Abstract

Antioxidants are the properties of active compounds that can prevent the formation or binding of free radicals and other molecules and inhibit oxidation reactions. Secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) and Gotu kola (Centella asiatica L.) are plants that contain lots of phytochemical compounds used as traditional drinks such as steeping drinks to date. Combining several natural ingredients is believed to provide more benefits and a more effective dosage if used properly. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of secang wood and gotu kola and their combinations (1:1, 2:1, 1:2) based on the IC50 value with various concentrations and replication 3 times for each sample from the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Ascorbic acid was also used as a positive control for this assay. Secang wood and gotu kola were extracted using maceration method with 96% ethanol as solvent. The results showed that the IC50 antioxidant activity of 34.173 ppm of secang wood ethanol extract was more active (very strong) compared to 160.236 ppm of gotu kola extract (weak). The best combination of ethanol extract mixture of secang wood and gotu kola which resulted in the strongest activity among the three combinations was a 1:1 ratio of 59.431 ppm (strong).

Abstract

Obesity is a complex and severe problem whose prevalence has increased significantly in the last few decades, posing a significant risk to human health. Various weight loss strategies are currently used, and different weight loss supplements are widely available. However, the effectiveness of some of these food supplements is still unknown. Thus, alternative therapy with a pharmaconutrition macronutrient approach is needed. A scoping review is necessary to scope the current article, summarize the scientific data, and guide future investigation into the potential use of catechin-rich gambir for obesity management. Results: Four databases were searched systematically. The scoping review covered articles published after 2013. A total of 251 articles were collected, and five studies (2 experimental studies) met the inclusion criteria. The synthesis results show that catechin-rich gambir has the potential a function in obesity management therapy. This mechanism, through the anti-obesity effect of catechins, is related to the uptake and synthesis of adipose tissue in obese individuals. Conclusions: Available evidence recommends that the catechin content in gambir has the potential for pharmaconutrition therapy for obesity management.

Abstract

Hyperglycemia in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM) can cause oxidative stress, among others, characterized by high levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). This situation continues to cause various complications. Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) is known to contain various antioxidants that can reduce blood glucose levels and oxidative stress levels in DM. This study aims to prove the effectiveness of pumpkin in the form of an extract to reduce fasting blood glucose (FBG)and MDA levels in DM rats. The study used 36 male Wistar rats which were divided into 6 groups, namely:KN:normal group;K(-):DM group;K(+):DM group was given glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kgBW/day;P1,P2,P3:DM group which was given the extract with a successive dose of 0.66mg/kgBW/day,1.32mg/200gBW/day,and 2.64mg/200gBW/day.The extract was administered for 21 consecutive days. The DM model was made by induction of streptozotocin (STZ) and nicotinamide (NA). FBG and MDA levels were measured serially 5 times and analyzed statistically. The results showed that the higher the dose of the extract and the longer the administration of the extract, the more effective the extract's ability to reduce blood FBG and MDA levels. Compared to glibenclamide, pumpkin extract was no less effective in reducing blood FBG and MDA levels. It was concluded that pumpkin extract was effective in lowering blood glucose and MDA levels in DM rats. Abstract

Adolescent girls can avoid anemia by maintaining stable hemoglobin levels and consuming foods rich in nutrients and high in iron. Food sources with high iron content that can increase hemoglobin levels include Tempeh and Moringa. Tempeh and Moringa are notable sources of iron. Tempeh provides nutrients such as Fe, vitamin B12, and folic acid, while Moringa leaves contain 28.66 g of protein, 929.29 mg of calcium, 715.22 mg of phosphorus, 9.99 g of iron, and 2.32 mg of zinc per 100 g. This study investigated the effect of Moringa tempeh burgers on hemoglobin levels in anemic teenage girls. Using a quasi-experimental design, 51 anemic girls aged 13-15 were divided into three groups: a control group (K) given tempeh burgers without Moringa, treatment group 1 (P1) given tempeh burgers with 3g of Moringa leaf flour, and treatment group 2 (P2) given tempeh burgers with 12g of Moringa leaf flour. Each group included 17 participants who consumed the assigned burgers for 30 days. Results showed the average hemoglobin level changes before and after the intervention were 0.46 g/dl in K, 0.70 g/dl in P1, and 2.23 g/dl in P2. Statistical tests confirmed significant differences in hemoglobin levels pre- and post-treatment across all groups. The study concluded that Moringa tempeh burgers, particularly those with the highest amount of Moringa leaf flour, were most effective in increasing hemoglobin levels in anemic adolescent girls.

