is widely recognized as an effective approach to developing students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, its implementation often encounters significant challenges, particularly in teachers’ ability to identify relevant contextual issues. This study investigates the perceptions and challenges faced by students in the Teacher Professional Education (TPE) Program in selecting and designing contextual issues for PBL. Using a sequential exploratory mixed-method design, the research began with a qualitative phase analyzing student assignments, followed by a quantitative phase involving questionnaires to assess perceptions and influencing factors. Results revealed that most TPE students have not yet fully developed the ability to select appropriate issues to serve as contexts in PBL. 90% of participants found it "Difficult" to identify relevant issues, while only 10% considered it "Easy." Among the factors contributing to these difficulties, limited knowledge of relevant issues (30%) was the most significant, followed by a lack of understanding of PBL concepts (23%) and difficulty connecting theory to practice (18%). Other barriers included limited access to resources (13%), time constraints (8%), and other minor reasons (8%). These findings emphasize the importance of structured and practical training programs to enhance teachers' competence in identifying contextual issues for PBL. The study concludes with recommendations for designing intensive professional development programs and highlights the need for further research with larger and more diverse samples to validate these findings.

Abstract

Happiness is a concept that is difficult to understand to this date. Differences in individual perspectives in interpreting happiness also affect the processing construct of the measurement. This study aims to conduct convergent validation of the existing happiness scale. Convergent validation can test how good the happiness scale is by comparing the externally to another scale that is considered to have a relationship. The happiness convergent-scale validation adapted the Multi-trait Multi-method (MTMM) analysis. Respondents involved in this study were 186 students from traditional Muslim schools or Santri who were selected according to the specified characteristics and studied at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The three measuring instruments used are the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ), the Indigenous Happiness Scale (IHS), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQOL-Bref). The correlation coefficient (r) shows values of 0.52 (OHQ-IHS), 0.53 (OHQ-WHOQOL-Bref), and 0.45 (IHS-WHOQOL-Bref). The result indicated that the correlation of the three scales tested has a statistically high relationship so that the three measuring instruments used have convergent validity and can be used to measure the construct of happiness.

Abstract

Research Problem: The religious teachings of ancestors, commonly referred to as "beliefs" in Indonesia, have existed since ancient times but face a dilemmatic position in the context of officially recognized religions. These local belief systems often encounter discrimination and marginalization, despite their coexistence with recognized religions. The tension between local beliefs and state-recognized religions highlights the ongoing challenges of religious tolerance and inclusivity in Indonesia. Research Purposes: This study aims to examine the existence and recognition of local religions within the framework of Indonesia’s official religious policies. It seeks to explore how local beliefs coexist with state-recognized religions and to understand the impact of legal recognition on reducing discrimination against adherents of these belief systems. Research Methods: The research employs qualitative methods to analyze the historical, sociocultural, and legal dynamics affecting local religions in Indonesia. It draws from case studies, legal documentation, and interviews to provide an in-depth understanding of the issue. Results and Discussion: The findings reveal that adherents of local religions often experience discrimination, stemming from their exclusion from official religious recognition. The Constitutional Court's decision No. 97/PUU-XIV/2016 marked a significant turning point, granting legal acknowledgment to local belief systems and addressing some aspects of discrimination. Despite these advances, tensions remain, but official religions generally promote tolerance and foster coexistence among diverse communities. Research Implications and Contributions: This study highlights the importance of fostering tolerance and inclusivity in multicultural societies. It contributes to understanding the challenges faced by local belief systems in Indonesia and underscores the need for policy and societal efforts to strengthen religious harmony. The findings also provide a foundation for further research on the interplay between legal recognition, religious diversity, and social cohesion.

Abstract

In the field of tourism, English serves as a global language of communication between tour guides and international tourists, as well as in relation to tourist attractions, culture, history, food, beverages, accommodations, transportation, souvenirs, services, and many other aspects. The needs analysis/assessment requires the synchronization of the demand (tourism users) and supply (English for tourism). In the Indonesian context, there has been an increasing market demand from the tourism sector for higher education institutions to provide their best graduates with relevant and aligned skills. This study investigates the industry's needs for English in the context of hotel and tourism courses. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, using both quantitative data from surveys and qualitative data from interviews. The results indicate that ten out of twelve topics in the English for Hotel and Tourism book of the English Education program at Universitas Terbuka are relevant to the respondents' occupations/industries. However, two topics were deemed by most respondents to be irrelevant to their jobs. For improvement, this study recommends that these two irrelevant topics be altered or modified.

Abstract

As a country with a majority Muslim population, Indonesia has strong foundations in religious teachings guiding daily life. However, social changes, technological advances, and globalization present challenges in ensuring character education remains relevant and adaptive. Islamic education in Indonesia is central to shaping individual character based on religious and ethical teachings. This study examines the potential of the Living Values Education (LVE) approach as an innovative mainstream in developing Islamic education in Indonesia. This research is a literature study, involving an in-depth analysis of relevant literature. The study shows that LVE provides a holistic approach covering ethical, moral, social, and emotional aspects. In the context of Islamic education, LVE can strengthen the understanding of religious teachings and associate them with universal virtues. The relevance of LVE lies in educators building learning dynamics based on positive character values. Thus, LVE becomes an innovative alternative in Islamic education, encouraging the creation of intelligent, moral, and creative generations for the nation's future.

Abstract

Research on academic integrity among final-year students preparing mini-theses is still limited in Indonesia, particularly in Islamic universities. Therefore, this research aimed to assess the influence of spirituality and supervisor support on academic integrity of final-year students at an Islamic university in Bandung. A correlational quantitative method was adopted focusing on the relationship between independent and dependent variables. Using a census method, data was collected from a total of 205 final-year students. The results showed that multiple regression analysis exhibited an F-value of 86.525 with a p-value < 0.05, implying the collective influence of spirituality and supervisor support on academic integrity by 46.1%. These observations showed that spirituality had a greater impact on academic integrity than supervisor support among participants. A detailed explanation of this research was provided in the subsequent sections.
