Abstract

Writing an abstract in a research article is very important. The existence of abstract is compulsory in a research article. It is a research summary that must be attached and presented with the article. This study aims to identify moves and the most common pattern in RA abstracts in linguistic and language journals with different quartiles level. By using descriptive qualitative method, eighty RA abstracts of linguistic and language education journals with different quartile level were extracted from eight journals. The result finding; 1) Move 2 (Aim/Purpose) exists in seventy RA abstracts, Move 3 (Method) is present in sixty two RA abstracts, and Move 4 (Finding/Result) appears in Seventy Eight RA abstracts. In contrast, Move 1 (Introduction) is found in only 50 RA abstracts, and Move 5 (Conclusion) appears in 31 RA abstracts. 2) Q1 journal have the most frequent move, indicating a more comprehensive and detailed structure in their abstracts. In contrast, journals in lower quartiles, such as Q3 and Q4, often feature abstracts with fewer moves. As this study focuses only on the rhetorical move and pattern of RA abstract in field of linguistic and language journal with different quartile level, future research should conduct a comparative study and language features of the RA abstract in the field of across discipline with different quartile level.

Abstract

Integrating CTL and OBE in teaching English as a foreign language is possible to apply in the university context since both approaches are based on a student-centered approach and focus on outcomes as authentic assessment. This research was conducted to find out the implementation of integrating CTL and OBE in the English Morphology class. The students of the 3rd semester acted as the subject of the research. The implementation of CTL in the teaching and learning process included the components of constructivism, inquiry, asking, learning community, reflection, and authentic assessment. The OBE result was based on students' projects, which were measured by observing students' knowledge and performance through presentation. The result revealed that integrating CTL and OBE in English Morphology class consequently eases the students to comprehend the concept of morphology as realized from the student project. It can be concluded that integrating CTL and OBE in teaching theoretical subjects in a higher education EFL context affects the students positively. Further research with different approaches to the research is suggested to be conducted. Keywords: CTL, OBE, Integrating, English Morphology Course

Abstract

This study explores the representation of cultural contexts in the English for Change textbook, a key resource for senior high school students under Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum. The research investigates how target, source, and international cultures are portrayed, assessing their role in fostering intercultural communication skills. Using qualitative content analysis, supported by quantitative insights, the study applies frameworks to evaluate cultural content. The textbook achieves a numerical balance on target culture (32%), source culture (36%), and international culture (32%). However, it lacks depth in cultural exploration. Target culture often centers on basic practices, source culture is fragmented, and international culture tends to focus on global challenges rather than meaningful intercultural exchanges. Themes such as environmental awareness, digital literacy, and financial management dominate, but opportunities for critical cultural dialogue are largely missed. These findings reveal that the textbook while promising, falls short of fully supporting students’ intercultural competence due to superficial coverage and underrepresentation of minority cultures. The study highlights the need for richer, more inclusive cultural narratives, such as case studies and reflective tasks, to encourage deeper understanding and critical thinking. By addressing these gaps, educators and curriculum developers can create materials that better align with the Merdeka Curriculum’s vision of contextual and meaningful learning. Furthermore, this study contributes to English language education by emphasizing the role of cultural representation in fostering students' intercultural competence, which is essential for effective communication in global context.

Abstract

The discussion section is the portion of the thesis that presents the research findings by demonstrating an in- depth understanding of the findings, interpreting the findings, and emphasizing their contribution to current knowledge. Additionally, the discussion section is the most difficult component of the thesis. This study sought to identify the most prevalent grammatical errors and their causes in the discussion sections of theses written by English Education postgraduate students at the University of Bengkulu. This study analyzed its data using a mixed methodology. The majority of grammatical problems were investigated quantitatively, while their causes were investigated qualitatively. This study's corpus consisted of thirty master's theses written by English postgraduates who graduated in 2021. The findings revealed that incorrect verbs comprised 65.4%, or 121, of the grammatical errors found in the discussion section of the thesis. These errors were dominated by tense confusion and subject-verb agreement. First-language interference caused the grammatical errors found in the discussion section of the thesis. This study's conclusion provides information about the most common grammatical errors and their possible causes in the thesis discussion section in order to raise the writer's awareness of the significance of grammatical writing in this section.