Abstract

Background: Preeclampsia can lead to maternal and fetal complications due to its ability to cause multiple organ disorders. Interestingly, N-terminal pro-brain-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels were higher in preeclampsia than in non-preeclampsia, representing cardiovascular mal¬function as the potential cause. Moreover, NT-proBNP also has a potential role in predicting complications that will arise in preeclampsia. This systematic review was performed to determine the role of NT-proBNP plasma levels in predicting maternal and fetal complications in preeclampsia.Subjects and Method: This systematic review was conducted based on PRISMA-P by previous observational study from scientific databases, namely Hinari, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and grey literature in OCLC’s OAISTER between 2006 and 2021. The search keyword used were ((NTproBNP) OR (NT-proBNP) OR (N-terminal pro-BNP) OR (N-terminal pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide)) AND ((preeclampsia) OR (pre-eclampsia)) AND (pregnancy complications). Newcastle - Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS) was used to assess quality of included studies. Results: After study selection, five studies from 156 studies were considered eligible and selected in this systematic review. The results showed that pre-eclampsia complications occurred with NT-proBNP levels above 500 mg/dL, which cardiovascular complications may occurred above 700 mg/dL. NT-proBNP levels were higher in women with maternal complications such as placental abruption, HELLP (Hemolysis, elevated liver enzyme levels, and low platelet levels) syndrome, eclampsia, pulmonary oedema, congestive heart failure, cerebrovascular accident, renal dysfunction, and hypertensive retinopathy. Furthermore, increased NT-proBNP levels were associated with fetal growth restriction, resulting in low birth weight. NT-proBNP was significantly higher in pregnant women due to a combination of pre-existing volume overload and NT-proBNP clearance dysfunction in kidney. Conclusion: NT-proBNP levels were associated with adverse outcomes in preeclampsia. NT-proBNP serum levels could be used to predict maternal-fetal complications in preeclampsia.

Abstract

Stunting is one of a nutritional problems. Mackerel contains high protein which is important for growth. Moringa leaves contain high calcium and iron to overcome stunting. However, these two ingredients are very low in utilization as food ingredients so food diversification is carried out by making nuggets that are popular with children. The goal of this study was to determine the acceptability and nutritional value of mackerel nuggets with the addition of moringa leaf flour for stunting children in West Nias Regency. This type of research was experimental with organoleptic and proximate test. The treatment is moringa flour addition of 3%, 5%, 7%. Data were analyzed with One Way ANOVA followed by Duncan's and using Kruskal Wallis followed by the Mann-Whitney test if the data did not meet one of the conditions for the Anova test. The hedonic test results showed that there was a significant difference in aroma (p=0.033), taste (p=0.001), and texture (p=0.043) but no effect on color (p=0.639). The nutritional value test results showed that there was an effect of moringa leaf addition on the moisture content (p=0.016), ash (p=0.001), protein (p=0.001), fat (p=0.001), carbohydrate (p=0.024), calcium (p=0.001), and iron (p=0.001) of mackerel nuggets. Moringa flour addition influenced the liking of aroma, taste, and texture but had no effect on aroma and was well received by children's panelists in the category of “like” with F1 with the highest acceptance. Moringa flour addition influenced the protein, calcium, and iron levels with the highest levels in F3.
