Abstract

Soil acidity is one of the main factors limiting the growth and sustainable production of oil palm in Indonesia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of various exogenous compounds on improving fruit growth and oil yield of palm oil grown on Ultisol. The experiment employed three treatments which were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments were: 1-MCP (0, 100, 200, and 300 ppm), CaCl2 (0 and 50 ppm) and NAA (0 and 200 ppm). Application of Ca2+, NAA and 1-MCP either single or in combination improved fruit growth and oil yield by increasing almost all variables, except the number of bunches, bunch weight and fruit set. The 100 ppm 1-MCP + 50 ppm Ca2+ + 200 ppm NAA treatments showed the highest oil-to-dry mesocarp content. To get the highest oil to bunch (OB), the combination of 100 ppm 1-MCP + 200 ppm NAA; 50 ppm Ca2+ + 200 ppm NAA, and a single treatment of 50 ppm Ca2+ were very promising to be utilized.

Abstract

Aluminum (Al) toxicity is the main yield-limiting factor for maize growing on acid soils of tropical regions. This experiment was conducted to screen maize (Zea mays L) genotypes under Al stress in culture solution. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots were Al concentrations (0, 2.5, 5 10, 20, and 40 ppm Al), and the sub plots were 22 maize genotypes. The results indicated that the genotype AMATL-(HS).C2, SATP-(S2)-C6-S0, MRSS-1(S1).C1-29-1, and MRSS-1(S1).C1-57-1  were more tolerant to Al-toxicity than the other genotypes including Antasena. The growth of Al-tolerant genotypes under low concentration of Al (2.5 ppm Al) was stimulated. The Concentration of 5 - 10 ppm Al in nutrient solution was adequate to separate genotypes between tolerant and sensitive genotypes in screening maize genotypes under Al stress. Relative net root length and relative root length were the best variable to be used as Al-tolerance indicators.   Key words: Maize, Al-tolerance,   Al-toxicity

Abstract

High-yielding variety is one of the targets in soybean breeding program. High-yielding variety could be developed through simultaneous selection. Simultaneous selection  using selection index was more efficient  than selection based on an individual trait only.  Objective of  the research was to select agronomic characters for construction selection index  on 11 soybean populations F6 generation based on correlation analysis, path analysis, and heritability.  The correlation analysis  showed that  number of branch,  number of total nod, number of filled pod, number of unfilled pod, number of total pod, and percentage of filled pod have positively and significantly correlated with  yield per plant.  Based on  path analysis, characters number of branch, number of unfilled pod, and number of filled pod have positive direct on yield per plant.   The result also showed that  number  of filled pod has maximum positive direct effect on yield per plant.  Generally, number of total nod, number of filled pod, number of total pod, and percentage of filled pod have higher heritability  than other characters.   Key words: Soybean, correlation, path analysis, heritability, selection index

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to identify the leaf morpho-physiological characters as markers for adaptation of soybean to low light intensity. The field experiment was conducted using split plot design with 3 replications. First factor was soybean genotype consisted of shade tolerant genotypes (Ceneng, Pangrango) and sensitive genotypes (Godek, Slamet). Second factor was low light intensity consisted of: L0 = control (under full sun light), L1 = 5 days under 50% shading (exposed after 21 days after planting/DAP), L2 = 5 days under dark condition (exposed after 21 DAP), L3 = 3 days 50% shading + 5 days sun light (exposed after 18 DAP), dan L4 = 3 days 50% shading + 3 days sun light + 5 day dark conditions (exposed after 15 DAP). The 50% shading was made artificially using black plastic paranet with 50% light transmitted. Results of this study showed that under the conditions of low light intensity, leaf morpho-physiological characters of soybean that could be used as markers for adaptation were leaf area, specific leaf weight, and chlorophyll content. Leaves of shade tolerant genotypes were wider and thinner and also contained higher chlorophyll especially for chlorophyll b than that of shade sensitive genotypes under low light intensity.   Key words :  Low light intensity, tolerant genotype, leaf area, chlorophyll, specific leaf weight

