Abstract

Students' low numeracy skills in understanding integer concepts often lead to misconceptions that frequently undetected, as they are embedded within students' cognitive processes rather than solely visible in final answers. This study aims to detect students' misconceptions in integer topics by analyzing their thinking processes using Mason's framework, based on their numeracy levels. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, involving six seventh-grade students from class VII at MTsN 8 Muaro Jambi. The subjects were classified into three numeracy categories: high, medium, and low. Data were collected through think-aloud-based diagnostic tests, in-depth interviews, and observations during problem-solving sessions. Data were then analyzed using Mason’s stages of thinking. The results showed that all students experienced theoretical and correlational misconceptions, while classification misconceptions were found only among students with low numeracy levels. Most errors occurred in the attack and review stages. Mason’s thinking framework proved effective in systematically identifying the location and type of misconceptions and provides a foundation for designing more targeted and responsive numeracy-based instructional strategies.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to evaluate whether or not students in the eighth grade at SMP Negeri 2 Betara in the Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency can improve their mathematical critical thinking skills by using mobile learning that is based on problem-based learning (PBL). The participants in this research were all eighth-graders from one junior high school in the Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency. There were a total of 128 students included in this study, and they were distributed across four classes. The sample was selected from as many as two classes, specifically VIIIA with a total of 28 students serving as the experimental group and VIIIB with a total of 28 students serving as the control group. The analysis of the data reveals that the Zcount value is 10,099, and the significance value is 0.000< 0.005; these values were determined to be significant. Therefore, the working hypothesis or alternative hypothesis that was proposed in this study is accepted. It states that there is a difference in the average critical thinking of students who use PBL-based mobile learning compared to students who use standard teaching materials. While the null or nil hypothesis, which states that "there is no difference in the average critical thinking of students who use PBL-based mobile learning and students who use conventional teaching materials," is rejected.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' metacognitive abilities in solving mathematical problems based on information processing theory in Discrete Mathematics courses. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with a purposive sampling technique, involving two Mathematics Education students selected to represent the respondents' answer patterns. Data were collected through problem-solving tests using the think-aloud technique and unstructured interviews, then analyzed qualitatively with source triangulation. The results showed that both subjects were able to achieve the reflective use level on the first problem by going through all three stages of information processing. However, on the second problem, both only reached the strategy use level, with one subject experiencing pseudo in the thinking process. This finding confirms that students' metacognitive abilities vary depending on the complexity of the problem and the stages of information processing they go through. The implications of this study are the importance of developing learning strategies that encourage more consistent metacognitive regulation, as well as the opportunity to utilize technology such as eye-tracking or digital think-aloud tools to reveal students' thinking processes more objectively in future research.

Abstract

Numeracy literacy is one of the essential skills developed in mathematics learning, as it supports critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in daily contexts. However, many students still struggle to apply mathematical symbols and strategies effectively. This study aims to analyse students’ numeracy literacy skills in solving systems of linear equations in two variables (SPLDV) by considering reflective and impulsive cognitive styles through the assimilation and accommodation framework. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach with eighth-grade students at MTs N 2 Batang Hari as participants. Subjects were selected using the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT) to identify reflective and impulsive cognitive styles. Data were collected through numeracy literacy test questions, think-aloud protocols, and semi-structured interviews. Students’ responses were analysed based on indicators of numeracy literacy and their cognitive processes of assimilation and accommodation. The findings indicate that reflective students (R1 and R2) could analyse information accurately, employ mathematical symbols appropriately, construct SPLDV models, and conclude solutions logically. They predominantly demonstrated assimilation processes, showing careful and systematic reasoning. In contrast, impulsive students (I1 and I2) could identify information but struggled to use symbols and formal methods, often relying on guessing strategies. Their responses reflected accommodation processes, with lower accuracy and incomplete reasoning. In conclusion, reflective students achieved proficient numeracy and literacy skills, while impulsive students remained at a basic level. These results highlight the importance of tailoring instructional strategies to students’ cognitive styles to strengthen numeracy literacy competencies.

Abstract

Low motivation among students in learning mathematics, which is often viewed as abstract and disconnected from everyday life, remains a persistent challenge in Indonesian education. This study aims to develop and test the effectiveness of a 3D animated film based on ethnomathematics integrated with the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model to enhance students’ learning motivation and cultural appreciation. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach following Borg and Gall’s model through several stages: product design, expert validation, preliminary trials, field implementation, and operational evaluation. The participants consisted of junior high school students divided into control and experimental groups. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and learning motivation scales. The validation results indicated that the 3D animated film achieved a score of 82%, categorized as “good” and suitable for classroom implementation. Statistical analysis revealed a significant increase in learning motivation in the experimental group compared to the control group, as evidenced by higher pretest–posttest gain scores. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of 3D animation and ethnomathematics within the PjBL framework an innovative combination that contextualizes mathematical concepts through local cultural wisdom while promoting active, project-based engagement. This research contributes to the growing field of culturally responsive digital learning media by demonstrating that ethnomathematics-based animation not only enhances motivation but also bridges traditional cultural values with modern technological learning approaches, offering a scalable model for 21st-century mathematics education.