Abstract

The textbooks published in the Merdeka curriculum edition have been prepared based on the Pancasila Student Profile to strengthen Pancasila-based character education. However, English textbooks published by different publishers tend to display western cultural values which can contribute to reducing the character values of Pancasila. For this reason, this research was carried out with the aim of finding out how far the values of the Pancasila student profile are integrated in English textbooks, and to find out teachers' views on books that integrate the values of the Pancasila Student Profile. This research used mixed methods with data sources from two Merdeka curriculum English textbooks are Bahasa Inggris;Tingkat lanjut and Pathway to English for class XI high school and 3 English teachers who used English books published by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Erlangga publisher. The research instrument is document analysis checklist prepared based on a grid of results from the six values of the Pancasila Student Profile and interviews about Pancasila values which have been integrated in the book used. The results of quantitative research show that books published by the Ministry of Education and Culture are integrated (72%) and books published by Erlangga are very integrated 81%). The most prominent integrated value in each book is the Critical Thinking dimension which is most prominent, especially in the exercise section. Meanwhile, the independent dimension is the least integrated. Second, the results of teacher interviews show that the highest percentage of integrated Pancasila profile values of students are in the dimensions of faith, fear of god almighty, and noble morals in the second book already presents how students should, by writing letters of gratitude and folk tales about disbelief while in the independent dimension the lowest percentage of integration, this is because the integration of Pancasila student profile values is less concrete and less varied in the application of Self and Situation Understanding and Self-Regulation in everyday life. In conclusion, the integrated scores of the Pancasila student profile in both English textbooks are integrated with different percentage integration levels in each book. This study recommends that book compilers can increase the frequency of the presence of Pancasila student profile values in books, both in terms of content, exercises and visuals.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text, the most dominant difficulty faced by the students, and the students’ strategies to overcome these difficulties. This study was conducted at the Seventh Grade of SMP Sint Carolus Bengkulu. This is a descriptive quantitative study. The instruments used in this research were questionnaire and interview. Based on the results, it was found that students experienced difficulties in the three aspects of the study, namely linguistic, psychological, and cognitive difficulties. In each of these aspects, organization is the highest one followed by behaviour, feedback, grammatical items, and vocabulary. In organizations, difficulties in developing ideas are the most difficult. Anxiety is the highest difficulty in behaviour, while the lack of practice is the most difficulty in the feedback. The difficulty in using connectors is the highest point in the grammatical items, and the lack of vocabulary is the most difficulty in the vocabulary. Based on the questionnaire and interview results, organization was the most difficult aspect in writing descriptive text. To overcome the difficulties, the students choose to master vocabulary and learning from other sources such as books or the internet while the others like to read from dictionary. Finally, it is also suggested for other researchers to carry out similar research in a broader scope, as well as a description, especially about the mechanic that get negative results.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has occurred across the world. This causes all segments of human life to be disturbed including the education sector. The teaching and learning process tends to run ineffectively and should be done online. Online learning offers a learning process that can be done not only in the classroom but anywhere and anytime. One of the applications that can be used is Google classroom. This study aims to determine students' perceptions and problems in learning English using Google Classroom during the Covid-19 Pandemic at SMAN 6 Kota Bengkulu. This research was a mixed-method research involving 443 students in the academic year of 2020/2021. The data were collected using a questionnaire in the form of a Google form consisting of 50 questions with 4 answer choices, namely strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree, and semi-structured interviews. The data obtained were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of this research indicate that the students have a positive perception in learning English using Google classrooms during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMAN 6 Kota Bengkulu with the average score obtained was 1160 and was in the positive category. Moreover, the data obtained from the interview showed that most of the students experienced problems in learning English skills using Google classroom caused by lack of vocabulary. In addition, the problems in using the Google classroom application were in the opening and uploading files or videos. These findings are expected that the teachers should change their teaching habits by offering students innovative opportunities to improve their self-confidence, to control their learning, and to practice their language skills. The students should be more creative to solve the problems during learning English by using Google classroom even in the online process or not.

Abstract

Grammar learning strategies (GLS) play a crucial role in successful language acquisition; however, this area remains understudied in the Asian English as a foreign language context. To address this gap, this mixed-methods study explored the English GLS employed by Asian (Indonesian) undergraduate participants (N = 194), examining differences in frequency of use (most and least used), as well as gender, semester, and the rationale for implementation. Participants completed the Grammar Learning Strategies Inventory (GLSI), a 70-item, closed-ended, five-point Likert scale questionnaire, followed by semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that participants were high users of social strategies, followed by metacognitive, cognitive, and affective strategies. The exploration also identified various rationales for the high use of strategies, including understanding and avoiding grammar mistakes, correcting errors, improving grammar usage, sharing knowledge, and enhancing comprehension. In contrast, rationales for the low use of affective strategies included stress hindering focus, lack of motivation, insufficient practice, low confidence, fear of making mistakes, neglect of self-rewards, limited feedback, failure to maintain a learning diary, and infrequent self-reflection. The article concludes by discussing the studys limitations and offering suggestions for further research. These findings enhance the understanding of the social strategies used by English language learners and, consequently, inform pedagogical practices while contributing to the scholarly literature.