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the inheritance pattern of soybean adaptation to shade stress based on leaf morpho-physiological characters. Genetic materials used in this study consisted of 22 plants of low irradiance (LI)-tolerant genotype (Ceneng) and 22 plants of LI-sensitive genotype (Godek); 21 plants of F1 (Ceneng x Godek); and 114 plants of F2 populations (derived from F1). These populations were planted under shading of paranet 50%. The population was arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with two replicates. Analysis of inheritance of soybean adaptation involved estimation of heritability (broad sense) and gene action. Results of this study showed that: adaptation of soybean to low light stress based on characters of yield per plant was highly heritable (68% of broad sense) with partial dominant mode of action. Characters of leaf area and specific leaf weight were highly (68% of broad sense) and moderately (48% of broad sense) heritable, respectively, with additive mode of action. Soybean adaptation based on leaf physiological characters (chlorophyll contents) was highly heritable (70% - 86% of broad sense) in epistatic mode of action.   Key words:  Soybean, leaf morpho-physiological character, heritability, gene action

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the tolerant and susceptible soybean genotypes to drought stress. Twenty two genotypes were tested on three levels of drought stress, based on soil moisture conditions: 80% of field capacity (FC ), 60% FC and 40% FC. The experiment was conducted in plastic house at the experimental field of Meteorological Station, Sampali, Medan, from February to May 2000. The results show that increasing on the severity of drought caused significantly reduced growth and yields, which indicated by the reduction on shoot dry weight, stem diameter, filled pod number, seed number/plant and seed dry weight. The level of growth and yield reductions varied 1 among genotypes. The highest variation was shown at the drought level of 60% FC. Sindoro and Lokon were selected as tolerant and susceptible genotypes, consecutively. It was concluded that the adaptation of tolerant plants strongly related to their ability to improve the root system and to reduce the transpiration surfaces. Key words: Soybean, Drought, Tolerant, Susceptible

Abstract

A study was conducted to reevaluate 15 upland lines previously selected in a field experiment and nutrient culture experiment or tolerance to aluminum toxicity and potassium efficiency in the plastic house of Center for Crop Improvement Studies, Tajur, Bogor. The experiment was conducted in pot culture using Red Yellow Podzolic soil from Jasinga, Bogor. Two level of AI stress (no AI stress and AI stress with pH 4.8, Al saturation 80%, and exchangeable Al 16.6 mei/IOOg) and two levels of potassium fertilizer (6 kg K2Olha and 60 K2Olha) were applied. The study showed that the upland rice lines performed poorer under AI-tress condition compared to under non stress condition in plant heigl at harvest, total number of  tiller, number of productive tiller, length of spikelet and grain weight/pot. The performance of the upland rice lines was also significantly different under different level of potassium fertilizer in total number off tiller and nun1ber of productive tiller. Lines that showed significant difference in its performance under AI-stress and non stress condition were consiidered as tolerant lines. The result showed that Lalantik Bamban, Sigundil,CT65 I 0-24-3- I, Hawara Bunar, Ketombol, and Grogol were classified as AI-tolerant and K-efficient lines. Key word: Upland rice, Aluminium, Potasium

Abstract

An experiment was conducted at Muara Experimental Station, Research Institute of Food Crops Biotechnology, Bogor, from October 1996 to January 1997. Split block design was used in this experiment. Factors of experiment consisted of time of fertilizer application (3 week after planting (wap), 3 and 5 wap, and 3, 5, and 7 wap) and method of N fertilizer application (100% fertilizer through soil; 75% through soil, 25% through leaves; 50% through soil, 50% through leaves; 25% through soil, 75% through leaves; and 100% through leaves). Result of experiment showed that N application at 3 and 5 wap with 50% through soils and 50% through leaves increased dry weight to 11.4% if compared to 100% N through foliar application. Time of N application to 7 wap increased empty pod/plant to 31%. Method of N fertilizer application through leaves damaged the soybean leaves.   Key word: Fertilization, Nitrogen, Soybean
