Brown rice is a highly nutritious rice widely consumed as the carbohydrate substitute of common rice. Brown rice resistance to biotic stress is one of indicators of a superior variety. Our study aimed to analyze the response of several brown rice genotypes from West Sumatra to brown planthopper attack and blast disease. This study comprised two experiments, the resistance assay to brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens (Stal.) and the resistance assay to blast fungi Pyricularia oryzae. The resistance assay to brown planthopper was done using randomized block design experiment with three replicates. Eighteen brown rice genotypes (15 brown rice, 2 black rice, and 1 control genotype) were tested in the assay. From 17 brown and black rice tested, 7 genotypes were resistant and 2 were moderately resistant. For blast resistance analysis, fifteen rice genotypes (13 brown rice and 2 black rice) were used. There was only 1 genotype highly resistant and 3 moderately resistant to blast disease among those 15 brown and black rice.

Abstract. Sari SP, Suliansyah I, Nelly N, Hamid H. 2022. Arthropods community on maize plantation in West Pasaman, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 3062-3072. Arthropods can be found on the surface of the soil and plant canopy. West Pasaman District is one of the centers of corn production in Indonesia. This study aimed to determine the abundance and the diversity of arthropods in Luhak Nan Duo Sub-district and Kinali Sub-district, West Pasaman District, West Sumatra District, Indonesia. The research was conducted using a purposive sampling technique from October to December 2020. The arthropods sampling was done by two techniques: yellow trap and modified vacuum technique. The identification process was conducted at the Insect Bioecology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Andalas, Padang, Indonesia. A total of 5477 arthropods were found in maize plantations in West Pasaman. The arthropods found were classified into two classes, 8 orders, 85 families, and 269 morphospecies. The individual number was dominated by the Insect class, reaching 97.09% (5318), while the Arachnida class was only 2.99% (159). Data were analyzed for the number of species (S), the number of individuals (N), Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H'), and Evenness index of species (J'). Regarding the location, Luhak Nan Duo has a higher number of individuals, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, and Evenness index than Kinali. However, the pattern of arthropod abundance in the two maize cultivation locations in West Pasaman was similar, increasing with the age of the maize plant. However, in general, the diversity values of arthropods in maize cultivation in Luhak Nan Duo and Kinali were more than 3. It means that the West Pasaman is still quite balanced and safe from the risk of damage due to pests because of the highest abundance of arthropods on maize plantations.

Abstract. Chaniago N, Suliansyah I, Chaniago I, Rozen N. 2021. Morphological characteristics of local rice in Deli Serdang District, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 883-894. The preservation of local rice is essential to preventing genetic drain. In Deli Serdang District, North Sumatra, Indonesia, local rice is in great abundance. A total of 23 Deli Serdang local rice were collected and studied from coastal to highland areas. This study aims to determine the morphological characteristics of 23 local rice genotypes of Deli Serdang and to obtain superior characters to be developed into superior local varieties. A completely randomized design with three replicates was used in this study. Morphological characteristics of 23 local rice genotypes obtained various characters. The culm length was short to very long; culm diameter was thin to thick; the leaf-blade length was long to very long; leaf-blade width was intermediate to broad; culm number was low to high. The auricle, ligule, and collar were almost completely whitish, except for Sijambi yellowish-green and green, 2-cleft acute ligule shape. The harvest age was medium to deep. The grains were white, straw, gold, brown, brown spots, brown lines, and black. The pericarps were white, light brown, red, and black. Most of the organs indicated broad genetic variability having the opportunity to be developed into superior local varieties. All local rice was scattered into five groups based on morphological markers with a similarity of 32.12%.

Abstract. Hidayatullah T, Suliansyah I, Swasti E, Putri NE, Mejaya IMJ. 2025. Evaluation of resistance in new hybrid maize genotypes to Northern leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum). Biodiversitas 26: 4967-4975. Northern Leaf Blight Disease (NLB), caused by Exserohilum turcicum, is a major foliar disease threatening maize (Zea mays) production in Indonesia. This study aimed to evaluate the resistance of 20 new hybrid maize genotypes developed by Universitas Andalas, along with two control varieties, against NLB. Field trials were conducted in West Sumatra using a randomized complete block design to assess disease resistance and agronomic traits. Multivariate analysis was used to assess 20 new hybrid maize genotypes. The collected data were examined across nine parameters: Plant Height (H), Ear Height (EH), Stem Diameter (SD), Dehusked Ear Weight (DEW), Harvest Moisture (HM), Grain Weight per Ear (GWE), 1000-grain Weight (W1000), Yield Potential (YP), and Northern Leaf Blight (NLB). Results showed that most of the hybrids demonstrated Resistance (R) to Moderate Resistance (MR), with genotypes G4-13, G15-16, G18, and G21 exhibiting high levels of resistance and stability. NLB severity showed significant correlations with all parameters except harvest moisture. Principal component analysis identified three components with eigenvalues greater than one, collectively explaining 86.53% of the total variance. The first two components alone accounted for 74.19% of the variance, highlighting their dominant role in discriminating among genotypes. Cluster analysis produced four clusters, such as cluster 1: G7, G12, G3, G14, and G17; Cluster 2: G10, G19, G2, G20; Cluster 3: G21, G6, G22; and the last, Cluster 4: G15, G8, G16, G9, G13, G18, G4, and G5. The findings indicate that G6 is suitable candidates for advancement to preliminary yield trials, combining superior yield potential with notable resistance to NLB. These outcomes provide practical guidance for breeding programs seeking to produce resilient and productive maize hybrids across variable agroclimatic settings.

