Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from abnormalities in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Management of DM involves pharmacological therapy, nutritional intervention, and physical activity. Recently, adjuvant therapies based on functional foods containing probiotics and natural bioactive compounds have gained increasing attention, one of hich is Soygurt. When combined with mung beans and date juice as a natural sweetener, soygurt has the potential to improve glucose metabolism and influence body weight. This study aimed to analyze the effects of mung bean soygurt with date palm extract as an adjuvant therapy in a type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) mouse model, focusing on body weight and fasting blood glucose levels. The research employed a pre-posttest control group experimental design using male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced with T2DM. A total of 30 rats were divided into six groups: healthy control, negative control, positive control (metformin 9 mg/kgBW/day), and three treatment groups receiving different doses of soygurt (1 ml, 2 ml, and 3 ml) combined with metformin for 28 days. The results showed a significant increase in body weight across all groups (p < 0.05), and a significant decrease in fasting blood glucose in the positive control and treatment groups (P1, P2, P3) (p < 0.05). Conclusion, the study shows that mung bean soygurt with date extract has the potential as an adjuvant therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Date seeds (Phoenix dactylifera L.) are by-products of the date processing industry that are often discarded, even though they contain potential antioxidant compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of methanolic extract from date seeds as a sustainable approach to valorizing food waste. The research was conducted at the Laboratory of the Center for Food and Nutrition Studies, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Date seeds were obtained from small-scale food industries in Klaten, Central Java, then cleaned, dried, macerated, and sieved through mesh 80. A total of 50 grams of powdered seeds were extracted using the Soxhlet method with methanol for 6 hours. The antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH method by reading the absorbance at 515 nm. The results showed DPPH radical inhibition percentages of 58.87% and 48.75% in two replications, with an average of 53.81%. The data were analyzed descriptively based on the percentage of radical scavenging activity. These findings suggest that date seeds possess considerable antioxidant activity and can be utilized as a natural antioxidant source, while also supporting the upcycling of local food waste into functional food ingredients.

Abstract

Murraya koenigii (curry leaf) is a tropical plant known for its diverse phytochemical content and potent antioxidant activity. However, limited studies have provided comprehensive quantitative data on its bioactive compounds, especially from Indonesian varieties. This study aimed to quantitatively analyze flavonoid, saponin, and tannin content in young and mature curry leaves and evaluate their in vitro antioxidant activity using the DPPH assay. An experimental design was conducted from January to March 2025. Ethanolic extracts of young and mature M. koenigii leaves from Aceh were prepared via maceration. Phytochemical quantification was performed using spectrophotometric methods, and antioxidant capacity was assessed using the DPPH radical scavenging assay with IC₅₀ determination. Young leaves showed higher levels of total flavonoids (0.19%), saponins (3.34%), and tannins (5.77%) compared to mature leaves (0.13%, 2.53%, and 4.58%, respectively). However, mature leaf extract exhibited stronger antioxidant activity with an IC₅₀ value of 46.77 μg/mL (very strong category), while young leaves showed 53.14 μg/mL (strong category). This suggests that antioxidant efficacy is influenced more by compound maturity and synergistic effects than total concentration. Mature M. koenigii leaves have superior antioxidant potential despite lower phytochemical concentrations, highlighting the importance of compound quality and interactions between compounds.

Abstract

The rising global prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) highlights the urgent need for plant-based therapeutic alternatives. Spatholobus littoralis Hassk, locally known as Bajakah, is a traditional medicinal plant from West Kalimantan, Indonesia, that is widely used by indigenous communities for regulating blood sugar levels. This study aimed to characterize the proximate and phytochemical composition of Bajakah wood extract and evaluate its antidiabetic potential in rats induced with a high-fat diet (HFD) and Streptozotocin (STZ). The extraction was performed using a 70% ethanol maceration method. Proximate analysis revealed low moisture (4.57%), ash (0.54%), total fat (0.81%), and protein (0.41%), with carbohydrates being the most abundant component (6.67%). Phytochemical screening using UV-Vis spectrophotometry identified total phenols (12.98%), flavonoids (1.16%), tannins (1.65%), and saponins (0.13%). The in vivo test on diabetic rats showed that the administration of Bajakah extract at a dose of 150 mg/kg body weight (BW) for 14 days significantly reduced fasting blood glucose levels from 279.46 ± 2.39 mg/dL to 115.62 ± 13.73 mg/dL (P= 0,028), corresponding to a 58,6% reduction. This reduction was greater than that of the positive control group, which was treated with Acarbose. The high content of phenolics and other bioactive compounds is strongly suggested to contribute to the antihyperglycemic effect through antioxidant mechanisms, inhibition of digestive enzymes, and enhancement of insulin sensitivity. This study these findings support the therapeutic potential of Bajakah wood extract from West Kalimantan as a complementary agent for management of T2DM.
