Abstract

Integration of technology in the teaching and learning process brings innovation where a learning process can be conducted virtually despite time and place boundaries. Online learning as the integration of learning and technology is used as the primary strategy to continue the teaching and learning process due to the Covid-19 outbreak. This study aims to analyze student perceptions of online learning before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The results showed that the students had negative and positive perceptions of online learning before and during the pandemic. Before the pandemic, the students emphasized exploring the materials, while the students emphasized flexibility in learning during the pandemic. Meanwhile, negative perceptions are shown through the loss of direct communication between teachers and students. During the pandemic, students emphasized the flexibility aspect of the online learning mode. However, negative perceptions also emerged, namely the abundance of online tasks and the difficulties of using e-learning. Various challenges of online learning were also found during the pandemic compared to before the outbreak. For example in addition to inadequate internet connections and gadgets, anxiety problems due to the workload and less appropriate learning plan also arose. It can be seen that online learning before and during the outbreak experienced dynamics, so teachers and students must be encouraged to be more adaptive in dealing with changes in their learning.

Abstract

In supporting learning for Deaf or Hard of Hearing/DHH children, it is not easy finding learning sources that are accessible online, especially in English. Furthermore, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when learning was required to be carried out online, there were no learning applications that included English sign language that could be used by teachers and students as learning media. Thus, this study aims to analyze the need for developing multimedia-based English learning materials for Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) children. This qualitative study involved DHH students and instructors in Special School (SLB), Bali. The need analysis was conducted to identify the ongoing situation of DHH children in the context of developing English multimedia learning materials. Interview and observation techniques applying two types of instruments in the form of an interview guide and field notes were used to collect the information towards the English learning needs for DHH children. The results of the study identified several needs that underlie the development of English multimedia learning materials, namely inadequate English instructors, text-based teaching materials, and the less than optimal teaching and learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the development of multimedia-based English learning materials is needed.

Abstract

Kahoot! is an individual and collaborative gamified learning platform that encourages curiosity, promotes lifelong learning, and makes learning enjoyable. Given the numerous advantages of using Kahoot! in language acquisition, several academic institutions have included gamification to enhance their learning experience. However, there are always issues and hurdles encountered throughout technology deployment. The present study aimed to analyze how the teacher implements Kahoot! in Japanese learning, the Indonesian high school teachers and students' perceptions of using Kahoot! and the constraints they encountered in using Kahoot! The study was designed as qualitative research, enrolling one Japanese language teacher and 34 students in a state senior high school. Semi-structured interviews, non-participatory observation, and a mixed questionnaire were used to collect data. Despite specific problems in the teacher's implementation of Kahoot!, the research indicated that both the teacher and the students had an "excellent" impression of the platform, with a poor internet connection being recognized as the biggest stumbling block to their utilizing Kahoot! efficiently. While Kahoot! may be a realistic alternative for inspiring high school students to learn Japanese, it requires a solid internet connection to guarantee that the learning process runs well.

Abstract

Technological advancements necessitate adaptation in the field of education, particularly for language teachers. This need cannot simply be accommodated in the classroom. In the process of adopting technology, teachers experience various processes that must be got through. This current study was aimed at filling the gap in the issues related to the complexity of MALL adoption in higher education. To fill the need for descriptive richness and picture the entire adoption process, a qualitative approach was used; specifically, Narrative Inquiry (NI). There was a total of three people who participated in the research. Data was gathered through the use of a narrative frame, an empty box, and a structured interview guide. The study's findings highlight the simultaneous and ongoing nature of the adoption process. Three distinct phases of adoption were identified by this research: acceptance (before use), usage (during use), and confirmation (after use), with three distinct evaluation procedures for each phase. Another important finding is that intention is not necessarily a drive to usage. There is review process that bridges the intention and usage. The process of intention and review are simultaneous. Nevertheless, whereas intention is likely immediate, the review takes longer period of decision making. The review process could be the answer to the debate in TAM studies related to the reasons of inconsistency of the intention to use to the usage.
