Abstract

Rice production in acidic soils is often limited by leaf blast disease and iron (Fe) toxicity. This study aimed to identify local rice genotypes cultivated in Solok Selatan that are tolerant to leaf blast disease and iron stresses at the vegetative stage. Ten rice genotypes, consisting of six local genotypes and four comparison genotypes, were tested under three levels of soil Fe content (11,393.12 ppm, 16,781.83 ppm, and 18,699.25 ppm) using a Completely Randomized Design with three replications. The observed variables were number of tillers, root length, leaf blast score, and Fe toxicity score. The results showed that Batang Piaman had the highest number of tillers (72.00), while Guliang Tandai Merah and Batu Hampar Putih had the longest roots (50.67 cm and 49.78 cm). Guliang Tandai Merah had the lowest leaf blast score (2.89), and together with Batang Piaman, also showed low Fe toxicity scores (3.56 and 3.22), indicating good tolerance. In contrast, Simauang and IR64 were the most susceptible against iron toxicity compared to other rice genotypes. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) explained 81.80% of the total variation and placed Batang Piaman and Cilamaya Muncul in the quadrant of high tolerance and good agronomic traits. Cluster analysis grouped the genotypes into three major clusters, with Guliang Tandai Merah and Batu Hampar Putih forming a distinct group based on strong root traits. Although no genotype was completely resistant, Batang Piaman and Guliang Tandai Merah are promising candidates for breeding programs targeting leaf blast and Fe toxicity tolerance.

Abstract

This paper aims to conceptually and empirically examine the role of two-way communication between extension workers and farmers in accelerating the adoption of shallot innovations. Adoption of agricultural innovations is a strategic element in increasing the productivity and competitiveness of horticultural commodities, but its implementation in various production centers remains suboptimal. This situation indicates that the success of innovation is determined not only by technical excellence but also by the effectiveness of the accompanying communication process. Theoretically, Rogers explains that innovation adoption proceeds through five stages: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. At the persuasion and decision-making stages, two-way communication is crucial because farmers need a dialogue space to understand the benefits, risks, and suitability of the innovation for their farming conditions. This perspective is reinforced by Leeuwis, who asserts that agricultural innovation is the result of social construction through interaction, collective learning, and negotiation of meaning between actors. Thus, a dialogic and participatory extension approach is a prerequisite for effective innovation diffusion. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach through a case study in a shallot production center. The results indicate that innovation communication is relatively effective, particularly through face-to-face interactions such as field demonstrations and group discussions. Farmers who engage in intensive dialogue with extension workers have a more comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of innovations, make faster adoption decisions, and are more consistent in their implementation. Conversely, one-way extension services tend to lead to hesitation and delayed adoption. Communication effectiveness is influenced by the competence of extension workers, farmer characteristics, and the availability of adequate communication channels. Therefore, strengthening participatory communication capacity and developing a dialogic extension system are important strategies for accelerating the sustainable adoption of agricultural innovations.

Abstract

Abstract: Nagari Simpang, Pasaman Regency, is an agrarian area where maize is the main commodity, cultivated using conventional practices that rely heavily on hybrid seeds and inorganic fertilizers. In the long term, this pattern leads to increased production costs, declining soil fertility, and low added value of agricultural products. In addition, suboptimal household waste management contributes to environmental pollution. This community service program aimed to revitalize a sustainable maize farming system through the integration of composite maize seeds and organic waste processing technology. The program was conducted from July to November 2025, involving approximately 30 farmers. The methods included an initial survey, program socialization, training on organic fertilizer production, establishment of a composite maize demonstration plot, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test. Data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods. The results showed an increase in participants’ understanding of composite maize seeds and improved skills in producing organic fertilizer. Higher post-test scores (3-4,2) compared to pre-test (1-2) indicate the effectiveness of the training and mentoring approaches. Additionally, there was an increase in community awareness regarding the utilization of organic waste. This program contributed to enhancing farmers’ capacity and independence and serves as an initial step toward developing a sustainable agriculture system based on local resources.