Abstract

Taro is a viable source and holds potential as a supplement or substitute for rice/carbohydrates, as well as a raw material for flour production in the food industry. Taro plants possess significant economic value, as nearly all parts of the plant are edible. However, taro processing activities remain limited in terms of product variety, production continuity, target market, and marketing strategy. This programme aimed to enhance the understanding and skills of the partner in cultivating taro in accordance with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and to improve their capabilities in processing taro into various commercially viable products, as well as in packaging the resulting products. The activities were carried out at the 'Kita Bisa' Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME), located in Sido Makmur Village, North Sipora Sub-district, Mentawai Islands Regency, from July to November 2024. The methods employed included socialisation and technical assistance, focused on the priority issues identified within the partner MSME. Hands-on practice was also conducted, particularly in taro processing technology and product packaging techniques. The results demonstrated a notable improvement in understanding taro cultivation based on GAP, as well as enhanced skills and knowledge in processing taro into taro flour, taro cookies, and various-flavoured taro crisps. Additionally, there was a significant increase in the partner’s competence in packaging taro-based products. In conclusion, the programme was successfully implemented, resulting in measurable outputs that contributed to improvements in quality, quantity, and overall understanding among MSME members, spanning from cultivation to value-added product development.

Abstract

Ketergantungan Indonesia terhadap impor gandum terus meningkat dan berpotensi mengancam ketahanan pangan nasional. Kondisi lingkungan yang sesuai pertumbuhan gandum perlu dipelajari dalam rangka pengembangan gandum di Indonesia. Salah satu aspek yang perlu dikaji adalah kemampuan adaptasi gandum jika ditanam pada wilayah dengan iklim dan ketinggian tertentu. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi perbedaan karakter varietas gandum yang adaptif di dataran menengah dengan pendekatan karakter agro-fisiologi. Penelitian di laksanakan di dataran menengah (517 mdpl) Kecamatan Tanjung Raya, Kabupaten Agam, Sumatra Barat dan beberapa laboratorium Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Andalas. Varietas gandum yang digunakan yaitu empat varietas nasional (Nias, Selayar, Guri 5 Agritan dan Guri 6 Unand). Data karakter fisiologi disajikan secara deskriptif dan data pertumbuhan hasil dianalisis menggunakan uji F taraf 5%, apabila terdapat perbedaan nyata dilanjutkan dengan uji DNMRT. Hubungan antara karakter agro-fisiologi dianalisis menggunakan korelasi pearson taraf 5%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pengaruh yang berbeda nyata dan korelasi yang erat antar karakter agro-fisiologi beberapa varietas gandum di dataran menengah Sumatra Barat

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems are recognized as potential environments for microorganisms that produce antibiotics, owing to their distinct environmental features and high levels of microbial rivalry. The objective of this research was to extract and assess the antibacterial properties of Streptomyces species sourced from the mangroves within the Mandeh coastal ecosystem in West Sumatra, Indonesia, targeting specific pathogenic bacteria. Sediment samples were collected from three mangrove locations and processed using serial dilution and spread plate methods on International Streptomyces Project 2 (ISP-2) media. Data were analyzed descriptively based on the size of the inhibition zone formed against the tested bacteria. The results showed Streptomyces-like characteristics characterized by colony morphology and Gram staining. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using a disc diffusion test against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Cutibacterium acnes. A total of seventeen isolates exhibiting typical Streptomyces characteristics were obtained. The antibacterial test showed varying inhibitory activity among the isolates against the tested pathogens. The STMMI isolate showed the strongest inhibition against MRSA with an inhibition zone of 23.61 ± 0.62 mm and also showed considerable activity against C. acnes (16.64 ± 1.12 mm). Meanwhile, the STMML isolate showed the highest inhibition against E. coli ATCC 25922 with an inhibition zone of 17.06 ± 0.63 mm. Some isolates showed broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, while others showed selective inhibition against certain pathogens. In conclusion, mangrove sediments from the Mandeh coastal ecosystem harbor a variety of Streptomyces with promising antibacterial potential. This study highlights the importance of Indonesian mangrove ecosystems as a potential reservoir of bioactive microorganisms for future antibiotic discovery.

Abstract

The potato processing industry in Indonesia continues to face high market demand, while domestic production remains insufficient (reaching only 1.22 million tons in 2023), resulting in dependence on imported raw materials. The expansion of industrial potato cultivation in medium-altitude regions offers considerable potential due to land availability; however, it is constrained by high-temperature stress, requiring varieties that are both tolerant and high yielding. This study aimed to evaluate the growth response and yield performance of three industrial potato varieties Ventury Agrihorti (local), Atlantik (introduced), and Bliss/Chitra (introduced) under two contrasting altitude conditions: medium altitude (600 masl) and high altitude (1500 masl). The experiment employed a Split Plot Design, with observations covering growth parameters, yield components, and tuber quality indicators, including tuber specific gravity (SG). The results revealed a significant interaction between altitude and variety on several parameters, such as plant height, specific leaf weight, number of tubers, and tuber weight per plant. At medium altitude (600 masl), the Atlantik variety demonstrated the best performance, achieving a productivity of 40.39 t/ha with the highest tuber weight. However, Atlantik produced a high proportion of oversize tubers (41.97%), which does not meet industry grading standards. Conversely, at high altitude (1500 masl), Bliss/Chitra showed superior yield performance with a productivity of 42.96 t/ha, followed by Ventury at 38.46 t/ha. Ventury and Bliss/Chitra also excelled in tuber size distribution, producing the majority of tubers (approximately 94–95%) within the Normal category (Ø 4.5–9 cm), which aligns with industrial processing requirements in both altitude conditions. The specific gravity (SG) values of all three varieties ranged from 1.08 to 1.09, indicating compliance with the minimum quality threshold for potato processing industries (>1.08).
